The ultimate constituents of the teeth, in respect to organism, were unknown to antiquity and even to the middle ages, although Galen and Fox speak of the homogeneous and heterogeneous parts of the body, yet the minuter structures were veiled from them as well as others of their time. But each succeeding decade, since the application of the simple microscope to medicine, by Marcello Malpighi, (born 1628, died 1694, ) has, by its scientific workers, delved into the labyrinths of Nature's hidden mysteries, and converted theory into fact, until in the researches of Hassall, of 1851, Kolliker, of 1854, and Beale, of 1878, we have inherited volumes of priceless n.atter, as a result of microscopical investigations, and yet the goal is not reached, for much remains to be demonstrated, even of odontology. It is not my purpose, in this dissertation, to give all the developmental steps of the tooth's formation, but will begin with the observation that its true blastema is the bioplasm, or living, germinal matter of the blood. The corpuscles, in their protein organism, having served their important function of conveying oxygen from the lungs and returning carbon from the capillaries, suffer dissolution and by their disintegration increase the quantity of fluid fibrin in the blood, which, being by exosmosis exhaled, become the true bioplasm of the fabric: Not that fibrin is germinal matter or bioplasm but of the living germinal matter of the body, fibrin is the main constituent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Partial Transactions of the Northern Ohio Dental Association, 1857-1906 The great historian Macaulay said: "Sit at the feet of history, and through the night of years the steps of virtue she shall trace." We have been sitting at her feet, and tracing her steps in the interest of this association, and have concluded that there is no single chapter in the book of dentistry that is so interesting as the one on history. The writer has been trying to fulfill the wish of this association as expressed in a resolution passed in June 1905, appointing him a committee of one to compile its history. This was not an easy task, especially for the first fifteen years, because whatever records the association may have possessed entirely disappeared, and have not been located, notwithstanding at several times a committee was appointed to search for them, and also compile a history by obtaining information from any available source. Whatever we have learned has been from personal interviews, correspondence, research in journals and libraries. The formation of a society in this part of Ohio, came about, viz: The American Dental Convention in >855 passed a resolution recommending the organization of local societies, so W. H. Atkinson, J. A. Robinson, and others in Cleveland talked the matter over and concluded to issue a circular to the dentists of Northern Ohio, inviting them to meet in Tremont Hall, Nov. 3, 1857, and that was the time and place of the first meeting, and they have been held annually at different cities and towns almost without a lapse. On that memorable day in 1857, Geo. Watt appeared at Tremont Hall and helped organize the meeting, and made a report of the proceedings for the Dental Register of the West, of which he and J. Taft were editors. He came again at subsequent times and made reports for the same journal. We should honor his memory, because he did for us what nobody else did: he printed our early proceedings, and from the writers research he has no knowledge of anywhere else they can be found. Of the thirty-five dentists who were present at that epoch in the dental history of Ohio, only four are living, viz: Alfred Terry, Chester H. Harroun, Jere E. Robinson. W. P. Horton. In many respects this history is exact, while in others it may be lacking, owing to lapse of time and data. Your historian has done the best he could since June 1905, and his recompense has been the pleasure he has received from doing this kind of work, and his love for this Association and the profession.
