Book Impacts of Climate Change and Variability on Transportation Systems and Infrastructure

Download or read book Impacts of Climate Change and Variability on Transportation Systems and Infrastructure written by U. S. Department Transportation and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-07 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Transportation conducted a comprehensive, multi-phase study of the Central Gulf Coast region to better understand climate change impacts on transportation infrastructure and identify potential adaptation strategies. This region is home to a complex multimodal network of transportation infrastructure, and it plays a critical economic role in the import and export of oil and gas, agricultural products, and other goods. Phase 1 of this Gulf Coast Study examined the impacts of climate change on transportation infrastructure at a regional scale. Phase 2 focused on a smaller region, enhancing regional decision makers' ability to understand potential impacts on specific components of infrastructure and to evaluate adaptation options. An important goal of Phase 2 was to develop methodologies that could be used by other transportation agencies to evaluate vulnerability and adaptation measures. With that goal in mind, the project team developed transferrable methodologies and pilot tested them on the transportation system in Mobile, Alabama. This study evaluated the impacts on six transportation modes (highways, ports, airports, rails, transit, and pipelines) from projected changes in temperature and precipitation, sea level rise, and the storm surges and winds associated with more intense storms. The project resulted in findings in Mobile's transportation vulnerability, as well as approaches for using climate data in transportation vulnerability assessments, methods for evaluating vulnerability and adaptation options, and tools and resources that will assist other agencies in conducting similar work.

Book Drought Preparedness and Response

Download or read book Drought Preparedness and Response written by and published by American Water Works Association. This book was released on 2011 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a reliable supply of water requires being prepared for water shortages of varying degree and duration. What can a municipal water supplier do to mitigate water shortages caused by drought? Preparing for drought and water shortages before they occur is the best defense. This manual will help water managers facing water shortages by illustrating how to employ tried-and-true strategies and tactics of drought mitigation, as well as new tools and methods. Managing water shortages involves temporarily reducing demand and finding alternate water to temporarily increase supply. There are options available to water managers to accomplish this. The manual provides a proven, seven-step process to anticipate and respond to water shortages through a structured planning process.

A total of 32 papers were selected out of the 87 presentations made at the Congress. They have been grouped in three different categories covering multiple uses of water, natural wastewater treatment, and knowledge transfer in the water sector. The editors wish to acknowledge the time-consuming work of the Scientific Committee refereeing submissions both before and after the event, which resulted in the selection of papers in this volume. The editors are most grateful to the authors of the papers in the volume which contributed to the success of Aqua 2003. The biennial Aqua congresses are becoming one of the most important technical and scientific events related to water management in Latin America. Book excerpt: The untold story of how the 9/11 Commission overcame partisanship and bureaucracy to produce its acclaimed report. From the beginning, the 9/11 Commission found itself facing obstacles — the Bush administration blocked its existence for months, the first co-chairs resigned right away, the budget was limited, and a polarized Washington was suspicious of its every request. Yet despite these long odds, the Commission produced a bestselling report unanimously hailed for its objectivity, along with a set of recommendations that led to the most significant reform of America’s national security agencies in decades. This is a riveting insider’s account of Washington at its worst — and its best.
