This paper introduces the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, called TTIP. TTIP is a trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, which is currently being negotiated. The aim of this convention is to open up the markets on both sides. This includes eliminating tariffs and other trade barriers between the two unions, the United States and the European Union. Furthermore, restrictions for commercial services shall also be reduced, security of investment and the competitive equality shall be improved, and not least the access to public contracts shall be simplified at all levels of government. Therefore, the TTIP is a unique joint project which can obtain considerable growth and em-ployment effects (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Umwelt 2015). However, there is a lot of criticism and concerns regarding foreign trade between the European Union and the United States, but there are a lot of advantages for both countries as well. Some of the topics are highly controversial mainly due to differing standards and norms of both partners (Beck & Ohr 2014).

Book excerpt: On 25 July 2013, the Minister for Foreign Trade, Nicole Bricq, asked the French Digital Council to submit its recommendations on the digital part of the planned Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) currently under negotiation between the European Union and the United States. The working group, directed by Benoît THIEULIN, therefore held a series of hearings with stakeholders in the negotiations, including French and American companies, civil society organisations, professional organisations and administrations. In March 2014, its 30 members unanimously voted an opinion. The report, named “Strengthening EU’s negotiation strategy to make TTIP a sustainable blueprint for the digital economy and society”, is composed of the voted opinion and several recommendations on specific issues that might be discussed during the TTIP negotiations. The Council considers that : European Union values are vital levers for building a negotiating strategy on chapters that include digital issues;Europe’s digital market structure must be based on lasting safeguards: the right to regulate, the ability to regulate in the future, and respect for the European Union’s sovereignty and freedom of competition are among their number. They must be used in negotiating the digital chapter of the proposed partnership;The European Union is in a position to add to the opening-up and extension of its digital market by developing trade relations with new partners such as countries in Asia and Africa;With a market of 500 million consumers, mobilisation of both public and private stakeholders is a priority: putting together a digital strategy and strengthening alliances between Member States are both positive levers for successful trade negotiation.

In addition, there are other political uncertainties. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, 70.8 million people are displaced due to the war. This migration crisis is an issue that the EU and the US, especially, have to deal with. Furthermore, the global Covid-19 pandemic has been on the agenda since 2020. Accordingly, both military and health risks exist. This chapter focuses on the transatlantic trade and investment partnership "TTIP" and its impact on security. The TTIP negotiations between the EU and the USA reached a standstill at the end of 2016. Despite the possibility that the treaty would enable the two powerful economic nations to develop further and strengthen their ties. Furthermore, the agreement aimed to create up to 13 million new jobs. Nevertheless, the TTIP negotiations are gaining traction due to global circumstances. As already explained, many skeptics, such as charities, environmentalists, and NGOs, for instance, strongly criticize the agreement. There have also been some large-scale demonstrations in European countries. Nevertheless, TTIP also has benefits, especially concerning the economy.
