Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Electricity, Vol. 2 of 3: In Theory and Practice It is three years since the First Volume of the Treatise on Electricity in Theory and Practice appeared. This long interval, which has elapsed between the publication of these two volumes, is due to the desire, that I have entertained, of not allowing the Second to appear, until after my having succeeded in giving a satisfactory theory of the voltaic pile. I hope to have solved this difficult and contested question, in a manner that will be accepted by all who have turned their attention to it. I have also to justify myself on another point; it is the necessity in which I am placed of publishing a Supplementary Volume. The very great development, that I have felt it necessary to give to the subjects discussed in this volume, on account of their importance, and of the very great numbers of works of which they have been the object, have rendered it impossible for me to include in it the Applications of Electricity. I have therefore determined to devote to them a supplementary volume, which will enable me to give to them the extension, which they merit. This change in my original plan has led me to introduce a second change, namely, the addition of a new Part to the Six of which the Treatise should have consisted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Electricity, in Theory and Practice, Vol. 3 of 3 I must add that my task, as far as concerns this Third Volume, has been singularly facilitated for me by the co-operation that has been afforded me by my son, M. Lucien de la Rive, former pupil of the Polytechnic School of Paris, by his undertaking the reduction of the mathematical notes with which the Volume is terminated, and of the Second and Fourth Sections of the Chapter on Physical Applications, relative to the application of the magnetic properties of the current, both to the production of a mechanical motor, as well as to the various apparatus, other than electric telegraphs. Book An Elementary Treatise on Electricity

Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Electricity written by James Clerk Maxwell and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albert Einstein characterized the work of James Clerk Maxwell as the "most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton." Max Planck went even further, declaring that "he achieved greatness unequalled," and Richard Feynman asserted that "From a long view of the history of mankind — seen from, say, ten thousand years from now — there can be little doubt that the most significant event of the nineteenth century will be judged as Maxwell's discovery of the laws of electrodynamics." Maxwell made numerous other contributions to the advancement of science, but the greatest work of his life was devoted to electricity. An Elementary Treatise on Electricity appeared at a time when very few books on electrical measurements were available to students, and its compact treatment not only elucidates the theory of electricity but also serves to develop electrical ideas in readers' minds. The author describes experiments that demonstrate the principal facts relating an electric charge as a quantity capable of being measured, deductions from these facts, and the exhibition of electrical phenomena. This volume, published posthumously from Maxwell's lecture notes at the Cavendish Laboratory — which he founded at the University of Cambridge — is supplemented by a selection of articles from his landmark book, Electricity and Magnetism. A classic of science, this volume is an eminently suitable text for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students.

Book Treatise on Geophysics Volume 2

Download or read book Treatise on Geophysics Volume 2 written by G David Price and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-04-20 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatise on Geophysics: Mineral Physics, Volume 2, provides a comprehensive review of the current state of understanding of mineral physics. Each chapter demonstrates the significant progress that has been made in the understanding of the physics and chemistry of minerals, and also highlights a number of issues which are still outstanding or that need further work to resolve current contradictions. The book first reviews the current status of our understanding of the nature of the deep Earth. These include the seismic properties of rocks and minerals; problems of the lower mantle and the core-mantle boundary; and the state of knowledge on mantle chemistry and the nature and evolution of the core. The discussions then turn to the theory underlying high-pressure, high-temperature physics, and the major experimental methods being developed to probe this parameter space. The remaining chapters explain the specific techniques for measuring elastic and acoustic properties, electronic and magnetic properties, and rheological properties; the nature and origin of anisotropy in the Earth; the properties of melt; and the magnetic and electrical properties of mantle phases. Self-contained volume starts with an overview of the subject then explores each topic with in depth detail Extensive reference lists and cross references with other volumes to facilitate further research Full-color figures and tables support the text and aid in understanding Content suited for both the expert and non-expert

All aspects of mathematics are covered: pure and applied, probability and statistics, foundations and philosophy. Sometimes two writings from the same period and the same subject are taken together. The biography of the author(s) is recorded, and the circumstances of the preparation of the writing are given. When the writing is of some lengths an analytical table of its contents is supplied. The contents of the writing is reviewed, and its impact described, at least for the immediate decades. Each article ends with a bibliography of primary and secondary items. First book of its kind Covers the period 1640-1940 of massive development in mathematics Describes many of the main writings of mathematics Articles written by specialists in their field
