It gives a fundamental insight into the effects of process variables and how they interact, allowing a predictive approach to design and enabling test results to be assessed in a more meaningful way. The theory described is also generally applicable to all kinds of internally pressurized cylindrical pressure vessels and pipes where hoop reinforcement is an integral part of the design. Designing high-pressure gas cylinders using composites is a relatively new and rapidly developing technology, exploiting recent advances in high-strength lightweight synthetic fibres. Traditionally, only metals have been used, but clearly weight is a major consideration in the efficiency of gas cylinders. Lightweight composite cylinders offer considerable advantages over heavier all-metal alternatives, provided concerns over safety can be allayed. Manufacture of composite gas cylinders has relied primarily on costly design by testing to ensure that stringent safety standards are met. With new European and International Standards backed by recently introduced legislation Hoop-wrapped Composite Internally Pressurized Cylinders Development and Application of a Design Theory provides the industry with a much-needed, reliable, and transparent methodology for the design of hoop-wrapped, composite gas cylinders.

The hoop-wrapped cylinders manufactured in accordance with this document are only used for the compressed natural gas storage containers for vehicles that are fixed on vehicles and filled in compliance with GB 18047 and used as a vehicle fuel. Additional loads due to external forces are not included in the conditions of use.

Based on this data, it then highlights the potential offered by the proposed approval procedure based on probabilistic safety assessment After addressing the economic potential of probabilistic safety assessments, the book details working procedures and improving cycles and (slow) bursts as methods for assessing residual strength. It then discusses methods for statistically evaluating test data, as well as sample- size and distribution-character considerations. A definition of sample strength is elaborated in terms of the performance sheets developed by the author. On this basis, it discusses safety as a property of service life and interpreted as an issue of degradation, and explores aspects of artificial aging for simulating the end-of-life reliability level.
