Book Drinking Water Distribution Systems

Download or read book Drinking Water Distribution Systems written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-12-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting and maintaining water distributions systems is crucial to ensuring high quality drinking water. Distribution systems-consisting of pipes, pumps, valves, storage tanks, reservoirs, meters, fittings, and other hydraulic appurtenances-carry drinking water from a centralized treatment plant or well supplies to consumers' taps. Spanning almost 1 million miles in the United States, distribution systems represent the vast majority of physical infrastructure for water supplies, and thus constitute the primary management challenge from both an operational and public health standpoint. Recent data on waterborne disease outbreaks suggest that distribution systems remain a source of contamination that has yet to be fully addressed. This report evaluates approaches for risk characterization and recent data, and it identifies a variety of strategies that could be considered to reduce the risks posed by water-quality deteriorating events in distribution systems. Particular attention is given to backflow events via cross connections, the potential for contamination of the distribution system during construction and repair activities, maintenance of storage facilities, and the role of premise plumbing in public health risk. The report also identifies advances in detection, monitoring and modeling, analytical methods, and research and development opportunities that will enable the water supply industry to further reduce risks associated with drinking water distribution systems.

Download or read book Guidelines for the Seismic Evaluation and Upgrade of Water Transmission Facilities written by John M. Eidinger and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE This TCLEE Monograph provides guidelines for the seismic evaluation and upgrade of water transmission facilities, including aqueducts, tunnels, canals, buried pipelines, elevated pipelines and their appurtenances. Topics covered include the performance of these facilities in past earthquakes; geotechnical issues; performance criteria; risk analysis; analysis methods; and a series of case studies. The guidelines can also be used for the design of new water transmission facilities. The case studies cover seismic designs and retrofits for the Mokelumne Aqueduct, the Contra Costa Canal, the Borel Canal, buried pipes at fault crossings, and auxiliary water fire fighting systems. The case studies also examine post-earthquake operations, financial issues, and the benefits of seismic retrofits.

Book Hydraulics of Pipeline Systems

Download or read book Hydraulics of Pipeline Systems written by Bruce E. Larock and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-09-28 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of its kind, this modern, comprehensive text covers both analysis and design of piping systems. The authors begin with a review of basic hydraulic principles, with emphasis on their use in pumped pipelines, manifolds, and the analysis and design of large pipe networks. After the reader obtains an understanding of how these principles are implemented in computer solutions for steady state problems, the focus then turns to unsteady hydraulics. These are covered at three levels:

Book Improving Water Supply Networks Fit for Purpose Strategies and Technologies

Download or read book Improving Water Supply Networks Fit for Purpose Strategies and Technologies written by Stuart Hamilton and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowing how to manage the losses from water supply networks and how to get to the next level in bettering your system is a major problem and one that is most common in the majority of water companies worldwide. Sometimes water companies set their sights too high and cannot deliver due to non-realistic targets setting. Of course this is considered or seen as a failure within the company or country when it is really just exceeding expectations of what can be delivered. The aim of System Losses from Water Supply Networks is to assist water companies to identify where they are on the ‘water loss ladder’ and what is required to move to the next level. The book will provide an understanding of what the water companies need to achieve and where they should be aiming for in their efforts to reduce water losses. The book provides useful and practical information on non-revenue water (NRW) issues and solutions enriched with relevant case studies.

Book Workshop on Condition Assessment Inspection Devices for Water Transmission Mains

Download or read book Workshop on Condition Assessment Inspection Devices for Water Transmission Mains written by Kevin Lillie and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interruption of water supply service during inspection of large-diameter transmission mains can have undesirable impacts on drinking water utilities and their customers. Likewise, the failure of a large transmission main can disrupt the supply of water to a large portion of a community, causing significant inconvenience and damage. Therefore, regular inspection of mains can assist utilities with preventative maintenance and minimize risks. Typically, utilities conduct condition assessment of buried pipes to determine a pipeline & rsquo;s serviceability and to consider if a new main or rehabilitation are needed. In the past, many condition-assessment methods involved the excavation and removal of pipe sections. Nondestructive evaluation techniques were rarely used or thought of as viable options. In addition, utilities were unable to use existing condition-assessment technologies for lines in service due to constraints and limitations, such as water levels in the mains. New technologies appear to offer some hope for an effective and affordable solution; however, details of these technologies may not be widely known. Consequently, the industry needs further evaluation of condition-assessment technologies that are capable of being used while maintaining service to the main.

Book Fault Detection Protection and Location on Transmission Line A Review

Download or read book Fault Detection Protection and Location on Transmission Line A Review written by Seada Hussen Adem and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2020 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1, Addis Ababa University (Addis Ababa Science and Technology University Addis Ababa, Ethiopia + Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University Istanbul, Turkey), language: English, abstract: Electrical power transmission systems suffer from unexpected failures due to various random causes. Un-predicted faults that occur in power systems are required to prevent from propagation to other area in the protective system. The functions of the protective systems are to detect, then classify and finally determine the location of the faulty. This paper presents some techniques that helps to find, determine and diagnosing faults in transmission line. Artificial neural networks, impedance measurement based methods, fuzzy expert method, wavelet transform and so on have been used to achieve fault identification and classification. This paper will review the type of fault that possibly occurs in an electric power system, the type of fault detection and location technique that are available together with the protection device that can be utilized in the power system to protect the equipment from electric fault.
