Book Transnational Cinema in Europe

Download or read book Transnational Cinema in Europe written by Manuel Palacio and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2013 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attempt to produce films for the international market has led to lively exchanges and meeting points between local and national identity discourses and global processes of identity formation. Co-productions alone can no longer be seen as an incentive for national cultural production. Rather, it is necessary to regard co-productions as a privileged site for an analysis of the relations between identity, nation, and culture. Transnational Cinema in Europe is the result of a collaboration of two research groups in Madrid and Vienna. The book consists of articles by members of both research groups, as well as by several other experts. (Series: Contributions to the European Theater, Film and Media Studies / Beitrage zur europaischen Theater-, Film- und Medienwissenschaft - Vol. 4)

Book Transnational Cinema

Download or read book Transnational Cinema written by Steven Rawle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This core teaching text provides a thorough overview of the recently emerged field of transnational film studies. Covering a range of approaches to analysing films about migrant, cross-cultural and cross-border experience, Steven Rawle demonstrates how film production has moved beyond clear national boundaries to become a product of border crossing finance and creative personnel. This comprehensive introduction brings together the key concepts and theories of transnational cinema, including genre, remakes, diasporic and exilic cinema, and the limits of thinking about cinema as a particularly national cultural artefact. It is an excellent course companion for undergraduate students of film, cinema, media and cultural studies studying transnational and global cinema, and provides both students and lovers of film alike with a strong grounding in this timely field of film studies.

Book Transnational German Cinema

Download or read book Transnational German Cinema written by Irina Herrschner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the notion of German cinema as both a national and increasingly transnational entity. It brings together chapters that analyse the international circuits of development and distribution that shape the emerging films as part of a contemporary “German cinema”, the events and spectacles that help frame and re-frame national cinemas and their discoverability, and the well-known filmmakers who sit at the vanguard of the contemporary canon. Thereby, it explores what we understand as German cinema today and the many points where this idea of national cinema can be interrogated, expanded and opened up to new readings. At the heart of this interrogation is a keen awareness of the technological, social, economic and cultural changes that have an impact on global cinemas more broadly: new distribution channels such as streaming platforms and online film festivals, and audience engagement that transcends national borders as well as the cinema space. International film production and financing further heightens the transnational aspects of cinema, a quality that is often neglected in marketing and branding of the filmic product. With particular focus on film festivals, this volume explores the tensions between the national and transnational in film, but also in the events that sit at the heart of global cinema culture. It includes contributions from filmmakers, cultural managers and other professionals in the field of film and cinema, as well as scholarly contributions from academics researching popular culture, film, and events in relation to Germany.

Book European Cinema and Television

Download or read book European Cinema and Television written by Ib Bondebjerg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers comparative studies of the production, content, distribution and reception of film and television drama in Europe. The collection brings together scholars from the humanities and social sciences to focus on how new developments are shaped by national and European policies and practices, and on the role of film and television in our everyday lives. The chapters explore key trends in transnational European film and television fiction, addressing issues of co-production and collaboration, and of how cultural products circulate across national borders. The chapters investigate how watching film and television from neighbouring countries can be regarded as a special kind of cultural encounter with the possibility of facilitating reflections on national differences within Europe and negotiations of what characterizes a national or a European identity respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyprus is better known as a site of conflict between Greek and Turkey, rather than for its film output. The authors seek to rectify this dearth of information by discussing the work of a new generation of filmmakers striving to engage with the island's traumatic legacies: anti-colonial struggles, post-colonial instability, interethnic conflict and war. Beginning from the cinema of the 1960s when the island became a republic, the study focuses on the recent decades and filmmakers currently exploring issues of conflict, memory, identity, nationalism, migration, gender and globalization, as well as the work of filmmakers who chose to cooperate across the ethnic divide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting new and diverse scholarship, this wide-ranging collection of 43 original chapters asks what European cinema tells us about Europe. The book engages with European cinema that attends to questions of European colonial, racialized and gendered power; seeks to decentre Europe itself (not merely its putative centres); and interrogate Europe’s various conceptualizations from a variety of viewpoints. It explores the broad, complex and heterogeneous community/ies produced in and by European films, taking in Kurdish, Hollywood and Singapore cinema as comfortably as the cinema of Poland, Spanish colonial films or the European gangster genre. Chapters cover numerous topics, including individual films, film movements, filmmakers, stars, scholarship, representations and identities, audiences, production practices, genres and more, all analysed in their context(s) so as to construct an image of Europe as it emerges from Europe’s film corpus. The Companion opens the study of European cinema to a broad readership and is ideal for students and scholars in film, European studies, queer studies and cultural studies, as well as historians with an interest in audio-visual culture, nationalism and transnationalism, and those working in language-based area studies.
