Book God in Translation

Download or read book God in Translation written by Mark S. Smith and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God in Translation offers a substantial, extraordinarily broad survey of ancient attitudes toward deities, from the Late Bronze Age through ancient Israel and into the New Testament. Looking closely at relevant biblical texts and at their cultural contexts, Mark S. Smith demonstrates that the biblical attitude toward deities of other cultures is not uniformly negative, as is commonly supposed. He traces the historical development of Israel's "one-god worldview, " linking it to the rise of the surrounding Mesopotamian empires. Smith's study also produces evidence undermining a common modern assumption among historians of religion that polytheism is tolerant while monotheism is prone to intolerance and violence.

Book excerpt: One of the most precarious and daunting tasks for sixteenth-century European missionaries in the cross-cultural mission frontiers was translating the name of «God» (Deus) into the local language. When the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) introduced the Chinese term Shangti as the semantic equivalent of Deus, he made one of the most innovative cross-cultural missionary translations. Ricci's employment of Shangti was neither a simple rewording of a Chinese term nor the use of a loan-word, but was indeed a risk-taking «identification» of the Christian God with the Confucian Most-High, Shangti. Strange Names of God investigates the historical progress of the semantic configuration of Shangti as the divine name of the Christian God in China by focusing on Chinese intellectuals' reaction to the strangely translated Chinese name of God.

Through the Eyes of Love shows us how operating from a place of love is the most effective way to walk in the Spirit. This book will help you grow in spiritual authority and learn how to speak powerful words. As someone who heard God’s voice at a young age, Shawn has been diligent to continue to seek the Lord’s voice for more than two decades as a sought-after international teacher. In this book, Shawn shares multiple first-person stories of people he has met and spoken to over the years. Whether sitting at a table eating dinner with billionaires or pulling over on the highway to give a construction worker a word of knowledge, Shawn is amazed at how often God wants to speak personally to people, from every area of life. If you pursue spiritual gifts—especially words of knowledge—you will begin to realize that knowing God’s thoughts shifts the lens through which you see people and culture. In fact, being on the receiving end of a direct message from God will open your spiritual eyes. It’s like seeing a color you never knew existed. As you sincerely pray and ask God what He wants to say to your coworkers, your neighbors, and your city, you will be surprised at how often He speaks.

Book Encounter

  • ISBN : 1636410553
  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Encounter written by Shawn Bolz and published by Charisma Media. This book was released on 2022 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest spiritual battles right now is over perspective--the way you see possibilities, limitations, and what God is doing. This book will help you encounter God in such a way that you are able to walk in His original design for you, which is to not only commune with Him through conversation but to be aligned with His mind. When you share His thoughts and perceptions, you will be able to live the abundant, supernatural, super-empowered life God desires for you. Humans are unique in that we were not just made in the image of God; we reflect His very nature. If we understood our spiritual, neurological, psychological, and even physical connection to God, we could bring solutions to every problem humanity faces--and many would be practical, even scientific, solutions. In this book, Shawn Bolz shares a series of rich, divine encounters that have defined his spiritual perspective so others can be released into new ways of thinking and experience an expansion of their spiritual intelligence. To walk with God, you need to know not only His heart but also His mind. As believers, we were designed to commune with God, sharing not only conversation with Him but also His thoughts and perceptions--to know His mind through His Spirit. When Adam and Eve walked with God in the cool of the day, they didn't always need the verbal communication that so limits humanity today. They had inner communication from their connectedness. This is the kind of connectedness Solomon, Joseph, Daniel, Esther, and the apostle Paul experienced, and this is what God wants to restore to His people today. This book will help readers gain a fresh vision of their faith so they can walk out their spirituality exactly as God intended and take their place in the coming move of God.

Book Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God

Download or read book Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God written by J. I. Packer and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2008-12-02 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this classic book, John Stott shows that Christian mission must encompass both evangelism and social action. He offers careful definitions of five key terms- mission, evangelism, dialogue, salvation and conversion. Through a thorough biblical exploration of these concepts, Stott provides a model for ministry to people's spiritual and physical needs alike. Ultimately, Stott points to the example of Jesus, who modeled both the Great Commission of proclamation and the Great Commandment of love and service. This balanced, holistic approach to mission points the way forward for the work of the church in the world. Market/Audience Church Leaders Pastors Students Those interested in Evangelism Endorsements 'A short but exceedingly powerful book. Packer shows that rather than precluding evangelism, God's sovereignty provides the most powerful incentive and support for it . . . Contains impressive depth and contains a thorough and satisfying treatment of the subject.' - DiscerningReader.com 'I've often recommended this book to faithful Christians who are confused about how they are to think about prayer, missions, giving-any area in which our efforts could be wrongly pitted against God's own necessary action. Packer introduces us to clear truths, handles Scripture with exemplary care, and supplies us with just the right amount of illustrations and application.' - From the foreword by Mark Dever, senior pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. Features and Benefits New mass market edition of a classic InterVarsity Press work on divine sovereignty and human responsibility Challenges extreme views on both sides of the issue Outlines a proper incentive and support for evangelism Over 100,000 copies in print
