Book Plan making for Sustainability

Download or read book Plan making for Sustainability written by Neil J. Ericksen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the introduction of Agenda 21 at Rio in 1991, some countries like the Netherlands and New Zealand were already leading the way with quite innovative approaches to environmental planning. Focusing on the New Zealand government's innovations in sustainable and environmental planning, particularly the Resource Management Act of 1991, this book highlights planning and governance under devolved and co-operative mandates. It uses multiple methods to evaluate the quality of policy statements and district plans prepared by regional and local councils respectively, as well as the various inter- and intra-organizational and institutional factors affecting them. It also analyses the quality of the plans' implementation through the consensus or permits process, and the quality of the environmental outcomes.

Book excerpt: "Thye revolutionary restructuring of the [local goverrnment] system in 1989 and the introduction of complementary managerial, operational and financial reforms have invigorated local government as never before in New Zealand's history. Public participation in the annual planning process, debate over the implications of the Treaty of Waitangi, and moves to win for local government its righful place in the constitutional sun spell the end of apathy about local bodies - they can no longer be viewed merely as uncontroversial providers of mundane services. ... Special emphasis is given [in this edition] to recent history, reformed structures and processes, the people involved and their roles, and the political setting within which local bodies meet the needs of their communities. ..."--Back cover.

Download or read book The Carbon Challenge written by Geoff Bartram and published by Bridget Williams Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing the threat of climate change, the world community has to meet a major challenge: how to limit global emissions at the least possible cost to the welfare of this and future generations. But actual policy implementation throughout the OECD has been slowed by entrenched opposition from emission-intensive sectors of the economy - reducing emissions produces losers as well as winners, and hard choices have to be made. This book charts New Zealand climate-change policy since 1990, focusing on the interface between technical effectiveness and political sustainability. The message is optimistic: New Zealand can make the changes required by Kyoto, at acceptable cost, if political leadership is exercised firmly and impartially.
