Book Transitions in Mature Marriage

Download or read book Transitions in Mature Marriage written by John C Howell and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-08 with total page 125 pages. Physical changes of the body, economic and social adjustment to retirement, coping with needs for care-giving of senior parents, and personal interactions with marriage partners and friends all demand new emotional and spiritual resources. Transitions in Mature Marriage examines contemporary research on these issues and offers guidance for singles and married couples in making creative adjustments to these challenges. Some exciting new research focused on the fifty-plus years boomer generation is presented. Changing attitudes toward financial security, new role opportunities, and desire to give something back to the community by helping other people is discussed as passages, changes and conversions. Positive attention is given to the place of religious faith in forming personal character and resourcefulness for adaptation over the life cycle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges for young people making the transition to adulthood are greater today than ever before. Globalization, with its power to reach across national boundaries and into the smallest communities, carries with it the transformative power of new markets and new technology. At the same time, globalization brings with it new ideas and lifestyles that can conflict with traditional norms and values. And while the economic benefits are potentially enormous, the actual course of globalization has not been without its critics who charge that, to date, the gains have been very unevenly distributed, generating a new set of problems associated with rising inequality and social polarization. Regardless of how the globalization debate is resolved, it is clear that as broad global forces transform the world in which the next generation will live and work, the choices that today's young people make or others make on their behalf will facilitate or constrain their success as adults. Traditional expectations regarding future employment prospects and life experiences are no longer valid. Growing Up Global examines how the transition to adulthood is changing in developing countries, and what the implications of these changes might be for those responsible for designing youth policies and programs, in particular, those affecting adolescent reproductive health. The report sets forth a framework that identifies criteria for successful transitions in the context of contemporary global changes for five key adult roles: adult worker, citizen and community participant, spouse, parent, and household manager.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Physiology of Interpersonal Communication

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Physiology of Interpersonal Communication written by Lindsey Aloia and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication scholars have long recognized the importance of understanding associations between our bodies and communication messages and processes. In the past decade, there has been an increased focus on the role of physiology in interpersonal interactions, resulting in a surge of research exploring topics related to communication in close relationships. This growing line of research explores topics such as affectionate communication, forgiveness, communication apprehension, and social support. Contributing to the increase in physiological research on communication processes is a greater recognition of the bi-directional nature of the associations between communication and the body. Researchers study both the physiological outcomes of communication episodes (e.g., stress responses to conflict conversations), as well as the effects of physiology on communication process (e.g., the influence of hormones on post-sex communication). The Oxford Handbook of the Physiology of Interpersonal Communication offers a comprehensive review of the most prolific areas of research investigating both the physiological outcomes of interpersonal communication and the effects of physiology on interpersonal interactions. This volume brings together thirty-three leading scholars in the field and draws on research from communication studies, physiology, psychology, and neuroscience. Based on quantitative research methods, the Handbook serves as a resource for both researchers and students interested in investigating the mutual influence of physiology and communication in close relationships.

Book Growing Into a Mature Marriage

Download or read book Growing Into a Mature Marriage written by Delyce Collins and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage is an interesting trip. Never think that you're by yourself on the journey. Married people all over the world are having the same frustrations, questions, and challenges that led you to this book. The goal is not to insult your intelligence by minimizing the complications of life and marriage through comparisons to elementary schooling. I have been inspired, however, from a lifetime of working with children and teens as a young wife and mother; and being flooded with revelation of an undeniable connection between the standards and lessons set forth in the school system with those of an evolving marriage. I am ever indebted to the students and teachers who have taught me invaluable lessons and for being a doorway to a higher level of learning. Regarding educating ourselves into successful lives with our spouses and children, the cost of such an education is priceless and will leave you in positive cash flow rather than student debt. Great relationships refine the world. Learning how to better relate to ourselves and others will bring the peace we desire. Even if we focus only within our own circle of relationships, improving them will be a stimulant to influence change in the world-one marriage at a time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mrs. St. Ehrlich, a leading Yugoslav sociologist, seized the opportunity just before World War II to examine objectively the fast-vanishing style of life of Yugoslav peasants and villagers. This book, based on a widely distributed questionnaire and many interviews, provides a new picture, based on sympathetic understanding of family relationships and customs in 300 villages. The early chapters deal with the historical background of Yugoslavia and lay a groundwork for the assessment of the influence of centuries of Austrian and Ottoman domination, the brief years of independence, and the recent penetration of a money economy. Subsequent chapters explore attitudes and traditions relating to intra-family relationships. Originally published in 1966. Book Young Adult Development at the School to Work Transition

Download or read book Young Adult Development at the School to Work Transition written by E. Anne Marshall and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The school-to-work transition is a critical part of the human life-span for young adults, their families, and society. The timing of the transition varies greatly and its co-occurrence with a number of other life transitions make it challenging to summarize or generalize. Individual differences and normative developmental factors, as well as external contextual factors such as global pandemics, changing economic circumstances, workplace demands, and cultural shifts, intersect to create a range of challenges and opportunities for those navigating this transition. Written by internationally renowned scholars in developmental psychology, applied psychology, counseling, and sociology, the chapters in this book highlight the trends, issues, and actions that researchers, academics, practitioners, and policy makers need to consider in order to effectively support young adults' transition to work pathways. This volume provides an explicitly international perspective on this area, broad coverage of psychological topics on the school-to-work transition, and an inclusive focus on sub-groups and minority groups, making it a must-read for those who support young adults as they move from school to work.

