Book The Syntax of Romanian

Download or read book The Syntax of Romanian written by Carmen Dobrovie-Sorin and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The architecture of the human language faculty has been one of the main foci of the linguistic research of the last half century. This branch of linguistics, broadly known as Generative Grammar, is concerned with the formulation of explanatory formal accounts of linguistic phenomena with the ulterior goal of gaining insight into the properties of the 'language organ'. The series comprises high quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues. The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to studies of the lexicon.

Book Experimental Insights into the Syntax of Romanian Ditransitives

Download or read book Experimental Insights into the Syntax of Romanian Ditransitives written by Alina Tigău and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the syntax of Romanian ditransitives building on new experimental data with a view to enable a more accurate understanding of these constructions regarding their underlying configuration(s), the structural import of Differential Object Marking or Clitic Doubling among others. One first attempt is to explain the (relatively) free word-order manifested by the two internal arguments, and their symmetrical potential for anaphor and possessor binding. Evidence is provided as to the relative hierarchical order of the two object DPs, with the direct object as the lower one. The featural make-up of the two objects also proves crucial in disentangling the various experimentally uncovered aspects regarding their interaction e.g., differentially marked direct objects bear a [Person] feature and compete with the indirect object in valuing the person feature of the applicative. The feature specification is further refined function of the presence of clitic doubling or the lack thereof. The experimental insights we gain into the syntax of Romanian ditransitives help us integrate them with their counterparts in Romance thereby contributing to a better cross-linguistic understanding of these constructions.

Book Advances in Roumanian Linguistics

Download or read book Advances in Roumanian Linguistics written by Guglielmo Cinque and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1995-04-13 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to collect and make available to the public recent studies on Roumanian in the framework of Generative Grammar. All the studies can be considered as highly advanced from both the empirical and the theoretical point of view. In fact, they deal with many of the phenomena that differentiate this language from other well-studied ones, adopting and further improving recent developments in linguistic theory. In this respect the book contributes both to Roumanian studies and to theoretical linguistics. These studies cover major areas of general syntactic investigation: the syntax of nominal expressions (Giusti on determiners, Grosu on free relative clauses), clausal structure (Motapanyane), clitic placement (Dobrovie-Sorin), and morpho-semantics (Farkaş and Zec). In so doing, they address the problems of the definition and refinement of the theory of functional projections, contributing new ideas and evidence for their formulation.

Book Comparative Studies in Romanian Syntax

Download or read book Comparative Studies in Romanian Syntax written by Virginia Motapanyane and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 58 of the North Holland Linguistic Series, edited by Virginia Motapanyane, provides an up-to-date overview of studies in Romanian syntax. Bringing together linguists working within the field of generative grammar, the volume's comparative approach demonstrates the relevance of Romanian data to grammatical theory. The editor's introductory chapter provides a valuable summary of developments in Romanian syntax and is the ideal preparation for the studies contained in this volume, both for Romance specialists and for those less familiar with the topic.

Book A Reference Grammar of Romanian

Download or read book A Reference Grammar of Romanian written by Carmen Dobrovie-Sorin and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 930 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on recent research in formal linguistics, this volume provides a thorough description of the whole system of Romanian Noun Phrases, understood in an extended sense, that is, in addition to nouns, pronouns and determiners, it examines all the adnominal phrases: genitive-marked DPs, adjectives, relative clauses, appositions, prepositional phrases, complement clauses and non-finite modifiers. The book focuses on syntax and the syntax-semantics interface but also includes a systematic morphological description of the language. The implicitly comparative description of Romanian contained in the book can serve as a starting point for the study of the syntax/semantics of Noun Phrases in other languages, regardless of whether or not they are typologically related to Romanian. This book will be of special interest to linguists working on Romanian, Romance languages, comparative linguistics and language typology, especially because Romanian is relevant for comparative linguistics not only as a Romance language, but also as part of the so-called Balkan Sprachbund.

Book Diachronic Variation in Romanian

Download or read book Diachronic Variation in Romanian written by Gabriela Pană Dindelegan and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the first work published in English dealing with the historical grammar of Romanian from a modern theoretical perspective. It consists of a selection of papers focusing on the historical grammar of Romanian, bringing together diverse theoretical approaches in order to address a number of key morphological and syntactic issues in the history of the morphosyntactic development of Romanian. The majority of papers in this volume deal with topics in Romanian historical syntax, drawing on modern research methods and current linguistic theory, with a clear preference for parametric syntax. The most significant areas of grammar, namely the nominal domain and the verbal domain, are well represented in this volume.

Book Formal Approaches to DPs in Old Romanian

Download or read book Formal Approaches to DPs in Old Romanian written by Virginia Hill and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formal approaches to DPs in Old Romanian offers the first collection of papers on this topic published in English. All the analyses adopt the conceptual tools of generative grammar to explain the syntactic peculiarities of Old Romanian nouns, synchronically and diachronically. Old Romanian noun syntax displays non-trivial peculiarities both in the internal structure of the DP (e.g., inflected possessive marker, polydefinite agreement, optional definite article on proper nouns) and in the way the DP is used in clause derivation (e.g., variable location of object pronouns, reanalysis of the relative item from phrasal to head). The analyses emphasize the relevance of the data for a finer-grained typology of Romance/Balkan languages as well as for the theory of grammar.

Book Word Order and Parameter Change in Romanian

Download or read book Word Order and Parameter Change in Romanian written by Alexandru Nicolae and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a comprehensive description and in-depth analysis of the major word order changes that took place in the clausal and the nominal domains in the transition from old to modern Romanian. The data are set in a comparative Romance perspective, with attention also paid to the impact of the Balkan Sprachbund and the influence of Old Church Slavonic. Alexandru Nicolae's analysis is based on a qualitative and quantitative examination of a large number of phenomena in a representative corpus of old Romanian texts. Some of these phenomena, such as scrambling, interpolation, discontinuous constituents, and variation in the position and linearization of DP-internal adjectival modifiers, are found across Romance, while others, such as the low position for pronominal cliticization, are relatively rare. Still others are specific to old and modern Romanian, such as the proclitic and enclitic realization of the same pronominal clitic, the low definite article, and the adjectival article construction. From an empirical perspective, the volume fills a gap in the Romance linguistics literature, as several of the phenomena it explores have been largely neglected to date. More broadly it offers a valuable contribution to research into word order typology and change, the nature and content of syntactic parameters, and the theory of grammaticalization and syntactic change.
