Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel in England in the Seventeenth Century No more Perhaps not for some who are weighed down with the dross of civilization. But while love of Mother Earth is implanted in the souls of men, there will ever be those whom the manifold beauties of earth and sky will tempt, over the hills and far away, in search of that sudden uprushing and all - pervading emotion that comes to him who gazes upon the grandeurs of nature; that sensation, half rapture, half longing, so typical of this pleasant but transient world of imperfect joys and nebulous desires. Book The Discovery of Britain Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Discovery of Britain Routledge Revivals written by Esther Moir and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1964, this book examines the Tour of Britain. It focuses, neither on foreign tourists coming to Britain, nor on British tourists travelling abroad, but on British people exploring their native land in the three centuries from 1540 to 1840. During this period, it became a popular pastime amongst gentlemen of leisure to travel for weeks, even months, in discovery of their own country and this book describes both the pleasure taken by tourists of Britain and the hardships they endured. Tracking these journeys over three centuries, the book presents a changing English landscape, a changing economy, and a change in people’s tastes as the interests and concerns of the tourists evolve over the timeframe covered.

Book Writing Geometry and Space in Seventeenth Century England and America

Download or read book Writing Geometry and Space in Seventeenth Century England and America written by Jess Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early modern map has come to mark the threshold of modernity, cutting through the layered customs of Medieval parochialism with its clean, expansive geometries. Re-thinking the role played by mathematics and cartography in the English seventeenth century, this book argues that the cultural currency of mathematics was as unstable in the period as that of England's controversial enclosures and plantations. Reviewing evidence from a wide range of literary and scientific; courtly and pragmatic texts, Edwards suggests that its unstable currency rendered mathematics necessarily rhetorical: subject to constant re-negotiation. Yet he also finds a powerful flexibility in this weakness. Mathematized texts from masques to maps negotiated a contemporary ambivalence between Calvinist asceticism and humanist engagement. Their authors promoted themselves as artful guides between virtue and profit; the study and the marketplace. This multi-disciplinary work will be of interest to all disciplines affected by the recent 'spatial turn' in early modern cultural studies, and particularly to students and researchers in literature, history and geography.

Book British Autobiography in the Seventeenth Century

Download or read book British Autobiography in the Seventeenth Century written by Paul Delany and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1969. In the seventeenth century neither the literary genre nor the term ‘autobiography’ existed but we see in seventeenth-century literature many kinds of autobiographical writings, to which their authors gave such titles as ‘Journal of the Life of Me, Confessions, etc. This work is a study of nearly two hundred of these, published and unpublished, which together represent a very varied group of writings. The book begins with an examination of the rise of autobiography as a genre during the Renaissance. It discusses seventeenth-century autobiographical writings under two main headings – ‘religious’, where the autobiographies are grouped according to the denomination of their writer, and ‘secular’, where a wide variety of writings is examined, including accounts of travel and of military and political life, as well as more personal accounts. Autobiographies by women are treated separately, and the author shows that they in general have a deeper revelation of sentiments and more subtle self-analyses than is found in comparable works by men. Sources and influences are recorded and also the essential historical details of each work. This book gives a critical analysis of the autobiographies as literary works and suggests relationships between them and the culture and society of their time. Review of the original publication: "...a contribution to cultural history which is of quite exceptional merit. Its subject is of great intrinsic interest and manifest importance and Professor Delany has treated it with exemplary thoroughness, lucidity, and intelligence." Lionel Trilling
