Excerpt: ... and never having suffered, as it is said, either Osmanlies or Arnaouts to displace them from their service. There is an old castle near the sea, in which are six pieces of cannon, which form all the ordnance of the town; and in this castle the military reside. There is also a ruined tower, called Boorjee-el-Bahr, built on a rock in the sea, and near the common landing place, as well as some few round towers, of little strength in the walls of the town themselves. The Marino, as it is called, has a good wharf for discharging goods, as boats can approach it sufficiently near for that purpose; and all along its front are ranged fine shafts of grey granite pillars erect, which are used for mooring the small vessels securely while they lie there. These are some of the remains of the ancient magnificence of Bairoot, once decorating the porticos of temples and palaces, and now presenting a striking picture of the changes to which all things are subject, as seen wound round by the cables and hawsers of a few place them small trading boats. The bazars, the streets, the dwelling-houses, and magazines of the town are better built than any of those which I had yet seen along the coast; the streets are sufficiently wide for all the purposes of passage and comfort where carriages are not used, and are all paved with large stones; the bazars are well furnished with the manufactures of the country and of Europe, as well as with all kinds of provisions; the dwelling-houses are lofty, spacious, and well-built, and some of the magazines near the sea-shore are equal to those found in similar sea-ports of England itself. Sl There are within the town three mosques, with their courts, fountains, and minarehs, the latter of a mean form. The Christian churches...

Book Near Eastern Tribal Societies During the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Near Eastern Tribal Societies During the Nineteenth Century written by Eveline van der Steen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an in-depth study of tribal life in the Near East in the 19th century, exploring how tribes shaped society, economy and politics in the desert, as well as in villages and towns. Until the First World War Near Eastern society was tribally organized. Particularly in the Levant and the Arabian peninsula, where the Ottoman empire was weak, large and powerful tribes such as Anaze, Beni Sakhr and Shammar interacted and competed for control of the land, the people and the economy. The main sources for this study are travel accounts of 19th century adventurers and explorers. Their travels, on horseback, on camel or on foot opened a fascinating window on a world with an ideology that was fundamentally different from their own, often Victorian background. One chapter is dedicated to oral traditions in the region, from heroic epics to short poems, which lets the tribes and tribe members themselves speak, giving a voice to the tribal frame of mind. Evidence of tribal organization as a driving force in society can be found in documents and sometimes in the archaeological record from the Bronze Age onwards. While a straight comparison between ancient and subrecent tribal communities is fraught with difficulties and must be treated with caution, a better understanding of 19th century tribal ethics and customs provides useful insights into the history and the power relations of a more distant past. At the same time it may help us understand some of the underlying causes for the present conflicts afflicting the region.

Book excerpt: The result of twenty-five years of research with different tribal groups in the Arabian peninsula, this study focuses on ethnographic descriptions of Arab tribal societies in five regions of the peninsula, with comparative material from others. Having become aware of the depth in time of Arab tribal structures, the authors have developed a view of Arabic tribal discourse where 'tribe' is seen as essentially an identity that confers access to a social structure and its processes.
