Download or read book MEMOIRES OF A TRAVELHOLIC written by Carole J. Kuhn, Ph.D. and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Kuhn has written a book about her life and travels as a foreign language teacher. In essence, it is a book of memories, autobiographical in nature. She describes many of the 45 trips in detail, but she also groups many of the trips togeher. In 1973 when she began taking students to Europe, she had a good background of working with students and knowing how they think and act. (or so she thought) There is an interesting list of things to take, where to put the items, where they can be bought and the prices of the items. There is also a list of personal rules and regulations that were required of all students. They were called Mademoiselle's Rules or Mlle's Rules. Then there is a comprehensive list of Trip Procedures, giving all the do's and don't's of traveling. Students were allowed to "sample" beer and alcohol as long as their parents had signed a permission slip, but students will always try to outthink the teacher and circumvent the procedures. Dr. Kuhn describes many of the things that went wrong on both student trips and adult trips, along with things that didn't seem funny at the time, but in retrospect seem humorous today.

Download or read book Migrant Care Workers written by Karen Christensen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this beautifully-argued book, Karen Cristensen and Ingrid Guldvik provide a comparatively-based insight to the historical context for public care work and show how migration policies, general welfare and long-term care policies (including the cash-for-care schemes) as well as cultural differences in values in the UK and Norway set the context for how migrant care workers can realise their individual life projects. Through viewing migrants as individuals who actively construct their lives within the options and conditions they are given at any time, they bring to the discussion an awareness of what might be called ’a new type of migrant’ one who is neither a victim of the divide between the global north and the global south, nor someone leaving family behind, but individuals using care work as a part of their own life project of potential self-improvement.

Download or read book Corporations Businesses and Families written by Roma S. Hanks and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporations, Businesses, and Families offers a comprehensive look at the relationship between family systems and work organizations. Discussions ranging from work-family issues of the past such as the decline of the role of the family in the workplace during the rise of labor unions, to current trends toward increased corporate provision of child care, introduce a historical overview of the changes in work-family relationships from various perspectives. Special topics of interest include methodological strategies for researchers investigating work-family issues within the corporation, perspectives of minority families in corporate work settings, and family responsiveness in military organizations. In addition to examining the relationship between the corporation and the families of its employees, the authors explore the systems of management and succession in family-run corporations and businesses, and the family business aspects of teleministries. Researchers, students, human resource managers, and business policymakers will benefit from the information in this authoritative new book. The trends and issues identified in this illuminating volume will be useful in planning corporate initiatives that affect families, and in training students in business and social science programs where work-family issues are of interest.
Download or read book Ghana Must Go written by Taiye Selasi and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning novel, spanning generations and continents, Ghana Must Go by rising star Taiye Selasi is a tale of family drama and forgiveness, for fans of Zadie Smith and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This is the story of a family -- of the simple, devastating ways in which families tear themselves apart, and of the incredible lengths to which a family will go to put itself back together. It is the story of one family, the Sais, whose good life crumbles in an evening; a Ghanaian father, Kweku Sai, who becomes a highly respected surgeon in the US only to be disillusioned by a grotesque injustice; his Nigerian wife, Fola, the beautiful homemaker abandoned in his wake; their eldest son, Olu, determined to reconstruct the life his father should have had; their twins, seductive Taiwo and acclaimed artist Kehinde, both brilliant but scarred and flailing; their youngest, Sadie, jealously in love with her celebrity best friend. All of them sent reeling on their disparate paths into the world. Until, one day, tragedy spins the Sais in a new direction. This is the story of a family: torn apart by lies, reunited by grief. A family absolved, ultimately, by that bitter but most tenuous bond: familial love. Ghana Must Go interweaves the stories of the Sais in a rich and moving drama of separation and reunion, spanning generations and cultures from West Africa to New England, London, New York and back again. It is a debut novel of blazing originality and startling power by a writer of extraordinary gifts. 'Ghana Must Go is both a fast moving story of one family's fortunes and an ecstatic exploration of the inner lives of its members. With her perfectly-pitched prose and flawless technique, Selasi does more than merely renew our sense of the African novel: she renews our sense of the novel, period. An astonishing debut' Teju Cole, author of Open City Taiye Selasi was born in London and raised in Massachusetts. She holds a B.A. in American Studies from Yale and an M.Phil. in International Relations from Oxford. "The Sex Lives of African Girls" (Granta, 2011), Selasi's fiction debut, appears in Best American Short Stories 2012. She lives in Rome.
