Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of adding a treatment integrity component to the Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSP) of several elementary and middle school students. Single-case design was used to measure student levels of behavior change and concurrent multiple baseline across subjects design was used to measure interventionists' adherence to the PBSP. During baseline, progress monitoring was conducted using the Treatment Integrity Checklist while the treatment condition consisted of an additional performance feedback component. The participants also completed a survey to measure social validity. Results showed significantly higher rates of student engagement in replacement behaviors and moderately lower rates of engagement in target behaviors across all participants during the treatment phase. The intervention also resulted in significantly higher adherence to PBSPs across all participants. A functional relationship between high levels of treatment integrity and positive changes in student behavior levels was also demonstrated. Results of the social validity survey indicated that the intervention was useful, valuable, and successful in measuring and increasing treatment integrity.

Book excerpt: There is a need to better understand treatment integrity in the context of behavioral interventions in adolescence delivered by natural treatment agents (parents and teachers). The present study examined factors related to treatment integrity of behavior support plans delivered by parents and teachers during the conjoint behavioral consultation intervention in middle school. Parents and teachers of eight students with or at risk for serious emotional disturbance who engaged in the CBC intervention were included from public middle schools in the Midwest. Prior to implementation of the behavior support plan, parents and teachers completed measures relating to stress, self-efficacy, outcome expectations, acceptability of the intervention, and student behavior, after which treatment integrity during the implementation period was monitored. Following participation in CBC, additional questions were asked of participants to examine factors related to adoption, implementation, and maintenance of the intervention. Negative correlations were identified between parenting stress and measures of implementation (adherence to the behavior support plan and days of implementation) and between teacher perceptions of student behavior severity and adherence to the behavior support plan. Narrative responses were transcribed and coded according to a qualitative phenomenological thematic approach. Parents and teachers identified barriers and facilitators to adoption, implementation, and maintenance consistent with those identified in previous research (Sanetti & Kratochwill, 2009). The proposed study has implications for treatment integrity of both parents and teachers participating in CBC as well as for family-school partnerships in middle school more broadly.
