Book Transition Metal catalyzed Reactions of Organoboron Compounds

Download or read book Transition Metal catalyzed Reactions of Organoboron Compounds written by Yuri Bolshan and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes research conducted since May 2003 at the University of Toronto in the laboratory of Professor Robert A. Batey. The manuscript is divided into three chapters. Chapter one provides a general introduction to the transition metal-catalyzed reactions of potassium organotrifluoroborate salts and methods for their preparation. A comparison in reactivity between organoboronic acids and organotrifluoroborate salts in metal-catalyzed reactions under similar reaction conditions and the importance of polar protic solvents during transmetalation step are also discussed.Chapter two provides an overview of the addition of organometallic and organometalloid reagents to imines. Particular attention is drawn to the metal-catalyzed additions of organozinc and organoboron compounds as well as the development of chiral ligands associated with these transformations. The synthesis, role and advantages of a chiral auxiliary over currently available methods in the synthesis of chiral amines are also described. In addition, chapter two provides a description of our contribution to this area of synthetic organic chemistry, including the synthesis of enantiomerically enriched amines via rhodium-catalyzed addition of arylboron compounds to N-tert-butanesulfinyl aldimines. The addition occurred at room temperature to afford the corresponding amides in good yields and high diastereoselectivities. The removal of the auxiliary is achieved under acidic conditions without detectable epimerization at a chiral center. The practical utility of this methodology was shown via the synthesis of a cetirizine precursor with high degree of diastereoselctivity.Chapter three introduces traditional and modern synthetic methods for the synthesis of the enamide functionality with an emphasis on palladium and copper-catalyzed transformations. The utility of enamides as synthetic intermediates in organic chemistry and their presence in natural products and biologically active compounds are also described. Our contribution to the field of enamide synthesis is discussed, including the optimization and scope of a novel copper-catalyzed cross-coupling between amides and potassium alkenyltrifluoroborate salts, which occurs under an atmosphere of oxygen in the presence of molecular sieves to afford enamides in good yields.

Book Theoretical Aspects of Transition Metal Catalysis

Download or read book Theoretical Aspects of Transition Metal Catalysis written by Gernot Frenking and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-06-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal catalysis belongs to the most important chemical research areas because a ubiquitous number of chemical reactions are catalyzed by transition metal compounds. Many efforts are being made by industry and academia to find new and more efficient catalysts for chemical processes. Transition metals play a prominent role in catalytic research because they have been proven to show an enormous diversity in lowering the activation barrier for chemical reactions. For many years, the search for new catalysts was carried out by trial and error, which was costly and time consuming. The understanding of the mechanism of the catalytic process is often not very advanced because it is difficult to study the elementary steps of the catalysis with experimental techniques. The development of modern quantum chemical methods for calculating possible intermediates and transition states was a breakthrough in gaining an understanding of the reaction pathways of transition metal catalyzed reactions. This volume, organized into eight chapters written by leading scientists in the field, illustrates the progress made during the last decade. The reader will obtain a deep insight into the present state of quantum chemical research in transition metal catalysis.

Download or read book Cross Coupling Reactions written by S.L. Buchwald and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-01-11 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1972, a very powerful catalytic cycle for carbon-carbon bond formation was 2 first discovered by the coupling reaction of Grignard reagents at the sp -carbon. Over the past 30 years, the protocol has been substantially improved and expanded to other coupling reactions of Li,B,N,O,Al,Si,P,S,Cu,Mn,Zn,In,Sn, and Hg compounds. These reactions provided an indispensable and simple methodology for preparative organic chemists. Due to the simplicity and rel- bility in the carbon-carbon, carbon-heteroatom, and carbon-metalloid bo- formations,as well as high efficiency of the catalytic process, the reactions have been widely employed by organic chemists in various fields. Application of the protocol ranges from various syntheses of complex natural products to the preparation of biologically relevant molecules including drugs, and of sup- molecules, and to functional materials. The reactions on solid surfaces allow robot synthesis and combinatorial synthesis. Now, many organic chemists do not hesitate to use transition metal complexes for the transformation of org- ic molecules. Indeed, innumerable organic syntheses have been realized by the catalyzed reactions of transition metal complexes that are not achievable by t- ditional synthetic methods. Among these, the metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions have undoubtedly contributed greatly to the development of such a new area of “metal-catalyzed organic syntheses”. An excellent monograph for the cross-coupling reactions and other met- catalyzed C-C bond-forming reactions recently appeared in Metal-catalyzed Cross-coupling Reactions (Wiley-VCH,1998).

