Book Edible Wattle Seeds of Southern Australia

Download or read book Edible Wattle Seeds of Southern Australia written by BR Maslin and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies 47 Acacia species which have potential for cultivation in the southern semi-arid region of Australia as a source of seed for human consumption. Eighteen species are regarded as having the greatest potential. Botanical profiles are provided for these species, together with information on the natural distribution, ecology, phenology, growth characteristics and seed attributes. Two species, Acacia victoriae and Acacia murrayana, appear particularly promising as the seeds of both these have good nutritional characteristics and were commonly used as food by Aborigines. Acacia victoriae is currently the most important wattle used in the Australian bushfood industry. This book is a useful reference for the bush food industry.

Book Noongar Bush Tucker

Download or read book Noongar Bush Tucker written by Vivienne Hansen and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the colonisation of Australia, Aboriginal Australians lived on a wonderful larder of fresh fruit, vegetables and lean meat, in a land largely free from disease, with more exercise, less stress and supportive communities. Today, in Aboriginal communities all over Australia, there are higher instances of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, renal disease, some types of cancer and lung diseases than in the general population. This book is an attempt to preserve bush tucker knowledge for future generations of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people to ensure the information is not lost with the passing of Elders. The authors describe over 260 species of the edible plants and fungi that were regularly gathered by the Noongars of the Bibbulmun Nation of the south-west of Western Australia before and after colonisation. Many of these plants and fungi are difficult to find today because of land clearing for crops and the farming of sheep and cattle.

Book Planting for Wildlife

Download or read book Planting for Wildlife written by Nicola Munro and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across Australia, woodlands are increasingly being planted on formerly cleared or semi-cleared land. Such revegetation efforts can improve biodiversity of farm wildlife, enhance aesthetics of the landscape and even boost farm production. Planting for Wildlife provides the latest information on restoring woodlands, with particular emphasis on plantings as habitat for wildlife. Key topics include why it is important to revegetate, where to plant, how to prepare a site, how to maintain and manage plantings, and how they change over time. The authors focus on the south-eastern grazing region where domestic livestock grazing and/or cropping have been prominent forms of land use. These agricultural landscapes have suffered widespread land degradation and significant losses of biodiversity. Revegetation is a vital step towards solving these problems. The book includes high-quality colour photographs to support the themes discussed. It is ideal for natural resource managers; field staff from state and federal government agencies; landholders; hobby farmers; vineyard owners; naturalists interested in birds, conservation and revegetation; as well as policy makers in regional, state and federal government.
