La statistique appliquée n'est pas simplement une collection de techniques, c'est avant tout une façon de réfléchir aux données empiriques, c'est-à-dire, notamment, un moyen d'identifier les effets réels et de les séparer de ce qui est insignifiant. Cette thèse se propose de démontrer que le rôle de la statistique appliquée consiste à révéler le sens des données et à évaluer leurs limites. L'application de la statistique aux données de l'expérience constitue souvent une anticipation et un vecteur du raisonnement sociologique.
