Book Transzendentale Theorie der Einheit und systematische Universalontologie

Download or read book Transzendentale Theorie der Einheit und systematische Universalontologie written by Martin Franken and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Common Mind written by Philip Pettit and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-04-18 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes human beings intentional and thinking subjects? How does their intentionality and thought connect with their social nature and their communal experience? How do the answers to these questions shape the assumptions which it is legitimate to make in social explanation and political evaluation? These are the broad-ranging issues which Pettit addresses in this novel study. The Common Mind argues for an original way of marking off thinking subjects, in particular human beings, from other intentional systems, natural and artificial. It holds by the holistic view that human thought requires communal resources while denying that this social connection compromises the autonomy of individuals. And, in developing the significance of this view of social subjects--this holistic individualism--it outlines a novel framework for social and political theory. Within this framework, social theory is allowed to follow any of a number of paths: space is found for intentional interpretation and decision-theoretic reconstruction, for structural explanation and rational choice derivation. But political theory is treated less ecumenically. The framework raises serious questions about contractarian and atomistic modes of thought and it points the way to a republican rethinking of liberal commitments.

  • Author : Edmund Husserl
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2004-08-16

Download or read book Einleitung in die Ethik written by Edmund Husserl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-08-16 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Freedom and the End of Reason

Download or read book Freedom and the End of Reason written by Richard L. Velkley and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Freedom and the End of Reason, Richard L. Velkley offers an influential interpretation of the central issue of Kant’s philosophy and an evaluation of its position within modern philosophy’s larger history. He persuasively argues that the whole of Kantianism—not merely the Second Critique—focuses on a “critique of practical reason” and is a response to a problem that Kant saw as intrinsic to reason itself: the teleological problem of its goodness. Reconstructing the influence of Rousseau on Kant’s thought, Velkley demonstrates that the relationship between speculative philosophy and practical philosophy in Kant is far more intimate than generally has been perceived. By stressing a Rousseau-inspired notion of reason as a provider of practical ends, he is able to offer an unusually complete account of Kant’s idea of moral culture.

Book Individuation and Identity in Early Modern Philosophy

Download or read book Individuation and Identity in Early Modern Philosophy written by Kenneth F. Barber and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1994-07-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy in the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries has traditionally been characterized as being primarily concerned with epistemological issues. This book is not intended to overturn this characterization but rather to balance it through an examination of equally important metaphysical, or ontological, positions held, explicitly or implicitly, by philosophers in this period. Major philosophers whose views are discussed in this book include Descartes, Malebranche, Spinoza, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Leibniz, Wolff, and Kant. In addition, the contributors of minor Cartesians, especially Regis and Desgabets, are analyzed in a separate chapter. Although the views of early modern philosophers on individuation and identity have been discussed before, these discussions have usually been treated as asides in a larger context. This book is the first to concentrate on the problems of individuation and identity in early modern philosophy and to trace their philosophical development through the period in a coherent way.

  • Author : Tom Rockmore
  • Publisher : Hackett Publishing
  • Release : 2003-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780872206472

Download or read book Before and After Hegel written by Tom Rockmore and published by Hackett Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engaging and accessible introduction to Hegel's theory of knowledge, Tom Rockmore brings together the philosopher's life, his thought, and his historical moment--without, however, reducing one to another. Laying out the philosophical tradition of German idealism, Rockmore concisely explicates the theories of Kant, Fichte, and Schelling, essential to an understanding of Hegel's thought. He then explores Hegel's formulation of his own position in relation to this tradition and follows Hegel's ideas through the competing interpretations of his successors. Even today, according to Rockmore, Hegel's system remains an essentially modern conception of knowledge, superior to Kant's critical philosophy and surprisingly relevant to our philosophical situation. Rockmore's remarkably lucid and succinct introduction to Hegel's thought, with its distinctively historical approach, will benefit students of philosophy, intellectual history, politics, culture, and society.
