Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How damaging is acid rain? Current opinions differ widely, in part because for every proposed link between acid rain and adverse environmental effects an alternative explanation based on other phenomena can be or has been proposed, and in many cases cannot be readily dismissed. The specific areas addressed in this volume include the emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides, precipitation chemistry, atmospheric sulfates and visibility, surface water chemistry, sediment chemistry and abundance of diatom taxa, fish populations, and forest productivity. The book then draws conclusions about the acid deposition-phenomenon relationship, identifying phenomena which are directly acid deposition-caused and suggesting others apparently caused by human activities unrelated to acid deposition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the 1980's, research has continued to clarify and improve our understanding of the problern of the ecological impact of acidic precipitation. From September 15-20, 1985, Canada convened the the Muskoka Symposium on Acidic Precipitation to review progress and help chart the direction of future studies. The Conference was held in central Ontario, Canada, a region of heavy sulphate deposition where aquatic effects are evident. Approximately 700 people attended, over 500 of whom were research scientists. Over 400 papers were presented. Nearly 200 of the papers are included in these proceedings, which tagether give the present state of the art of acid rain research. The Conference focused on atmospheric science and aquatic and terrestrial effects. I have made some general observations on progress in clarifying issues and linkages between these areas of research. Out standing issues which require a great deal more work are identified. These are my views, influenced by personal bias and limited by my expertise. Atmospheric Seiences Three aspects were covered: measurement techniques, the actual measure ments, and source-receptor relationships.

Book History Change and Sustainability

Download or read book History Change and Sustainability written by Detlev Möller and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is a major challenge facing modern society. The chemistry of air and its influence on the climate system forms the main focus of this book. Vol. 2 of Chemistry of the Climate System takes a problem-based approach to presenting global atmospheric processes, evaluating the effects of changing air compositions as well as possibilities for interference with these processes through the use of chemistry.

Book Topics in Micrometeorology A Festschrift for Arch Dyer

Download or read book Topics in Micrometeorology A Festschrift for Arch Dyer written by B.B. Hicks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the micrometeorological literature, reference is sometimes made to the 'Businger-Dyer Profiles' or the 'Dyer-Businger profiles/relations' without referring to the origin of these relations. For example, in the textbook on 'Atmospheric Turbulence' by Panofsky and Dutton (1984) on p. 134, reference is made to the 'Businger-Dyer formula'. To add to the mystery, these authors refer on p. 141 to the Businger-Dyer-Pandolfo empirical result (Businger, 1966; Pandolfo, 1966) that in unstable air • Z r (1) Ri=-== ... L So it seemed to me that it would be appropriate for this issue of Boundary-Layer Meteorology which is dedicated to Arch Dyer, to go back to 1965 and describe the circumstances that led to the above mentioned profiles as I remember them. 2. Aspendale, 1965 In the academic year 1965-1966 I found myself in Australia on a sabbatical leave. The first part of this leave was spent at the CSIRO Division of Meteorological Physics in Aspendale, Victoria. It was in many ways a good choice. The fall is exchanged for spring, SE Australia is a pleasant place to be in spring and summer, and the scientists in the division were hospitable and stimulating. Priestley, Swinbank, Dyer, Webb, McIlroy, Taylor, Clarke, Deacon and several others carried out an active research program.