Book Synthesis of Functionalized Organoboron Compounds Through Copper I Catalysis

Download or read book Synthesis of Functionalized Organoboron Compounds Through Copper I Catalysis written by Koji Kubota and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes state-of-the-art borylation chemistry using copper(I) catalysis. Enantioselective reactions are included to afford a variety of functionalized, complex organoboronate esters, which will find wide application in asymmetric synthesis, drug discovery, and material science. Organoboron compounds are recognized as useful reagents in organic synthesis; therefore, great effort has been devoted to the development of a simple, mild, and efficient method for their preparation in the past several years. However, the synthesis of functionalized organoboron compounds remains a challenging issue because known reactions often require the use of highly reactive organometallic carbon nucleophiles. This book focuses on conceptually new, formal nucleophilic copper(I)-catalyzed borylation reactions with diboron compounds that show high selectivity and excellent functional group compatibility. Theoretical studies based on density functional theory calculations to understand the reaction mechanisms have also been described. Advances in this novel borylation chemistry will allow the rapid and efficient synthesis of complex molecules with potentially interesting properties in combination with the boron functionalization process.

Book Cooperative Reactivity of Boron Containing Molecules and Lewis Bases for Metal Free Catalysis

Download or read book Cooperative Reactivity of Boron Containing Molecules and Lewis Bases for Metal Free Catalysis written by Marc-André Légaré and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal catalysis is currently ubiquitous in all sectors of the chemical industry. The reactions it enables allow the production of countless useful chemicals. In the field of organic synthesis alone, the impact and development of catalytic reactions have been recognized several times by the award of Nobel prizes. The use of transition metals for catalysis, however, suffers from several drawbacks that include their high cost, their rarity and their potential toxicity and environmental impact. National and international agencies, as a matter of fact, regulate the trace amounts of residual metal that can be present in many end products. For this reason, there is great interest in discovering alternative catalysts produced from earth-abundant, nontoxic and inexpensive elements. Boron, as a light element of the main group, follows these criteria. The reactivity of organoboron compounds, however, is very different from that of organometallic complexes, and less adapted to typical catalytic process. For this reason, new concepts and new reactions have to be developed in order to introduce boron to the world of catalysis. In order to discover and develop novel ideas towards the design of boron catalysts, we have studied different instances in which Lewis bases influence the reactivity of boron compounds. We hypothesized that the combination of an organoborane and a Lewis base could achieve reactions that would be impossible for the separate units to accomplish. In a first case study, we have investigated in depth the reactivity of neutral adducts of borabenzene towards Lewis bases. We have found that, contrary to usual formulations, borabenzene, under the influence of a Lewis base, reacts as a nucleophile rather than an electrophile. The properties and reactivity of a great number of borabenzene compounds have been studied computationally and experimentally in a work that will be presented in this dissertation. Next, we have studied the reduction of carbon dioxide catalyzed by ambiphilic organoboron compounds. We describe new modes of coordination for boranes with Lewis bases and the application of these interactions to the reduction of CO2 to methanol derivatives. Finally, the culmination of our research efforts is shown as the rational development of a metal-free ambiphilic catalyst for the C-H bond activation and borylation of heteroarenes. In this dissertation, we describe the process by which we designed and implemented this catalytic reaction, as well as the specifics of the system.

Book excerpt: "Transition-metal-catalyzed reactions have revolutionized the field of organic chemistry, enabling for the efficient synthesis of biologically and pharmaceutically relevant molecules. To this extent, this dissertation will focus on the development of new catalytic methods for the synthesis of organic molecules. Chapter 2 reports on the multimetallic Ni- and Pd- cross-electrophile coupling of vinyl bromides with vinyl triflates to form highly substituted 1,3-dienes. These dienes were subjected to Diels-Alder reactions and mechanistic experiments were performed to elucidate the reaction mechanism. Chapter 3 discusses the [Co(TPP)]-catalyzed (TPP = tetraphenylporphyrin) formation of substituted piperidines. Optimization studies, substrate screening, and mechanistic investigations will be discussed. Chapter 4 elaborates on how substitution on a variety of simple ketones and esters affects selectivity for C-H bond activation by tris-(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate rhodium complex. Lastly, Chapter 5 discusses the synthesis of novel bis((4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)methyl)amine (ambox) ligated cobalt complexes. Importantly, this work provides the first insight into functionalization reactions of ambox-ligated cobalt complexes. Furthermore, these complexes are active towards hydrosilylation, hydroboration, C-C bond formation, and hydrogenation reactions alluding to the potential of this new class of cobalt-complexes for homogenous catalysis"--Page x.