Book It Never Goes Away

  • Author : Anne Lauren Koch
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press

Download or read book It Never Goes Away written by Anne Lauren Koch and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-10 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are transgendered, the feeling of wanting your body to match the sex you feel you are never goes away. For some, though, especially those who grew up before trans people were widely out and advocating for equality, these feelings were often compartmentalized and rarely acted upon. Now that gender reassignment has become much more commonplace, many of these people may feel increasing pressure to finally undergo the procedures they have always secretly wanted. Ken Koch was one of those people. Married twice, a veteran, and a world traveler, a health scare when he was sixty-three prompted him to acknowledge the feelings that had plagued him since he was a small child. By undergoing a host of procedures, he radically changed his appearance and became Anne Koch. In the process though, Anne lost everything that Ken had accomplished. She had to remake herself from the ground up. Hoping to help other people in her age bracket who may be considering transitioning, Anne describes the step by step procedures that she underwent, and shares the cost to her personal life, in order to show seniors that although it is never too late to become the person you always knew you were, it is better to go into that new life prepared for some serious challenges. Both a fascinating memoir of a well-educated man growing up trans yet repressed in the mid-twentieth century, and a guidebook to navigating the tricky waters of gender reassignment as a senior, It Never Goes Away shows how what we see in the television world of Transparent translates in real life.

Leading scholars from demography, sociology, family studies, and psychology provide original data and theoretical analyses that address the formation, nature, and significance of romantic relationships in emerging adults. Until recently, it was assumed that romantic relationships in emerging adults were not particularly important or formative. The material presented allows this assumption to be thoroughly evaluated. This volume is intended to be a resource for anyone interested in understanding romantic relationships in emerging adulthood. It is especially appropriate for classroom use in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in the fields of family sociology, human development and family studies, clinical and developmental psychology, and social work.

Book Migration Agrarian Transition and Rural Change in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Migration Agrarian Transition and Rural Change in Southeast Asia written by Philip F. Kelly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural life in Southeast Asia is being transformed by new and intensifying processes of migration and mobility. Migration out of rural areas creates new forms of class mobility, familial relations, production processes and income. Migration into rural areas creates a new and sometimes marginalized workforce, contestation over resource access, and the juxtaposition of culturally different groups. At the same time, everyday mobility stretches the spatial boundaries of village and family life. The bounded space of the village is no longer adequate to understand the dynamics that are driving (and resulting from) rural social change. This collection of original studies explores the cultural, economic and environmental dimensions of intensifying migration and mobility in rural Southeast Asia at multiple scales. Diverse processes are explored including rural-urban flows, rural-rural movement, everyday mobilities, and international migrations into regional and global labour markets. Drawing on fieldwork in six countries across the region, these essays also explore what migration means for our understanding of class, citizenship, gender and the state in a rapidly changing part of the world. This book was based on two parts of a special issue of Critical Asian Studies.

Book Maritime China in Transition 1750 1850

Download or read book Maritime China in Transition 1750 1850 written by Gungwu Wang and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2004 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection contains an introductory essay by Wang Gungwu and 22 studies originally read to an international conference organized by the Department of History, National University of Singapore. The contributions investigate diverse aspects of coastal Chinas commercial, demographic and other ties with the Nanyang region and other maritime areas, such as Japan, mainly in the period circa 1750-1850. This includes themes related to the microlevel of local changes, such as Chinese migration to Taiwan and various Southeast Asian destinations, as well as broader approaches to regional, institutional and other trends, combining philological and theoretical knowledge. In most cases both Asian and colonial sources were used to illustrate the dynamics of Chinas maritime orientation under the Qing, the growth of its overseas communities, and the impact of Chinese traders and sojourners on Europes outposts in the Malay world and around the South China Sea.

Book Korea Transition to Maturity

Download or read book Korea Transition to Maturity written by Danny M. Leipziger and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1988 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Korea's remarkable industrial progress has been virtually unparalleled in the developing world. Through painstaking effort and prudent management, the economy has been transformed from that of a poor agricultural society to a major economic power in Asia. In the process, standards of living have increased dramatically; however, with democratization have come even higher economic expectations. Korea now stands poised to shortly join the ranks of the developed nations on the basis of its export success, but it must also meet thenew demands of its people. This volume cuts across a broad spectrum of issues and highlights some of the remaining challenges to Korea's development. By including scholars from Korea as well U.S. academics and experts who deal directly with Korean economic policy, the book brings to bear a judicious blend of views on the hurdles to be overcome by Korean policy-makers in this final and arguably most difficult step in Korea's transition to maturity.
