Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers from the Seventh International Workshop on Logic Program Synthesis and Transformation, LOPSTR '97, that took place in Leuven, Belgium, on July 10–12, 1997, 'back to back' with the Fourteenth International Conference on Logic Programming, ICLP '97. Both ICLP and LOPSTR were organised by the K.U. Leuven Department of Computer Science. LOPSTR '97 was sponsored by Compulog Net and by the Flanders Research Network on Declarative Methods in Computer Science. LOPSTR '97 had 39 participants from 13 countries. There were two invited talks by Wolfgang Bibel (Darmstadt) on 'A multi level approach to program synthesis', and by Henning Christiansen (Roskilde) on 'Implicit program synthesis by a reversible metainterpreter'. Extended versions of both talks appear in this volume. There were 19 technical papers accepted for presentation at LOPSTR '97, out of 33 submissions. Of these, 15 appear in extended versions in this volume. Their topics range over the fields of program synthesis, program transformation, program analysis, tabling, metaprogramming, and inductive logic programming.

It examines the the aim of producing an integrated ticketing system across England, with the introduction of smartcard concessionary travel passes.The report inquires into the extent to which integrated ticketing on public transport has been achieved for all users; the issues regarding smartcards; arrangements for revenue protection (stopping fare-evasion) which will be affected by new forms of ticket; the impact of concessionary travel in England which is costing £1 billion per annum. The Committee has set out a number of recommendations, including: the Committee believes that the Government in terms of promoting integrated bus ticketing has achieved too little of practical value; it recommends that Traffic Commissioners be given powers to arbitrate where bus companies and local transport authorities disagree; that coach travel should be given greater consideration in future statements of public transport policy; it is imperative that the full range of tickets, including multi-modal options be available at all main outlets so that the Government's aim of fare simplification can be better acheived (see The Future of Rail, Cm. 6233, ISBN 9780101623322); that the Government needs to ensure suitable guidelines on differential pricing is included in decisions on rail fares and rail franchises with particular reference to smartcards; that the Government needs to articulate a clearer strategy for the development of integrated ticketing in general and smartcards in particular; that the Government should move towards a unified system of public transport revenue protection; that the Department of Transport should commission an evaluation of the benefits of the national scheme for free local bus travel and that national concessionary travel is properly funded. On the one hand there are the so-called "process algebras" or "abstract programming languages" with Milner's Calculus of Communicating Systems (CCS) and the theoretical version of Hoare's Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) as main representatives. On the other hand there are machine models, i.e. the classical finite state automata (transition systems), for which, however, more discriminating notions of equivalence than equality of languages are used; and secondly, there are differently powerful types of Petri nets, namely safe and general (place/transition) nets respectively, and predicate/transition nets. Within a uniform framework the syntax and the operational semantics of CCS and TCSP are explained. We consider both, Milner's well-known interleaving semantics, which is based on infinite transition systems, as well as the new distributed semantics introduced by Degano et al., which is based on infinite safe nets. The main part of this work contains three syntax-driven constructions of transition systems, safe nets, and predicate/transition nets respectively. Each of them is accompanied by a proof of consistency. Due to intrinsic limits, which are also investigated here, neither for transition systems and finite nets, nor for general nets does a finite consistent representation of all CCS and TCSP programs exist. However sublanguages which allow finite representations are discerned. On the other hand the construction of predicate/transition nets is possible for all CCS programs in which every choice and every recursive body starts sequentially.
