Es soll dabei im Besonderen um den Zusammenhang von Erinnerung und Traum gehen. In Benjamins Werk gibt es zahlreiche Passagen, welche den Zusammenhang von Traum und Wirklichkeit thematisieren. Zunächst einmal werde ich einen kurzen Überblick auf die Entstehungsgeschichte der Berliner Kindheit um 1900 geben. Darauf folgt dann eine Einführung in den Erinnerungsprozess in der Berliner Kindheit. Hier soll verdeutlicht werden, was Erinnerung leisten kann und was nicht. Interessant ist, dass Traum und Erinnerung für Benjamin eine ähnliche Qualität haben, die sie vom wachen Bewusstsein unterscheidet. Traum und Erinnerung werden dem Unbewussten zugerechnet. Die erinnerte Kindheit ist die Schwelle, auf der sich, wie Traum und Erwachen am Morgen, für kurze Zeit Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, Unbewusstes und Bewusstes begegnen. Auf dem Weg in das wache Bewusstsein wird die Kindheit durch das Erinnern entstellt. Im Folgenden werde ich eine kurze Übersicht über den Wandel des Traum Begriffs geben. Hierzu werde ich die Bedeutung des Traumes von der antiken, über das Mittelalter bis hin zur Neuzeit betrachten. Daraufhin werde ich Benjamins Standpunkt und seine Auffassung des Traumes thematisieren. Hier wird deutlich werden, dass Benjamin dem Traum eine besondere Erleuchtungskraft zugeschrieben hat. Im Weiteren soll es um den Zweifel an der Authentizität der Erinnerung gehen. In der Chronik finden sich Formulierungen, die von der Unsicherheit darüber zeugen, ob das Erinnerte tatsächlich in der Vergangenheit so gewesen ist. Der Traum wird hier neben der Wirklichkeit als zweiter Bezugspunkt für das Erinnern angeführt. Im Kapitel über die Träume in der Berliner Kindheit geht es im Besonderen um die Passagen Unglücksfälle und Verbrechen und um Ein Gespenst. Für Benjamin bestünde ein struktureller Zusammenhang zwischen Kindheitserinnerung und Traum. Er schildert an verschiedenen Stellen in der Berliner Kindheit seine Erinnerungen an Träume. Träume stellen für Benjamin einen Sonderfall des Erinnerns dar. Die Passage Unglücksfälle und Verbrechen zeigt auf, wie schnell Grenzen zwischen Traum und Wirklichkeit verschwimmen. In der Passage Ein Gespenst wird im Besonderen der prophetische Charakter des Traumes in den Blick genommen, aber auch die Mitteilung des Traumes. [...]

Book excerpt: Memory Matters juxtaposes in tripartite structure texts by a child of German bystanders (Wolf), an Austrian-Jewish child-survivor (Klüger), a daughter of Jewish émigrés (Honigmann), a daughter of an officer involved in the German resistance (Bruhns), a granddaughter of a baptized Polish Jew (Maron), and a granddaughter of German refuges from East Prussia (Dückers). Placed outside of the distorting victim-perpetrator, Jewish-German, man-woman, and war-postwar binary, it becomes visible that the texts neither complete nor contradict each other, but respond to one another by means of inspiration, reverberation, refraction, incongruity, and ambiguity. Focusing on genealogies of women, the book delineates a different cultural memory than the counting of (male-inflected) generations and a male-dominated Holocaust and postwar literature canon. It examines intergenerational conflicts and the negotiation of memories against the backdrop of a complicated mother-daughter relationship that follows unpredictable patterns and provokes both discord and empathy. Schaumann’s approach questions the assumption that German-gentile and German-Jewish postwar experiences are necessarily diametrically opposed (i.e. respond to a “negative symbiosis”) and uncovers intersections and continuities in addition to conflicts.

As one of the last philosophers of the 19th century, Nietzsche naturally belongs to the so-called ‘historical century’. The contentious exchange with the past and with antiquity – as much as the mechanisms, the dangers, and the lessons of memory and tradition – are continually examined and stand in close relationship with Nietzsche’s vision of life and his project of human development. As Jacob Burckhardt once wrote of the cultural critique to his Basel colleague: "Fundamentally, you are always teaching history" (9/13/1882). Following Burckhardt’s judgment, the contributors focus on the analysis of core questions in the philosophies of history and memory, and their respective convergence in the thought of Nietzsche. The epistemological relevance of these central concepts will be thematized alongside those concerning tradition, and education. The discussion of these rich themes unifies a broad spectrum of questions, ranging from cultural memory to contemporary philosophy of mind.
