Book Rural Public Transportation Strategies for Responding to the Livable and Sustainable Communities Initiative

Download or read book Rural Public Transportation Strategies for Responding to the Livable and Sustainable Communities Initiative written by Kathleen Rooney and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This digest summarizes key findings of research performed under NCHRP Project 20-65, Task 42, Rural Public Transportation Strategies for Responding to the Livable and Sustainable Communities Initiative, by ICF International. For the study, ICF conducted a nationwide survey of state departments of transportation (DOTs) and their rural livability activities; conducted follow-up interviews about grants from the Partnership for Sustainable Communities (PSC); and created a primer highlighting strategies that state DOTs, transit operators, and their partners can use to help rural organizations applying for discretionary grant programs. The strategies discussed in the primer are: (1) Building awareness of PSC resources and livability in rural communities; (2) Providing programmatic and financial support; (3) Creating statewide or regional partnerships; and (4) Encouraging transit coordination at the regional level.

Book Transportation and Sustainable Campus Communities

Download or read book Transportation and Sustainable Campus Communities written by Will Toor and published by . This book was released on 2004-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colleges and universities across North America are facing difficult questions about automobile use and transportation. Lack of land for new parking lots and the desire to preserve air quality are but a few of the factors leading institutions toward a new vision based upon expanded transit access, better bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and incentives that encourage less driving. Transportation and Sustainable Campus Communities presents a comprehensive examination of techniques available to manage transportation in campus communities. Authors Will Toor and Spenser W. Havlick give readers the understanding they need to develop alternatives to single-occupancy vehicles, and sets forth a series of case studies that show how transportation demand management programs have worked in a variety of campus communities, ranging from small towns to large cities. The case studies in Transportation and Sustainable Campus Communities highlight what works and what doesn't, as well as describing the programmatic and financial aspects involved. No other book has surveyed the topic and produced viable options for reducing the parking, pollution, land use, and traffic problems that are created by an over-reliance on automobiles by students, faculty, and staff. Transportation and Sustainable Campus Communities is a unique source of information and ideas for anyone concerned with transportation planning and related issues.

Book Transportation and Sustainable Communities

Download or read book Transportation and Sustainable Communities written by Institute of Transportation Engineers and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the resource papers (12) that were written for presentation at the 1997 ITE International Conference on Transportation and Sustainable Communities: Challenges and Opportunities, held on March 23 through March 26, 1997, in Tampa, Florida. This was the 13th in a series of annual ITE conferences to provide transportation professionals with information on what has been done, what is being done, and what can be done to meet current and future challenges and to take advantage of opportunities. The papers were written to address community demands for more livability and sustainability, and for transportation professionals to plan, design, and operate transportation facilities to that end. The resource papers contain information that will help transportation professionals employed by federal, state, regional, and local government agencies, consulting firms, universities, and industry meet this challenge. These papers address the issues, experiences, and opportunities relating to neighborhood traffic calming, neotraditional neighborhood developments, enhancing multimodal approaches through traffic engineering, managing land use and accessibility, assessing costs and benefits, role of State DOTs, and preparing transportation officials for the 21st century.

Book Policy in Motion

Download or read book Policy in Motion written by Lauren Michele and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While state and federal actions have been taken to set new requirements for vehicle efficiency and fuels, tackling travel behavior policies that reduce vehicle-miles-traveled and improve transportation network management is needed if California is to reduce its transportation sector's 38 percent contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. California's unique democracy and global economy is unparallel to any other union. The State is setting new policy directions for sustainable living through transportation planning, but outdated regulatory frameworks must be aligned with supporting paradigm shifts if California is to move forward in a truly unified vision for people-oriented development and transportation. "This book examines California's transportation planning initiatives since AB 32, with a nuanced eye toward the State's particular rules, laws, politics, and institutions. Lauren Michele provides insights and lessons for policymakers and practitioners-in California and elsewhere-as they strive to create more sustainable communities and transportation systems." --Dr. Daniel Sperling; Director/Professor, Institute of Transportation Studies, UC Davis In a time where both state and federal efforts are pointing toward sustainable planning, Lauren Michele covers five key topics that are necessary for policymakers practitioners to understand in order to implement sustainable transportation solutions at all levels of government: The Four Circles of GHG Reduction Strategies from Travel Behavior: categorizes the existing literature on GHG reduction ranges from land use and transportation strategies into four major themes Planning Theory and Frameworks in California: analyzes how environmental review frameworks, funding structures, and the land use/transportation planning process work at the local, regional, state, and federal levels Implementing SACOG's Blueprint and Metropolitan Transportation Plan: reveals what aspects of California government need policy reform in order to successfully implement SB 375's "Sustainable Communities Strategies" through an analysis of SACOG's Blueprint process, successes, and challenges Recommendations for New Policy Frameworks in California: contains suggestions for statute changes, agency actions, and framework reforms that support AB 32, SB 375, AB 857, and SB 391 objectives Creating a Federal Framework for Integrated Planning: provides recommended language for evolving federal climate/energy bills and the transportation reauthorization to support GHG reduction through the planning process

Book Planning for Sustainability

Download or read book Planning for Sustainability written by Stephen M. Wheeler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can human communities sustain a long-term existence on a small planet? This challenge grows ever more urgent as the threat of global warming increases. Planning for Sustainability presents a wide-ranging, intellectually well-grounded and accessible introduction to the concept of planning for more sustainable and livable communities. The text explores topics such as how more compact and walkable cities and towns might be created, how local ecosystems can be restored, how social inequalities might be reduced, how greenhouse gas emissions might be lowered, and how more sustainable forms of economic development can be brought about. The second edition has been extensively revised and updated throughout, including an improved structure with chapters now organized under three sections: the nature of sustainable planning, issues central to sustainable planning, and scales of sustainable planning. New material includes greater discussion of climate change, urban food systems, the relationships between public health and the urban environment, and international development. Building on past schools of planning theory, Planning for Sustainability lays out a sustainability planning framework that pays special attention to the rapidly evolving institutions and power structures of a globalizing world. By considering in turn each scale of planning—international, national, regional, municipal, neighborhood, and site and building—the book illustrates how sustainability initiatives at different levels can interrelate. Only by weaving together planning initiatives and institutions at different scales, and by integrating efforts across disciplines, can we move towards long-term human and ecological well-being.
