Book excerpt: There is no crueler cage than the confines of the human mind in this riveting sequel to Menagerie from the New York Times–bestselling author. When their coup of Metzger’s Menagerie is discovered, Delilah Marlow and her fellow cryptids find their newly won freedom brutally stripped away as they are sold into The Savage Spectacle, a private collection of “exotic wildlife.” Specializing in ruthless cryptid cage matches, safari-style creature hunts and living party favors, the Spectacle’s owner, Willem Vandekamp, caters to the forbidden fetishes of the wealthy and powerful. At the Spectacle, any wish can be granted—for the right price. But Vandekamp’s closely guarded client list isn’t the only secret being kept at the Spectacle. Beneath the beauty and brutality of life in the collection lie much darker truths, and no one is more determined than Delilah to strip the masks from the human monsters and drag all dark things into the light. “Oh what a disturbingly dark, and haunting world Rachel Vincent has crafted! Spectacle is definitely not for the fainthearted. However, it is the characters who are the heart and soul of Spectacle. The world they live in is harsh and brutal but it is the strength, love, and loyalty we see emerging out of the darkness that makes Spectacle so significant. I can’t wait to see what unfolds in the third book of the Menagerie series!” —Fresh Fiction “A bravura example of fantasy series-building.” —Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: The concept of «virtuality» has introduced a completely new mode of representing, presenting, as well as acquiring knowledge. The present collection of papers acknowledges this development and gives a survey over the most important developments, issues, and foundations from an interdisciplinary perspective. This book intends to enlarge the definition of virtual reality in order to go beyond the toy character it may still have in the public. The contributions show that virtuality has not only been successfully applied in various technical and medical domains but also touches basic philosophical problems and questions related to cognitive science. In fact, developing the concept of virtuality further will be the key to many challenges in both theoretical and technical domains.

Book Change Transformation and Development

Download or read book Change Transformation and Development written by International Schumpeter Society. Meeting and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a collection of papers all concerned with the exploration of economic and social dynamics in relation to the innovation process and its outcomes. This theme is firmly rooted in the Schumpeterian tradition in which an economic perspective is mutually embedded in a wider awareness of the role of other disciplines. Indeed since Schumpeter's time, the degree of specialisation within the social sciences has risen many fold, new sub disciplines continue to emerge, highly specialised theoretical tools and empirical methods continue to be developed, and new fields for the study of management and business overlap with the more traditional social sciences. There is, consequently, a need for connecting principles to offset the dangers of intellectual fragmentation. Evolutionary economics and evolutionary analysis more generally, certainly provide some of these connecting principles. The various contributions to this volume reflect upon this research programme in a number of ways.

Book Michael Jordan Inc

Download or read book Michael Jordan Inc written by David L. Andrews and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2001-08-09 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Jordan, Inc. seeks to make sense of a celebrated figure whose public existence illuminates a late capitalist order defined by the convergence of corporate and media interests. Using Michael Jordan as a vehicle for viewing the broader social, economic, political, and technological concerns that frame contemporary culture, the contributors focus on celebrity economy, corporate culture, identity politics, and the global marketplace—foundational pillars of contemporary cultural existence. They provide an introduction to late capitalism's pervasive and invasive cult of celebrity, examine the innovative corporate connections (particularly Jordan's association with Nike) largely responsible for Jordan's aggressively commodified being, excavate the cultural politics imbued within the racialized and sexualized nature of Jordan's identity, and demonstrate the global reach and influence that has accompanied the concerted commodification of Jordan by transnational corporations. This anthology represents both an intellectual expression of, and a political commitment to, the fact that Michael Jordan matters.

Book Waste Worlds

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jacob Doherty
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2021-12-14
  • ISBN : 0520380959
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Waste Worlds written by Jacob Doherty and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda's capital, Kampala, is undergoing dramatic urban transformations as its new technocratic government seeks to clean and green the city. Waste Worlds tracks the dynamics of development and disposability unfolding amid struggles over who and what belong in the new Kampala. Garbage materializes these struggles. In the densely inhabited social infrastructures in and around the city's waste streams, people, places, and things become disposable but conditions of disposability are also challenged and undone. Drawing on years of ethnographic research, Jacob Doherty illustrates how waste makes worlds, offering the key intervention that disposability is best understood not existentially, as a condition of social exclusion, but infrastructurally, as a form of injurious social inclusion.

Book The Spectacle of Disintegration

Download or read book The Spectacle of Disintegration written by McKenzie Wark and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following his acclaimed history of the Situationist International, The Beach Beneath the Street, McKenzie Wark continues the SI’s story, charting its post-sixties legacy and putting the late work of the Situationists in a broader, deeper context. He uncovers a contemporary relevance and searching critique of modernity. Wark builds on their work to map the historical stages of the society of the spectacle, from the diffuse to the integrated to what he calls the “disintegrating spectacle.” The Spectacle of Disintegration takes the reader through the critique of political aesthetics of former Situationist T.J. Clark, the Fourierist utopia of Raoul Vaneigem, René Viénet’s earthy situationist cinema, Gianfranco Sanguinetti’s pranking of the Italian ruling class, Alice Becker-Ho’s account of the anonymous language of the Romany, Guy Debord’s late films and his surprising work as a game designer. At once an extraordinary counter history of radical praxis and a call to action in the age of financial crisis and the resurgence of the streets, The Spectacle of Disintegration recalls the hidden journeys taken in the attempt to leave the twentieth century and plots an exit from the twenty-first. The dustjacket unfolds to reveal a fold-out poster of the collaborative graphic essay combining text selected by McKenzie Wark with composition and drawings by Kevin C. Pyle.

Book Monstrous Imaginaries

Download or read book Monstrous Imaginaries written by Maaheen Ahmed and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monsters seem inevitably linked to humans and not always as mere opposites. Maaheen Ahmed examines good monsters in comics to show how Romantic themes from the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries persist in today’s popular culture. Comics monsters, questioning the distinction between human and monster, self and other, are valuable conduits of Romantic inclinations. Engaging with Romanticism and the many monsters created by Romantic writers and artists such as Mary Shelley, Victor Hugo, and Goya, Ahmed maps the heritage, functions, and effects of monsters in contemporary comics and graphic novels. She highlights the persistence of recurrent Romantic features through monstrous protagonists in English- and French-language comics and draws out their implications. Aspects covered include the dark Romantic predilection for ruins and the sordid, the solitary protagonist and his quest, nostalgia, the prominence of the spectacle as well as excessive emotions, and above all, the monster’s ambiguity and rebelliousness. Ahmed highlights each Romantic theme through close readings of well-known but often overlooked comics, including Enki Bilal's Monstre tetralogy, Jim O'Barr's The Crow, and Emil Ferris’s My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, as well as the iconic comics series Alan Moore's Swamp Thing and Mike Mignola's Hellboy. In blurring the otherness of the monster, these protagonists retain the exaggeration and uncontrollability of all monsters while incorporating Romantic characteristics.
