Book Pain Treatment by Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation TENS

Download or read book Pain Treatment by Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation TENS written by David Ottoson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abundant evidence indicates that TENS can be used effectively to alleviate certain pain syndromes. For patients suffering from chronic musculo-skeletal pain in particular, TENS offers an alternative means of pain management. This book addresses the need among physiotherapists for a practical manual on the application of this relatively new technique. Numerous illustrations provide guidelines for the choice of stimulation parameters, the selection of electrode positions, as well as other aspects related to technique. A brief introduction to the neurophysiological mechanisms of pain and the pain-relieving effects of TENS is also given. These special features make this comprehensive presentation of particular interest to physiotherapists and clinicians actively engaged in the management of patients suffering from pain.

Book Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation TENS

Download or read book Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation TENS written by Mark I. Johnson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a technique that delivers mild electrical currents across the intact surface of the skin to reduce pain. TENS is used by practitioners throughout the world to manage painful conditions and TENS equipment can be purchased by the general public so that they can self-administer treatment. There are thousands of experimental and clinical research studies published on TENS and related techniques yet there is uncertainty about the best way to administer TENS in clinical practice. This is because currents used during TENS can be administered in a variety of ways and the findings of research studies have been inconclusive. This book provides guidance on how best to use TENS based on an evaluation of current research evidence. The book covers what TENS is, how it works, and safe and appropriate clinical techniques for many conditions including chronic low back pain, osteoarthritis and cancer pain. It also offers solutions to the problems faced by researchers when trying to design clinical trials on TENS. Accessibility written, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) provides a comprehensive coverage of research issues and findings about TENS and will be essential reading for healthcare professionals, practitioners and students.

The first ESWL treatment in the United States with the Dornier H~ device occurred at the Methodist Hospital of Indiana, and by the end of 1984, In spite of the rapidly the United StatesESWL study group had accrued over2,5()() ESWL treatments. accumulated experience at the six institutions involved in the FDA trial of the Dornier HM] device, other urologists in this country and around the world had little opportunity to gain knowledge about the utilization of this revolutionary technique. For this reason, the Methodist Hospital of Indiana organized the first symposium on shock wave lithotripsy in February of1985. Interest in this meeting was intense, as approval of the Dornier device had occurred only a few weeks earlier in December of 1984. Because of the success of this initial meeting, subsequent meetings have been held annually in Indianapolis. Following the third annual symposium on extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in March of 1987, a number of participants and attendees requested that the information presented at the meeting be made available. Therefore, plans were made to publish the proceedings of the next meeting which occurred March 5 and 6, 1988. The Methodist Hospi tal ofIndiana' s 4th Symposium on Shock Wave Lithotripsy: State of the Art was the best attended meeting to date with over 650 registrants from 36 states and 24 countries.
