Book Travel Tales and Cryptic Crosswords

Download or read book Travel Tales and Cryptic Crosswords written by Peter Waugh and published by Austin Macauley. This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enjoy a travel tale and a cryptic crossword on each of the 53 weekends possible in a year. Unconventional, quirky and generally light-hearted, the tales range from circumnavigating the globe by cargo/passenger and migrant ships and driving an ageing car from Paris to Tehran over bad roads in winter and mostly at night, to hitchhiking in kilts around Europe. Selling patent medicine in rural Malaya in the early 1960s, surviving an earthquake and its aftermath in Tehran, and hearing of JFK's assassination from a Chinese gangster in Kuala Lumpur all feature. There are rants about unsatisfactory toilet blocks in caravan parks and travellers who cap one's stories; raves about Star Bars and Star Stays; essays on Currywurst and the town of Condom; and there are more than 150 photos, a few poems and one recipe. The cryptic crosswords are modelled on those in The Times, but perhaps slightly easier.

For example, here's a clue: 'Reportedly lost in fog. (4 letters).' Got it? It's 'mist' - a homonym for 'missed' and also a synonym for 'fog'. An introduction enlightens you on all the intricacies of solving cryptic crosswords, and of course the solutions appear at the end with tricks behind the clues explained. It may take a little practice to get the hang of these, but once you do, you'll be hooked for good!

Book National Puzzlers League Cryptic Crosswords

Download or read book National Puzzlers League Cryptic Crosswords written by Joshua Kosman and published by Random House Puzzles & Games. This book was released on 2005-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Puzzlers' League (NPL) was founded in 1883 and is the oldest puzzlers' organization in the world. For over 100 years, crosswords and other word puzzles that appear in the NPL's monthly magazine, The Enigma, could be enjoyed only by NPL members. Now, for the first time, a selection of the league's favorite cryptic crosswords is available in book form for puzzle fans everywhere to enjoy. Unlike regular crossword puzzles, each clue in a cryptic crossword has two parts--one that's straightforward and one that involves one or more types of wordplay--and part of the fun is determining which part is which and what type of wordplay is involved. For example, Shoestring allowances lead to tears (11) is a cryptic clue for LACERATIONS. The straightforward part of the clue is tears, which is a definition for LACERATIONS. The wordplay part of the clue is Shoestring allowances which can be expressed as LACE + RATIONS which lead to LACERATIONS. The number in parentheses tells you the number and length of the answer words--in this case, it's one 11-letter word. Another example, with a different type of wordplay is Rearrange, rearrange ram's front (9) which is a cryptic clue for TRANSFORM. Rearrange is a straightforward definition of TRANSFORM and rearrange ram's front tells you to rearrange, or anagram, the nine letters in ram's front giving you the nine-letter word TRANSFORM. One of most fascinating things about cryptics is that the clues are a combination of tremendous creativity and imagination, on one hand, and strict, formal rules, on the other. This book contains 45 variety cryptics from members of the NPL, many of them by distinguished puzzle authors, as well as a foreword by Will Shortz, the New York Times crossword editor and the NPL's official historian PuzzleMeter: Difficulty--Very Difficult; Style--Contemporary]

Book Pedagogy for Creative Problem Solving

Download or read book Pedagogy for Creative Problem Solving written by Peter Merrotsy and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides students and practising teachers with a solid, research-based framework for understanding creative problem solving and its related pedagogy. Practical and accessible, it equips readers with the knowledge and skills to approach their own solutions to the creative problem of teaching for creative problem solving. First providing a firm grounding in the history of problem solving, the nature of a problem, and the history of creativity and its conceptualisation, the book then critically examines current educational practices, such as creativity and problem solving models and common classroom teaching strategies. This is followed by a detailed analysis of key pedagogical ideas important for creative problem solving: creativity and cognition, creative problem solving environments, and self regulated learning. Finally, the ideas debated and developed are drawn together to form a solid foundation for teaching for creative problem solving, and presented in a model called Middle C. Middle C is an evidence-based model of pedagogy for creative problem solving. It comprises 14 elements, each of which is necessary for quality teaching that will provide students with the knowledge, skills, structures and support to express their creative potential. As well as emphasis on the importance of self regulated learning, a new interpretation of Pólya's heuristic is presented.

Book Seeing Tongues Hearing Scripts

Download or read book Seeing Tongues Hearing Scripts written by Victoria Rimell and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek and Roman novels can be seen as an important transitional moment in the trajectory from performance to reading, from oralism to textuality, that has underpinned the history of discourse in European consciousness since the 5th century BC. In different and intriguing ways, they explore the contrast, tension, conflict, competition or dialogue between modes of discourse, which frame the novel's concern with identity and self-fashioning, as well as advertising innovation more generally. This volume brings together an international group of scholars interested in ancient and modern constructions of orality and writing and how they are reflected and manipulated in the ancient novel. The essays deal not only with questions of genre, oral poetics and traditions, but also with how various ways of pitting or collapsing modes of representation can become loaded articulations of wider world-views, of cultural, literary, epistemological anxieties and aspirations. The contributors focus in particular on issues surrounding theatricality, gender identity, rhetorical performance, epistolarity, monumentality and power in the ancient novel.
