Book excerpt: There are many situations in which a continuum view of granular systems does not fully capture the relevant mechanics. In order for engineers to be able to design systems for transporting granular materials, there needs to be an understanding of the mechanics of granular systems and how their non-continuous behavior affects their dynamics. This thesis takes an example of a granular system from nature and uses this system to analyze the way granular materials interact with flexible boundaries. This thesis focuses on digging in granular materials. Pinto bean plant roots were used as a model biological system, and experiments using photoelastic grains were performed to quantify the effect of the inhomogeneous forces in the substrate on the root growth. It was determined that the pinto bean roots grew between grains when the force between those grains was less than 0.5 N. This value was time-dependent and showed a previously-unquantified strengthening of the roots over time. Also, while the roots were growing in the granular substrate, they altered the forces between grains by an average of 110 mN. An analytical model of digging energy was developed to investigate the differences between diggers that are much larger than the grain size and diggers that are much smaller than the grain size. Based on this model, a design tool was created so that designers could quickly identify promising technologies for digging based on the size scale of the grains and the desired size of the digger. Finally, two elements of the plant roots, mechanical flexibility and an actuated tip, were used to create robotic diggers to quantify the associated savings in digging energy. Increasing the mechanical flexibility of the digger was shown to result in energy savings of more than 50% when decreasing the bending modulus by one order of magnitude. However, large variations in the data were observed as a result of the inhomogeneity of the granular system. These variations were quantified and were consistent with previous literature regarding forces in granular systems. Also, a numerical model was created that demonstrates that the increase in digging efficiency can be attributed to the flexibility of the digger. Experiments with diggers whose tip orientation cycled from side to side show that it is more energy-efficient to dig with this active tip only if the energy used to create the changing tip orientation is less than 2.5 x 10-5 J per mm dug.

Problems and questions are initially posed at the level of kinetic theory, which describes particle densities in full or reduced phase-space. Some answers become clear through hydrodynamics, which describes the evolution of slowly evolving fields. Granular fluctuating hydrodynamics, which builds a bridge to the most recent results in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, is also introduced. Further and more interesting answers come when the dynamics of a massive intruder are discussed. Such non-equilibrium stochastic process offers a more precise and compact picture of the features foreseen at the more detailed levels of description. The dynamics of an intruder diffusing in a granular fluid reveal the clearest connection with recent theories on stochastic energetics and stochastic thermodynamics.

Since then, the conference took place in Duisburg (1997), Stuttgart (1999), Nagoya (2001), Delft (2003) and Berlin (2005). The aim of TGF conferences is to facilitate the exchanges between various ?elds dealing with transport. When the conference was created, the ?elds that were represented were road tra?c and granular ?ow – hence the name of the series. Since then, the scope of the conference has been enlarged to include in particular collective motion in biology (molecular motors), a subject which turns out to have many connections with the two original ones. Transversal themes have emerged. For TGF07, a session was speci?cally devoted to the subject of networks. An important theme is also the one of self-propelled particles. It ranges from granular ?ows with anisotropic grains, to collective motion of animals, and to pedestrian tra?c. We were very happy to organize the 2007 occurrence of TGF in Orsay (France), at the University Paris-Sud. The conference was organized mainly by the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics (LPT), with the help of the Labo- tory FAST (Fluides, Automatique et Syst` emes Thermiques) – these two la- ratories are both associated to the CNRS (Centre National pour la Recherche Scienti?que) – and of the GARIG Group at INRETS.

Book excerpt: Back Cover Text: This book addresses the study of the gaseous state of granular matter in the conditions of rapid flow caused by a violent and sustained excitation. In this regime, grains only touch each other during collisions and hence, kinetic theory is a very useful tool to study granular flows. The main difference with respect to ordinary or molecular fluids is that grains are macroscopic and so, their collisions are inelastic. Given the interest in the effects of collisional dissipation on granular media under rapid flow conditions, the emphasis of this book is on an idealized model (smooth inelastic hard spheres) that isolates this effect from other important properties of granular systems. In this simple model, the inelasticity of collisions is only accounted for by a (positive) constant coefficient of normal restitution. The author of this monograph uses a kinetic theory description (which can be considered as a mesoscopic description between statistical mechanics and hydrodynamics) to study granular flows from a microscopic point of view. In particular, the inelastic version of the Boltzmann and Enskog kinetic equations is the starting point of the analysis. Conventional methods such as Chapman-Enskog expansion, Grad’s moment method and/or kinetic models are generalized to dissipative systems to get the forms of the transport coefficients and hydrodynamics. The knowledge of granular hydrodynamics opens up the possibility of understanding interesting problems such as the spontaneous formation of density clusters and velocity vortices in freely cooling flows and/or the lack of energy equipartition in granular mixtures.
