Acometo ahora esta tarea con todo interés. Había decidido dejar de escribir un poco, como reza un cartel que tengo sobre mi mesa, junto a mi ordenador. En el mismo papel está escrito: callar y escuchar. Aunque callar, dejar de hablar, no es dejar de escribir. Algunos amigos me decían que escribía más que el Tostado. El Tostado es una figura de la Catedral de Ávila, detrás del altar mayor, que representa a D. Alonso Fernández de Madrigal. Su actitud de estar escribiendo no ha cambiado en los más de 5 siglos desde que Vasco de Zarza la esculpiera en alabastro, y el ingenioso pueblo español ha consagrado el dicho de "escribir más que el Tostado", que así llamaban al bueno de D. Alonso. Y pensando en que pueda ser útil para los profesores más jóvenes, y también para los alumnos, me atrevo ahora a hacer público este opúsculo con el cacofónico título de Trece Trucos para intentar hacer mejor la arquitectura, más precisa y más hermosa. Estos trucos o mecanismos, son los que he utilizado muchas veces en mis obras y he intentado transmitir a mis alumnos a lo largo de mis más de 40 años de docencia de Proyectos en la ETSAM, y en muchas otras Escuelas de Arquitectura del mundo. Desde el primer capítulo he querido distinguir con claridad entre ideas y mecanismos. Lo importante en una obra es tener una idea de lo que se quiere construir. Por eso puse el título de La Idea Construida a mi primer libro de hace ya más de 20 años. Los trucos de los que hablo aquí, son mecanismos para hacer visibles esas ideas. Hay arquitectos buenos, con buenas ideas, pero que después son incapaces de construirlas. Y hay otros arquitectos, hábiles, que sin tener ideas especialmente buenas, llenan sus obras de mecanismos ingeniosos capaces de asombrar a muchos pero no de convencernos a algunos pocos. Querría para los arquitectos más jóvenes, y para mis alumnos, que supieran encontrar su sitio como arquitectos construyendo ideas que permanezcan en el tiempo. En los diferentes capítulos se van desplegando temas que, a veces, de tan lógicos parecen obvios. Como ya escribí: Más de una vez, algún amigo mío, me ha dicho que en mis escritos aparecen a veces los mismos temas o parte de ellos, repetidos. Aunque tiene algo de razón, sería esquizofrénico el no repetir nunca nada, sobre todo si uno escribe mucho.
