David Gillen, University of British Columbia, Canada Acclaim for the second edition: 'To the literature in the field of transport economics, this is a most welcome addition. Primarily a textbook on theory, it also contains many references to applied studies. . . The book is written in a lucid style and consequently is easy to read and understand.' J.P. Hanlon, Transport 'It is admirably structured, with an introductory chapter placing transport in its economic context and relating transport and location economics.' Urban Studies 'This book is written in a clear, easy to understand style. It is essential reading for those studying for the Institute's Transport Economics examination as well as for undergraduate and postgraduate students of the subject. . . The book offers good value for money and is strongly recommended to anyone with an interest in transport economics.' M.R. Cairns, Transport ' . . . this book does read very much like a textbook; it explains economic concepts clearly, often in both words and mathematical equations, and identifies their relevance in the transport field. . . Transport Economics does provide a good basis with which to understand most of the issues behind what is one of the fastest moving areas of environmental activity in an area where most books will be out of date almost as soon as they are written anyway.' Marcus Enoch, Environmental Politics Transport Economics is a thoroughly revised edition of a well-established textbook which applies economic analysis to transport issues. Each chapter has been carefully reworked and includes new material dealing with the regulation of transport markets. The theoretical content is supported with considerable empirical evidence drawn from a wide range of international sources. Although aimed primarily at university students, this volume is accessible to non-specialists who have an interest in transport economics. It has no modal bias but rather examines in general terms the many aspects of the demand for, and supply of, transport together with the various methods of government intervention needed to ensure that social and environmental criteria are attained. This successful and widely adopted textbook has been meticulously revised and updated for the third edition. As the best intermediate text currently available, it will be welcomed by students, policymakers and all those concerned with the supply of transport services.

Book Telecommunications Transportation and Location

Download or read book Telecommunications Transportation and Location written by Kenneth John Button and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the economics of the evolving interface between the movement of people, goods and information (telecommunications). It illustrates the increasing importance of information flows in relation to how people move about, the ways that goods are transported and on land-use patterns. The authors show how the linkages involved are not static but vary as technology develops, as social priorities shift, and as policymakers adjust institutional structures. The situation is evolving but, nevertheless, from a public policy and a narrower commercial, business perspective, it is important to gain broad insights into what is occurring and the ways that telecommunications, transportation, and location interact. This is the focus of the book. Telecommunications, Transportation and Location contains both synthesis and interpretations of what others have found in regard to these interactions as well as new work that extends earlier findings. The material is presented in a rigorous yet accessible manner to open it to a wide audience of practitioners concerned with policymaking within various levels of government and within private business. Researchers and academics teaching courses including transportation planning, communications, regional science, urban and regional planning, urban and regional economics and transport economics will find much to engage them within this book. It will also be very useful to logistics professionals, and policymakers and practitioners involved in transportation planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major enterprises shape our lives in countless ways: big tech and 'surveillance media' that affect democratic debate, algorithms that influence online shopping, transport to work and home, energy and agriculture corporations that drive climate damage, and public services that provide our education, health, water, and housing. The twentieth century experienced swings between private and public ownership, between capitalism and socialism, without any settled, principled outcome, and without settling major questions of how enterprises should be financed, governed and the rights we have in them. This book's main question is 'are there principles of enterprise law', and, if they are missing, 'what principles of enterprise law should there be'? Principles of Enterprise Law gives a functional account of the 'general' enterprise laws of companies, investment, labour, competition and insolvency, before moving into specific enterprises, from universities to the military. It is an original guide to our economic constitution and human rights.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Transport Economics

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Transport Economics written by Jonathan Cowie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Transport Economics offers the first state of the art overview of the discipline of transport economics as it stands today, reflective of key research and policy. Transport is an important area of study and one which is problem rich, stimulating a great deal of debate in areas which impact on everyday lives. Much of this focuses on the practicalities of the modern-day phenomenon of mass movement and all of the issues which surround it. The discipline of economics is central to this debate, and consequently the study and application of transport economics has a chief role to play in seeking to address subjects relating to major transport issues. It can be argued that at the very heart of any transport issue or problem lies the underlying economics of the situation – understand that and you alleviate the problem. Featuring contributions from world-leading scholars and practitioners from across the globe, all of the chapters within this book are written from a practical perspective; theory is applied and developed using real-world examples. The book examines concepts, issues, ideas and practicalities of transport provision in five key topic areas: public transport public transport reform economic development and transport modelling transport and the environment freight transport. A real strength of the book is in linking theory to practice, and hence the ‘economics’ that are examined in this text are not the economics of the abstract, but rather the economics of everyday living. Practical and insightful, this volume is an essential reference for any student or researcher working in all areas of transport provision, ranging from planning, appraisal, regulation and freight; and for all practitioners looking to develop their professional knowledge and who are seeking professional accreditation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Livermore’s succinct monograph provides a useful overview of Australian transport law, as of July 2017...This is a readable and useful publication which provides a good summary of Australian transport law. Simon Baughen, Professor of Shipping Law, Swansea University /Artho Cyraith Llongau. Extract from full review of the 3rdedition in Journal of International Maritime Law, January 2020 Transport Law in Australia is a clear and well researched resource covering all modes of transport. It should be the first port of call for logistic professionals, transport lawyers and students when seeking to understand the legalities of transport in Australia. Russell Wiesse, Director CTG Law This updated edition of Transport Law in Australia describes the main sources of transport law, jurisdiction and courts, state immunity, and the legal role of transport intermediaries. The scope of the book is broad in that it encompasses maritime, road, rail, air, and multimodal transport law. Almost half the book is devoted to maritime and shipping law which, for an island nation with over 95% of its international trade carried by sea, is as important as it is unsurprising. Whilst works of this nature have the potential to be a ‘dry’ read, in this case the author has taken an approach which makes the book eminently readable and usable. The text is well supported by in-depth research and enhanced with comprehensive referencing, footnotes, tables of cases and statutes, as well as a selected bibliography. With Australian society and the economy vitally dependent on all modes of transport this book will be a valuable addition for many in the transport community. This includes transport operators, shippers and freight forwarders, transport regulators and lawyers, as well as academics, researchers and students engaged in the study of transport. The author’s practical and masterful approach to the subject should go a long way to ensuring the success of Transport Law in Australia as well as being a valuable addition to the body of literature on this important topic. Barrie Lewarn, Professor, Australian Maritime College, National Centre for Ports and Shipping, University of Tasmania Review of the 2nd edition of Transport Law in Australia

Book Wilful Misconduct in International Transport Law

Download or read book Wilful Misconduct in International Transport Law written by Duygu Damar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-17 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main rationale of the conventions on international transport law is to limit the liability of the carrier. However, an aspect common to these conventions is that in cases of "wilful misconduct" the carrier is liable without any financial limitation. "Wilful misconduct" denoting a high degree of fault is an established term in English law. The Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules relating to International Carriage by Air (Warsaw Convention) of 1929 was the first international convention on transport law where the term was employed. A definition of "wilful misconduct", which can be found in later conventions regarding carriage of goods and passengers as well, was implemented in the Hague Protocol of 1955, amending the Warsaw Convention. However, the question as to exactly which degree of fault constitutes "wilful misconduct" has to date remained controversial and unanswered. This work seeks to answer this question. To this end, the historical background of the term, together with its function and role in marine insurance law, case law and international transport law, are examined from a comparative perspective.
