Over the years, BL has seen almost irrepressible growth in popularity and since the 2000s has become a global media phenomenon, weaving its way into anime, prose fiction, live-action dramas, video games, audio dramas, and fan works. BL’s male–male romantic and sexual relationships have found a particularly receptive home in other parts of Asia, where strong local fan communities and locally produced BL works have garnered a following throughout the region, taking on new meanings and engendering widespread cultural effects. Queer Transfigurations is the first detailed examination of the BL media explosion across Asia. The book brings together twenty-one scholars exploring BL media, its fans, and its sociocultural impacts in a dozen countries in East, Southeast, and South Asia—and beyond. Book excerpt: In this investigation of three well-known motifs of Byzantine art the author establishes a relationship between changes of formal detail and varied contexts of meaning. Although the motifs studied occur throughout the thousand years of Byzantine history, they are seen not as static indicators of significance but as expressing changing aspects of meaning through modification of the details of form or composition. these changes of form are shown to be previously unconsidered aspects of iconography. Rather than investigating the classical or Early Christian origins of these motifs as is traditional in most scholarship, Dr. Cutler focuses on their adaptation to varying iconographical requirements and relates these changes to the shifting religious and political history of Byzantium. In illustrating this thesis, the author draws on a wide range of examples in mosaic, wall painting, manuscript illumination, and coins and controls his analysis by reference to Byzantine historical and theological literature. The result is a new understanding of major elements of Byzantine art and creativity and a method of approach widely applicable to other aspects of both Eastern and Western medieval iconography.

Book excerpt: Peter Anthony explores how visionary elements in Luke's Gospel had a particular influence on early interpretation of the Transfiguration, by examining the rich hermeneutical traditions that emerged - particularly in the Latin West - as the Transfiguration was first depicted visually in art. Anthony begins by comparing the visual and visionary culture of antiquity with that of the present, and their differing interpretations of the Transfiguration. He then examines the Transfiguration texts in the synoptic gospels and their interpretation in modern scholarship, and the reception of the Transfiguration in 2 Peter, the Apocalypse of Peter and the Acts of Peter, Tertullian and Origen. Proceeding to look at interpretations found in the Greek East and the Latin West, Anthony finally discusses the earliest visual depictions of the Transfiguration from the sixth century onward, drawn from a wealth of different art forms. Anthony concludes that early commentators' and artists' understanding of how we see and visualise, and therefore, how the Transfiguration was apprehended, is closer to that of the writers of the New Testament than many modern interpreters' is.
