Book Corporate Imperialism

Download or read book Corporate Imperialism written by Norman Girvan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 1976. The anticolonial revolution of the 1950s challenged the edifice of political imperialism established by the European powers in the nineteenth century. In the 1970s another revolution appears to be sweeping the Third World, a movement which seeks to challenge the new imperialism of the transnational corporations (TNCs) established in the twentieth century. These essays, written explicitly from a Third World perspective, suggest that conflict between Third World states and transnational corporations in natural resource industries is an inherent and dialectical result of a system of corporate imperialism.

Book The UN and Transnational Corporations

Download or read book The UN and Transnational Corporations written by Tagi Sagafi-nejad and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-16 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are transnational corporations (TNCs) and foreign direct investment beneficial or harmful to societies around the world? Since the birth of the United Nations more than 60 years ago, these questions have been major issues of interest and involvement for UN institutions. What have been the key ideas generated by the UN about TNCs and their relations with nation-states? How have these ideas evolved and what has been their impact? This book examines the history of UN engagement with TNCs, including the creation of the UN Commission and Centre on Transnational Corporations in 1974, the failed efforts of these bodies to craft a code of conduct to temper the revealed abuses of TNCs, and, with the advent of globalization in the 1980s, the evolution of a more cooperative relationship between TNCs and developing countries, resulting in the 1999 Global Compact.

Book Economic Nationalism in a Globalizing World

Download or read book Economic Nationalism in a Globalizing World written by Eric Helleiner and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is economic nationalism an outdated phenomenon in light of globalization? Economic Nationalism in a Globalizing World demonstrates the enduring, and even heightened, economic significance of national identities and nationalism in the current age. The volume's contributors, pioneers in the reinterpretation of economic nationalism, explore diverse ways in which national identities and nationalism continue to shape contemporary economic policies and processes. The authors examine the question in a range of geographical contexts and issues: European Union food politics, competitiveness strategies in New Zealand, East Asian development strategies, Japanese liberalization, monetary politics in Quebec and Germany, and post-Soviet economic reforms. Together, the cases explore the policy breadth of nationalism. It is not just a "protectionist" ideology but is in fact associated with a wide variety of economic policies, including support for economic liberalization and globalization.
