Book NASTT s Pipe Ramming Good Practices Guidelines

Download or read book NASTT s Pipe Ramming Good Practices Guidelines written by North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT) and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Pipe Ramming publication is presented by the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT), a non-profit educational organization. The published work serves as a companion document to a portion of "NASTT's New Installations Good Practices Training Course" and is intended to provide contractors, engineers, and utility owners with an overview of the many benefits of this widely practiced trenchless method. Pipe ramming is defined as a trenchless technique used to install open ended steel casings by the hammering action of a percussion hammer. It is an extension of older techniques that use displacement tools to install small-diameter pipes and the application is similar to vertical pile driving. The pipe ramming method provides continuous support of the overburden soil with a steel casing as well as support at the excavation face from the soil that is typically left within the pipe during the ramming process. The method has seen extensive use to install casings for culverts and utilities beneath raised features such as railroad track and roadway embankments. This non-steerable trenchless technology is generally considered to have a low risk of over-excavation related settlement in most ground conditions. All NASTT publications are peer reviewed by volunteer industry professionals to ensure that they offer generic and non-commercial information. This publication was funded solely by NASTT as part of our educational outreach programing. Since 1990, the all-volunteer members of NASTT have presented non-commercial information about green alternative engineering methods to North American communities and beyond. NASTT offers multiple, high quality trenchless courses each year throughout North America and at our annual NASTT No-Dig Show Conference and Exhibition. Book Trenchless Installation of Conduits Beneath Roadways

Download or read book Trenchless Installation of Conduits Beneath Roadways written by Tom Iseley and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1997 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to geologists; geotechnical, construction, and maintenance engineers; other state department of transportation (DOT) personnel involved with the planning, design, and permit issuance for conduits beneath roadways; local transportation agencies; utility contractors and consultants; and trenchless construction equipment manufacturers. It describes the current state of the practice for the use of trenchless technology for installing conduits beneath roadways. Trenchless construction is a process of installing, rehabilitating, or replacing underground utility systems without open-cut excavation. The synthesis is focused on trenchless technology for new installations. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the trenchless installation technologies (methods, materials, and equipment) currently employed by state DOTs and other agencies to install conduits beneath roadways. The synthesis presents data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of transportation agencies. For each technology identified, information is provided to describe the range of applications, basis for technique selection, site specific design factors to be considered, relative costs, common environmental issues, and example specifications. In addition, information on emerging technologies and research needs is presented.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These guidelines mark the completion of the Construction Productivity Advancement Research (CPAR) project 'Trenchless Construction: Evaluation of Methods and Materials to Install and Rehabilitate Underground Utilities.' CPAR is a cost-shared U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and construction industry research program. This 3-year project was conducted by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station and the Trenchless Technology Center at Louisiana Tech University. The overall objective of this study was to develop guidelines that owners, engineers, and contractors could use to evaluate and select appropriate trenchless methods and equipment for their project requirements and site conditions. The guidelines focus on the three major elements of trenchless technology investigated in this study: rehabilitation of existing pipelines using cured-in-place (CIPP) and fold-and-formed pipe (FFP) methods, installation of small-diameter (2- to 10-in.) pipe lines using mini-horizontal directional drilling (mini-HDD) and installation of larger diameter pipelines using microtunneling. The guidelines are based primarily on the results of extensive laboratory and field investigations. (MM).

Book Standard Construction Guidelines for Microtunneling

Download or read book Standard Construction Guidelines for Microtunneling written by and published by Amer Society of Civil Engineers. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Standard Guideline covers the planning, design, pipe materials, and construction of microtunneling. Microtunneling is defined as a trenchless construction method for installing pipelines. The North American definition of microtunneling describes a method and does not impose size limitations on that method. The tunnel may be considered a microtunnel if all of the following features apply to construction: the microtunneling boring machine is remote controlled, a laser guidance system is employed, a jacking system is used for thrust, and continuous pressure is provided to the face of the excavation to balance groundwater and earth pressures. This Standard Guideline is a vital reference for owners, engineers, contractors, and construction managers.

Book An Introduction to Trenchless Technology

Download or read book An Introduction to Trenchless Technology written by Steven R. Kramer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, the field of trenchless technology has expanded rapidly in products, equipment, and utilization. This expansion would not have occurred without a strong increase ineconomic incentives to the user. Because theoperating environment has changed, trenchless technology is often the preferred alternative to traditional methods of digging holes and installing conduits. The infrastructure in which we live has become more congested and has to beshared by several users. In addition, the cost of restoring a road or landscaped area after construction may be higher than the cost of installing the conduit. These factors add to the need for trenchless technology-the ability to dig holes without disturbing the surface. In some ways, trenchless technology is a futuristic concept. Ruth Krauss in a children'sbookofdefinitions wrote,"AHole...Is to Dig." But thisstatement is not necessarily true. Today, a hole could be to bore. Trenchless technology is not new. But it certainly has become the buzzword of the construction industry and it appears that it will have a growing impact in the way contractors, utilities, and others install new facilities. Methods to bore horizontal holes were practiced as early as the 18005, but this technology has greatly changed. Today's tools include sophisticated drilling methods, state-of the-art power systems, and electronic guidance techniques. These tools can bore faster, safer, and more accurately, and in many instances more economically, than open-cllt methods. Technology has played an important role in these advances, but economics has become the driving force in making these systems popular.
