Book Transport Properties of Concrete

Download or read book Transport Properties of Concrete written by Peter A. Claisse and published by Woodhead Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport Properties of Concrete covers how to measure the ability of ions and fluids to move through concrete material, and how to use the results to model performance. These transport properties largely determine the durability of concrete and of steel embedded within it, as well as the effectiveness of structures such as landfill containment barriers. The book begins by explaining in detail what transport properties are and how to write computer models for transport processes. Early chapters present and explain computer models written in basic code. Coverage then proceeds to a wide range of tests for the transport properties of concrete, and methods for calculating the values for these properties from the test results using analytical and numerical models. The final chapters then show how the values obtained can be used to predict the durability of reinforced concrete, to model the effect of gas pressure, and to model waste containment structures. A number of practical examples are given, in which the calculations and computer models have been applied to real experimental data. Transport Properties of Concrete provides a comprehensive examination of the subject, and will be of use to all concerned with the durability and effectiveness of concrete structures. Provides a detailed understanding of the various transport mechanisms that take place during testing in concrete Shows how to obtain fundamental transport properties

Book The Modelling of Microstructure and its Potential for Studying Transport Properties and Durability

Download or read book The Modelling of Microstructure and its Potential for Studying Transport Properties and Durability written by H. Jennings and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From July 10th through July 13th, 1994, an informal workshop co-organized by RILEM committees 116-PCD and 123-MME was held at Saint-Remy-Ies Chevreuse, France, and attended by 38 delegates from 16 countries. Twenty-nine papers were presented, converging the general subjects of modelling micro structures and predicting durability of concrete and other cement-based materials. A short summary follows: G. M. Idom's paper entitled "Modelling Research for Concrete Engineering" serves as an introduction to the workshop, presenting an overview of modelling research with the conelusion that the broad practica1 objective is to produce high-quality concrete. This means that many characteristics, ranging from rheology to alkali-silica reaction, must be modelled. In other words, the system must be understood. Idom's paper sets the stage for papers in two general areas: 1) models and 2) transport properties. After this, abrief survey of the develop ment of microstructurally-based models is presented. A elose relationship between computer power and speed is suggested. The first group of papers on models covers the subjects of scale and resolution. Most models define and predict characteristics of the pore system, which range in scale from nanometer to millimeter. Various types ofnetworks are proposed in these papers. A good microstructural model must describe the pores and other phases at ascale appropriate to the properties that the model predicts. Also, a good model should be based on fundamental knowledge. In the case of cement-based materials, the important properties may depend on the microstructure, especially the porosity, at several scales.

Book Survey of Concrete Transport Properties and Their Measurement Classic Reprint

Download or read book Survey of Concrete Transport Properties and Their Measurement Classic Reprint written by Nicos S. Martys and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survey of Concrete Transport Properties and Their Measurement Concrete is one of the most widely used building materials in the construction of the nation's infrastructure including highways, bridges, water supply and sewage systems, harbors, locks, dams, tunnels and buildings. Over 500 million tons of concrete are produced in the United States each year of which a significant fraction is used for repair and rehabilitation rather than new construction. The service life and utility of concrete strongly depends on its transport properties li.e. Permeability, sorptivity and chloride permeability). For example, concrete is a building material with potential use for long term storage of hazardous substances such as nuclear and toxic wastes. In such applications it is essential that concrete have a very low permeability. On the other hand, it has been suggested that very low permeability high performance-concrete (hpc) may have serious deficiencies as a building material due to possible spalling when subject to high temperatures resulting from fires. Although concrete is commonly thought of as a static or unchanging material, it is, over the typical service life of a structure, a dynamical changing composite material which may undergo considerable degradation. The ingress of potentially deleterious materials such as chlorides, sulfates and water by diffusion and capillary transport can lead to the corrosion of steel reinforcement or a reduction of strength due to cracking by frost or sulfate attack. Clearly, a variety of transport mechanisms play an important role in the degradation of concrete and must be better understood to mitigate such processes. Book Laboratory Comparison of Several Tests for Evaluating the Transport Properties of Concrete

Download or read book Laboratory Comparison of Several Tests for Evaluating the Transport Properties of Concrete written by Daniel Stephen Lane and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transport properties of concrete are a primary element in determining the durability of concrete. In this study, several new test methods that directly measure aspects of fluid and ionic transport in concrete were examined. ASTM C 1543 and ASTM C 1556 provide the means for determining the apparent chloride diffusion coefficient, which is the controlling parameter for chloride ion migration in saturated pore systems. The chloride diffusion coefficient is an important input in service-life models for reinforced concrete. ASTM C 1585 measures the rate of absorption of water into the capillary pore system at a standard degree of saturation and thus provides a measure of fluid ingress and movement in concrete subject to drying conditions. These methods more accurately and completely describe the means of transport in concrete and should help improve the understanding and assessment of these important characteristics.

Book Physical Properties of Concrete and Concrete Constituents

Download or read book Physical Properties of Concrete and Concrete Constituents written by Jean-Pierre Ollivier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-12-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the rheological properties of fresh concrete, the hydration phenomenon of cement responsible for structuration, the relationship between the characteristics of the porous solid obtained and its mechanical performances or resistance to the aggressive penetration requires a complex knowledge of the physicochemistry of reactive porous materials. The development of simple formulation rules therefore requires the assimilation of this knowledge and a good command of the properties of these materials. The purpose of this book is to provide the mix designer with useful knowledge on granular materials and porous materials, which will enable the innovative design of concrete. Topics covered include the characterization of granular materials, the concepts of porosity and specific surface area, and the transport properties (diffusion and permeation) of concrete. Some of these topics are already covered in other general books dedicated to granular or porous materials. The objective here is to bring them together in one book by adapting them for use by concrete specialists. Applications in the form of exercises are offered at the end of each chapter to enable readers to assimilate the theoretical knowledge and to apply such knowledge to concrete problems encountered in civil engineering. Contents 1. Description of Granular Materials, Definitions. 2. Granulometry. 3. Specific Surface Area of Materials. 4. Voids in Granular Materials and the Arrangement of Grains. 5. Voids in Concrete. 6. The Fundamentals of Diffusion. 7. Permeability.
