Download or read book Mark Twain s Geographical Imagination written by Joseph A. Alvarez and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as the 1850s, when Samuel L. Clemens (before he became Mark Twain), as a teenager, traveled from his hometown of Hannibal, Missouri, to the east (Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and New York City) and south (St, Louis). In the 1860s, he traveled west to Nevada, California, and The Sandwich Islands (Hawai’I). He also traveled east to Europe and the Middle East. In between these early travels and his “around the world” lecture tour in the 1890s, he lived for periods of time in Europe. From these travels and sojourns abroad, Clemens often found that the imagined geography differed significantly from the reality. And, as most people know, he drew on his real and imagined “home” geography of the lower Mississippi River region to produce several works, including his masterpiece, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Although much has been published about his travels, this collection of essays marks a different approach to Twain’s use of geography and geography’s influence on Twain. The eleven essays use Twain’s concepts of space (geography) to help us understand (or to complicate our understanding of) some of Twain’s works, including Life on the Mississippi, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Prince and the Pauper, Roughing It, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, No. 44 The Mysterious Stranger, Tom Sawyer Abroad, and “The Private History of Campaign that Failed.” The contributors include veteran Twain scholars as well as a graduate student and a non-academic humorist. Their critical perspectives range from the biographical and historical to Althusserian Ideological.
Download or read book Bodies and Souls written by John Rechy and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A memorable feast . . . powerful, chilling, moving . . . extraordinary” from the bestselling author of City of Night and The Sexual Outlaw (Los Angeles Times). An exceptional novel from the bestselling author of the modern classic City of Night, Bodies and Souls is a portrait of modern Los Angeles on an epic scale, “the most spiritual and physical of cities.” Gorgeous, seedy, and striving, the Los Angeles of Rechy’s imagination is a magnetic city that draws to it the nation’s brightest and darkest energies—characters that include a female porn superstar; a young Chicano punk-rock fan; a Bel Air matron and her tyrannical husband, a Supreme Court judge; an aging male stripper; a black maid with apocalyptic visions; and a cynical TV anchorwoman. Through this rich tapestry of human struggle, Rechy paints a lush portrait of a paradise lost but also a heroic odyssey in search of redemption. “Masterful . . . one of the most important novels of the year.” —Dallas Times Herald “There’s so much energy, ambition, and humor in Bodies and Souls that the phrase ‘scarred beauty’ might well describe the novel.” —The New York Times Book Review “Brilliant portraits of modern lives . . . superb.” —San Francisco Chronicle “Rechy is very good at evoking the seamier side of the streets, and he is masterful in funny, graphic sex scenes.” —Publishers Weekly

Download or read book A Whole New Life written by Reynolds Price and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2000 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reynolds Price has long been one of America's most acclaimed and accomplished men of letters -- the author of novels, stories, poems, essays, plays, and a memoir. In "A Whole New Life," however, he steps from behind that roster of achievements to present us with a more personal story, a narrative as intimate and compelling as any work of the imagination. In 1984, a large cancer was discovered in his spinal cord ("The tumor was pencil-thick and gray-colored, ten inches long from my neck-hair downward"). Here, for the first time, Price recounts without self-pity what became a long struggle to withstand and recover from this appalling, if all too common, affliction (one American in three will experience some from of cancer). He charts the first puzzling symptoms; the urgent surgery that fails to remove the growth and the radiation that temporarily arrests it (but hurries his loss of control of his lower body); the occasionally comic trials of rehab; the steady rise of severe pain and reliance on drugs; two further radical surgeries; the sustaining force of a certain religious vision; an eventual discovery of help from biofeedback and hypnosis; and the miraculous return of his powers as a writer in a new, active life. Beyond the particulars of pain and mortal illness, larger concerns surface here -- a determination to get on with the human interaction that is so much a part of this writer's much-loved work, the gratitude he feels toward kin and friends and some (though by no means "all)" doctors, the return to his prolific work, and the "now appalling, now astonishing grace of God." "A Whole New Life" offers more than the portrait of one brave person in tribulation; it offers honestinsight, realistic encouragement and inspiration to others who suffer the bafflement of catastrophic illness or who know someone who does or will.

Book excerpt: The Darkest Alleyway is a compilation of beginning, experimental verses by Christine Soltis. The very first one, Mother Nature in Distress, is credited as the jump-starter of her writing career. Many of the verses were written within the flawed confines of youth and are depictions of the rebel in us all. Sorrow, greed, indecision and unexpected humor are frequently encountered. Below are excerpts, which exemplify the diversity within."A desert lies beneath her eyes, A lone cactus withers and dies..."-Excerpt from Mother Nature in Distress"A woman's wrath. A power beyond her word. Take from her what she loves, take what she cares for, take her name and you've committed yourself to the torture to come. You cannot take every time..."-Excerpt From Wrath"A cow mooed around, happily. He talked to his friends, filled with glee. He stopped by a fence to chew some grass. As he looked up, a bird pooped on his ass..."-Excerpt from The CowCopyright © 2010
