Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travels in Arabia Deserta, originally published in 1888, is a two-volume set which describes English poet Charles Doughty's extensive travels through the Arabian deserts and the discoveries he made there. The work became well-regarded for its beautiful prose as well as its extensiveness, which made it a benchmark of ambitious travel writing in the early 20th century. Written in the style of the King James Bible, the text is extravagant and creative. In the 1920's, it was discovered by British Army Officer T.E. Lawrence, who spurred the book's republication, this time with an introduction from Lawrence. The book has been in and out of print since then, but the Cosimo edition is a rare 1921 reprint, and includes the Lawrence introduction. Volume I includes T.E. Lawrence's Introduction, as well as accounts of Doughty's treks to Mecca, Ammon and Moab, the Mountain of Edom, Arabia, the Passage of the Harra, Teyma, and more. He also describes nomad life in the desert and ancient stories, peoples, and myths connected with his travels. CHARLES MONTAGU DOUGHTY (1843-1926) was an English poet and writer born in Theberton Hall, Saxmundham, Suffolk. He attended King's College London and graduated from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1864. Among this author's works are an epic poem in six volumes titled The Dawn in Britain, published in 1906, and his well-known Travels in Arabia Deserta, for which he received much praise.

The first persons met with approached to ask me, "What have you found there - anything? tell us! certainly you went to see something yonder, and else wherefore had the Nasrany climbed upon those high rocks, and paid pence for an ass?" As I passed by the suk tradesmen beckoned to me from the shops, they too would speak with me of the adventure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings in Arabia, Vol. 2 of 2: Being an Abridgment of "Travels in Arabia Deserta" Some of the villagers Came up to me immediately to enquire for medicines they were full of tedious words and all was to beg of me and buy none. I left them sitting and went out to see the place, for this was Kheybar. Our host sent his son to guide me; the boy led down by a lane and called me to enter a doorway and see a spring. I went in - it was a mesjid! And I withdrew hastily. The father (who had instructed the child beforehand), hearing from him when we came again that I had left the place without praying, went down and shut his street door. He returned and took his pistol from the wall, Saying, Let us go out together and he would show me round the town.' When we were in the street, he led me by an orchard path, out of the place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of Arabia, Vol. 2 of 2: A Record of Travel and ExplorationMy first step was to tackle Ibn Sa'ud himself; at the conclusion of an evening interview I asked him bluntly whether he remembered the compact, to which he had agreed, and reminded him that the summer would soon be upon us. I remember, he replied, I have not for gotten, but I have been thinking that at this season you will experience much discomfort. Would it not be better that you should defer the project till after the summer when I will send you whithersoever you may desire 2 Besides with this affair of the blockade trouble at Kuwait I am anxious to have you with me to consult; but, of course, if you wish to go there is nothing to prevent it, and the camels are all ready to come in. Well, I said, it was arranged that I should go, and I thought no more of the matter believing that you had matters in train and would inlorm me when the preparations were complete. As regards the Kuwait affair you know it is fully settled and no further trouble will occur. I have given you my word for that but, 0 Hakim, it seems to me that perhaps you really do not wish me to undertake this journey. If that be so, tell me and I shall understand, though I am anxious to go in accordance with our agreement. Thus appealed to on a point of honour Ibn Sa'ud yielded with a fair grace and with an unconvincing assurance that it was only a con sideration of my own comfort that had deterred him from further proceeding in the matter. The camels would be sent for at once.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Arabia, Vol. 2 of 2: Comprehending an Account of Those Territories in Hedjaz Which the Mohammedans Regard as Sacred The time has passed, and probably for ever, when hadj ys or pilgrims, from all re gions of the Muselman world, came every year in multitudes, that they might visit devotionally the sacred places of the Hedjaz. An increasing indifference to their religion, and an increase of expense attending the journey, now deter the greater part of the Mohammedans from complying with that law of the Koran, which enjoins to every Moslim who can afford it, the performance of a pil grimage to Mekka, once at least in his life.
