Book The Handbook of Globalisation

Download or read book The Handbook of Globalisation written by Jonathan Michie and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Admirably edited. With a wealth of applied detail, the contributors visit all the interesting questions in international political economy. Ciaran Driver, University of London, UK Even those who dislike the word globalisation can not avoid using it. This remarkable book clarifies the concept of globalisation, and the ways in which it should be used. It is an invaluable guide to the economic and social processes of the 21st century. Daniele Archibugi, Italian National Research Council, Italy This Handbook brings together a stunning range of writing on a subject which has tended to be wrapped in mystery and controversy. From the opening chapters that debate the newness of globalisation to the chapters that analyse the hegemony of neo-liberalism this book weaves together the most up to date and challenging academic work. . . Vishnu Padayachee, University of Natal, Durban, South Africa Globalisation is a ubiquitous buzzword. But what does it really mean and what are its implications for human well-being? The Handbook of Globalisation pulls together current work from a sterling cast of innovative thinkers on these questions. It is no surprise that one finds penetrating insights and innovative policy approaches on nearly every page. Robert Pollin, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, US Globalisation is an issue that has been high on the research agenda for several years, spawning a vast and at times unwieldy literature. A concept often ill-defined, it has generated a plethora of unresolved and fiercely contested questions, the nature of which depends on which side of the ideological divide one stands. With original contributions from the leading commentators in the field and an overarching introduction from the editor, the concerns of this major new Handbook are two-fold; firstly, to redefine the concept of globalisation and dispel the haze that surrounds it by a systematic and thorough examination of the debate; secondly, to push out the frontiers of current critical thinking on the role and impact of globalisation, on the winners and losers in the process, and on the implications for society, the economy and governance, offering a genuinely inter-disciplinary perspective. This Handbook represents the definitive guide to what is an all-pervasive issue. It should be on the bookshelves of all scholars and policymakers with an interest in the global economy and in the functioning of an increasingly globalised world.

Book The Return of the Policy That Shall Not Be Named Principles of Industrial Policy

Download or read book The Return of the Policy That Shall Not Be Named Principles of Industrial Policy written by Reda Cherif and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial policy is tainted with bad reputation among policymakers and academics and is often viewed as the road to perdition for developing economies. Yet the success of the Asian Miracles with industrial policy stands as an uncomfortable story that many ignore or claim it cannot be replicated. Using a theory and empirical evidence, we argue that one can learn more from miracles than failures. We suggest three key principles behind their success: (i) the support of domestic producers in sophisticated industries, beyond the initial comparative advantage; (ii) export orientation; and (iii) the pursuit of fierce competition with strict accountability.

Book China s Changing Trade and the Implications for the CLMV

Download or read book China s Changing Trade and the Implications for the CLMV written by Mr.Koshy Mathai and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s trade patterns are evolving. While it started in light manufacturing and the assembly of more sophisticated products as part of global supply chains, China is now moving up the value chain, “onshoring” the production of higher-value-added upstream products and moving into more sophisticated downstream products as well. At the same time, with its wages rising, it has started to exit some lower-end, more labor-intensive sectors. These changes are taking place in the broader context of China’s rebalancing—away from exports and toward domestic demand, and within the latter, away from investment and toward consumption—and as a consequence, demand for some commodity imports is slowing, while consumption imports are slowly rising. The evolution of Chinese trade, investment, and consumption patterns offers opportunities and challenges to low-wage, low-income countries, including China’s neighbors in the Mekong region. Cambodia, Lao P.D.R., Myanmar, and Vietnam (the CLMV) are all open economies that are highly integrated with China. Rebalancing in China may mean less of a role for commodity exports from the region, but at the same time, the CLMV’s low labor costs suggest that manufacturing assembly for export could take off as China becomes less competitive, and as China itself demands more consumption items. Labor costs, however, are only part of the story. The CLMV will need to strengthen their infrastructure, education, governance, and trade regimes, and also run sound macro policies in order to capitalize fully on the opportunities presented by China’s transformation. With such policy efforts, the CLMV could see their trade and integration with global supply chains grow dramatically in the coming years.

Book Dynamics In Pacific Asia

Download or read book Dynamics In Pacific Asia written by Kurt W. Radtke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998. The writing of this book started in earnest with the establishment of a joint research group that gathered at the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Study (Wassenaar, The Hague) between September 1995 and June 1996. The starting point was the question, to what extent and in what way the new dynamics in (South)east Asia would influence Europe's global position, and more specifically, how these changes should be conceptualized in order to assist in the formulation of new policies to deal with the new international environment. Most contributors to this book would agree that there is ample reason to view these changes as an opportunity for Europe, and not just as a threat.

Book Transnational Corporations and Business Networks

Download or read book Transnational Corporations and Business Networks written by Henry Wai-Chung Yeung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon extensive field research in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, this book focuses on networks of business and personal relationships as a key means of transnational operations. The book highlights the role of Chinese business networks in facilitating the emergence of transnational corporations from an Asian newly industrialised economy - Hong Kong. It is a timely theoretical and empirical contribution to the recent debate on the nature and operations of 'bamboo networks' within the global economy and their role in the rapid economic growth and regional integration among Asia-Pacific economies.
