Book excerpt: An indispensable guide to making the transition to dual IFRS/GAAP financial reporting U.S. financial reporting will undergo an unprecedented level of change within the next several years. U.S. companies face a convergence between U.S. GAAP and IFRS, affecting several major accounting standards—most notably in the areas of leasing, revenue recognition, and financial instruments. It is imperative that U.S. companies understand these major changes and their business and operational implications. The IFRS U.S. GAAP Dual Reporting Handbook to First-Time Adoption offers a comprehensive treatment of both the principles and techniques of dual reporting under IFRS/U.S. GAAP, while exploring the practical implications for accounting professionals of reporting under both sets of standards. Takes an operating approach to the implementation and application of the dual standards Draws upon the author's extensive firsthand experience to dispel uncertainty and offer decision makers expert technical assistance Defines systemic changes businesses will need to make to accommodate IFRS standards Compares the two bodies of standards item-by-item and identifies solutions under one set of standards to issues arising under the other Explores the strategic impact of structuring a company for IFRS transition In addition to covering the full range of critical issues surrounding adopting IFRS, this indispensable handbook is a rich resource of dual reporting tools, including financial statement formats, charts of accounts, accounting check-lists, reconciliation schedules, and operating manuals.

Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, 2013 Ruth Benedict Book Prize presented by the Association for Queer Anthropology Honorable Mention, 2014 Distinguished Book Award presented by the Section on Sexualities of the American Sociological Association Winner of the 2013 Sylvia Rivera Award in Transgender Studies presented by the Center for Gay and Lesbian Studies Sex in Transition explores the lives of those who undermine the man/woman binary, exposing the gendered contradictions of apartheid and the transition to democracy in South Africa. In this context, gender liminality—a way to describe spaces between common conceptions of "man" and "woman"—is expressed by South Africans who identify as transgender, transsexual, transvestite, intersex, lesbian, gay, and/or eschew these categories altogether. This book is the first academic exploration of challenges to the man/woman binary on the African continent and brings together gender, queer, and postcolonial studies to question the stability of sex. It examines issues including why transsexuals' sex transitions were encouraged under apartheid and illegal during the political transition to democracy and how butch lesbians and drag queens in urban townships reshape race and gender. Sex in Transition challenges the dominance of theoretical frameworks based in the global North, drawing on fifteen years of research in South Africa to define the parameters of a new transnational transgender and sexuality studies.

Download or read book Our Common Journey written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-12-09 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World human population is expected to reach upwards of 9 billion by 2050 and then level off over the next half-century. How can the transition to a stabilizing population also be a transition to sustainability? How can science and technology help to ensure that human needs are met while the planet's environment is nurtured and restored? Our Common Journey examines these momentous questions to draw strategic connections between scientific research, technological development, and societies' efforts to achieve environmentally sustainable improvements in human well being. The book argues that societies should approach sustainable development not as a destination but as an ongoing, adaptive learning process. Speaking to the next two generations, it proposes a strategy for using scientific and technical knowledge to better inform future action in the areas of fertility reduction, urban systems, agricultural production, energy and materials use, ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation, and suggests an approach for building a new research agenda for sustainability science. Our Common Journey documents large-scale historical currents of social and environmental change and reviews methods for "what if" analysis of possible future development pathways and their implications for sustainability. The book also identifies the greatest threats to sustainabilityâ€"in areas such as human settlements, agriculture, industry, and energyâ€"and explores the most promising opportunities for circumventing or mitigating these threats. It goes on to discuss what indicators of change, from children's birth-weights to atmosphere chemistry, will be most useful in monitoring a transition to sustainability.

Book Unjust Transition

Download or read book Unjust Transition written by Emily Eaton and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-21T00:00:00Z with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2019, Regina’s Co-op Refinery Complex (CRC), a subsidiary of Federated Co-operative, locked out Unifor Local 594 after collective bargaining negotiations failed. CRC used the transition to a “low carbon” future as the justification for concessions on working conditions and reducing the workers' pension plan. The lockout demonstrates what a “just transition” means to fossil fuel corporations: rollbacks of collective bargaining, worker rights, cooperative spirit and environmental justice. In the name of a new future, Federated Co-operative and the Saskatchewan government trampled all over important worker rights — the right to strike and picket, occupational health and safety, pensions and collective bargaining. It also highlights the sorry state of co-operative values in Canada. As corporations and governments are poised to make a transition that will be detrimental to workers and communities, this books argues that solidarity between unions and community movements is absolutely necessary to make the transition away from fossil fuels a just one.

Book Poverty and Social Assistance in Transition Countries

Download or read book Poverty and Social Assistance in Transition Countries written by J. Braithwaite and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-10 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Declining incomes and growing income inequality have led to a rise in poverty in the transition economies of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. This study examines poverty and social assistance in six countries - Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Estonia, Russia, and the Kyrgyz Republic - comparing the poverty profiles and the correlates of poverty between the two regions. The study finds that the profile of poverty is more sharply defined in Eastern Europe than in the former Soviet Union, where poverty is more widespread. This holds the potential for better targeting of social assistance in Eastern Europe, and the study proposes a novel two-step approach to identify the poor.
