Book THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM DIRECTORS SELF REPORTED LEADERSHIP STYLE AND PROGRAM SUCCESS

Download or read book THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM DIRECTORS SELF REPORTED LEADERSHIP STYLE AND PROGRAM SUCCESS written by Elizabeth Joy Walters and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation explored the relationship between Athletic Training Program Directors' (ATPDs) self-reported leadership style and Athletic Training Program (ATP) success. The metrics of determinants of ATP success were derived from data that the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) annual report seeks from all ATPs for continuing accreditation. Forty-six ATPDs from CAATE-accredited Athletic Training Programs (ATPs) completed the survey. Most ATPDs from this sample came from undergraduate ATPs, with a few responsible for graduate degree programs, and even fewer responsible for undergraduate and graduate programs. All ATPD participants completed the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ; Avolio & Bass, 2004), demographic information, educational history-related questions, years of experience as an ATPD, and other leadership roles/experience. This study established that ATPDs' self-reported predominant leadership style is transformational in nature. This study demonstrated a statistically significant relationship when examining ATPDs' self-reported leadership style and ATP success within one of the four ATP success metrics examined: Percent ATS post-graduation employment. This study was not able to demonstrate a statistically significant relationship between ATPDs' self-reported leadership style and percent ATP retention, ATP percent first-time Board of Certification (BOC) pass rate, or percent ATP graduation rate. The lack of significance in three of the four variables likely is due to the small sample of participants. This study was underpowered. Furthermore, additional variables likely should be considered when determining the relationship between ATPD leadership style and ATP success.

Book A Comparative Analysis of Leadership Factors Impacting Athletic Training Education Program Directors and Clinical Education Coordinators

Download or read book A Comparative Analysis of Leadership Factors Impacting Athletic Training Education Program Directors and Clinical Education Coordinators written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Athletic Training specific research supports the need for athletic trainers to possess and utilize leadership knowledge, skills, and competencies. The expanding roles and responsibilities of Program Directors (PDs) and Clinical Education Coordinators (CECs) in colleges and universities has led to a multifaceted position that has increased in complexity and workload. The purpose of this study is to investigate leadership factors impacting program director and clinical education coordinator in athletic training education programs. Athletic Training PDs and CECs were asked to respond to questions related to demographics, motivations for taking on the role, professional identity, prior leadership training, time to competence, primary stressors of the role, and length of service/retention. A quantitative cross-sectional web-based survey was used to obtain the responses of PDs and CECs of CAATE accredited athletic training programs. An email request was sent to 807 individuals (391 PDs and 416 CECs) requesting they complete a Qualtrics survey. A total of 128 PDs (32.7%) and 181 CECs (43.5%) completed and returned the survey utilizing the survey link provided. Analyses used were chi -square, Wilcoxon-Mann Whitney, MANOVA and independent t-test . Findings indicated there is a statistically significant difference between athletic training program directors and clinical education coordinators in their motivation for taking on the role, professional identity, main stressors, and length of service. Results also indicated that PDs or CECs receive minimal leadership training to perform in their roles. Ideas for PD and CEC training are discussed as well as other implications, limitations and suggestions for future research."--Leaf 3.

Book NCAA Athletic Directors Self perspective of Transformational transactional Leadership

Download or read book NCAA Athletic Directors Self perspective of Transformational transactional Leadership written by Laurie Watlington Manning and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine NCAA athletic directors' (ADs') perceptions of their own leadership styles as they relate to the five dimensions of transformational leadership and the three dimensions of transactional leadership. The research instrument was the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) with added demographic questions. In addition to the determination of the self-perceived athletic director leadership style, the intention of this study was to determine the possible relationship of demographic and institutional variables including athletic director NCAA Division, age, and gender. Participants were the athletic directors from NCAA Division I, II, and III member higher education institutions. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-tests, and one-way ANOVAs to examine the research question. The results found significant differences among the institutional variable of NCAA Divisions. A one-way ANOVA demonstrated that transformational leadership traits of intellectual stimulation and inspirational motivation set Division I ADs apart from ADs within Divisions II and III. The findings of the study may have significance for intercollegiate ADs in offering an increase in the understanding of their own leadership style. Thus, the AD can move between both transformational and transactional leadership traits depending on a specific task. The findings of the study may also provide a benefit for college and university presidents by hiring and increasing retention of ADs through matching leadership style with the needs and mission of the intercollegiate athletic department.

Book Leadership Curricula of Professional Athletic Training Programs

Download or read book Leadership Curricula of Professional Athletic Training Programs written by Elizabeth A. Drake and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nationally-recognized athletic training organizations have identified leadership knowledge, skills, and competencies as essential for athletic trainers to be successful in the current healthcare environment and to help advance the profession of athletic training. However, little is currently known regarding the methods and the extent of leadership development in athletic training professional preparation programs. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine student and faculty perspectives of the extent and ways that athletic training professional preparation programs address leadership in their curricula. Data were obtained via surveys completed by 71 students and 83 athletic training professional level program directors. Overall, both groups of participants affirmed that it was important that leadership was addressed in athletic training professional programs. Several formal and informal uses of leadership development methods (e.g., peer-learning, professional organizational involvement, textbooks, and workshops) were examined. The many ways in which leadership was addressed within the respondents' athletic training programs suggests that the profession is comparable with other allied health professions when it comes to informal leadership education in both curricular and clinical portions of athletic training programs. Formal leadership training was reported to be at low levels by students and program directors, a deficit that is recommended to be addressed as more programs consider converting from a Bachelor's degree level to a Master's degree level professional program.
