This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transaction of the Royal Historical Society, Vol. 10 One result of the war has been to turn our attention from domestic to foreign affairs. For a long time the British electorate had been so wrapped up in our own constitutional struggles that it was almost completely blind and deaf to other issues. It has been brought back to the affairs of Europe as it were by an earthquake. People who never thought seriously about the relations of England and the Continent, and were content to leave foreign policy to our Foreign Secretaries, begin to form opinions of their own, and will in due season express them at the poll. A new period of our history has begun in which a democracy, hitherto indifferent to external problems and exceptionally ignorant about them, will demand information about these problems, and cannot, without great peril to national interests, be left as uninformed as it is. Download or read book Transactions of the Royal Historical Society Vol 16 written by Great Britain Royal Historical Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Royal Historical Society, Vol. 16: New Series In casting about for a subject on which to address you today I came to the conclusion that to speak on some abstract question connected with the study of history would at best be but a feeble repetition of What has been said before by my predecessors here, by professors in their inaugural lectures, and by many others in speech or in writing. Before an audience of this kind I need not defend the interest or the utility of our favourite study. You would hardly be here if you did not believe the study Of history to be useful, and if you did not generally find it interesting. I need not dwell on the fact that history is the mother, in more senses than one, of politics; and that, whatever else we should know as citizens, politicians, or administrators, we ought at least to know something Of the history Of our own country - how it came to be made - through what Changes it has recently passed - what have been its relations to other States down to our own day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Royal Historical Society, 1886, Vol. 3 MY historical investigations for some years have particularly borne upon the relations of America to the Old World. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Royal Historical Society, Vol. 8 In the old days when the Germanic Diet still sat at Frankfort, a statesman, who then represented the power which was destined to sweep into nothingness that famous institution, told me that he always had a Tacitus by his bedside. 'Then, ' I replied, 'you hardly agree with your distinguished countryman who called Tacitus a disappointed courtier.' 'If, ' he rejoined, 'there were many courtiers like Tacitus, I should take care to frequent courts.' That story came back to me last year when I was writing the address which I had the honour of delivering to you on the uses of Thucydides to the modem statesman, and I am not sure that I can do better than to try to answer this afternoon, with regard to the most interesting of Latin historians, the same question which I tried to answer last February with regard to the great Athenian. On this occasion also I wish to narrow as much as possible the field of inquiry. I do not propose to enter at all into the question, so much discussed in recent years, of the trustworthiness of Tacitus as an historian. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Royal Historical Society, Vol. 1 History and Geography, if we would study either thoroughly and intelligently, can never be completely dissevered. The continual influence exercised, from generation to generation, by climate, food, and necessary pursuits upon a people, com bined with the influences of the political geography Of the surrounding countries, the presence of strong or weak, civilised or barbarous neighbours, all these exercise the strongest pres sure upon the original character, and mould the course Of the history of every nation. And, therefore, to appreciate the full meaning of that history, a study of the theatre in which the action was played is of importance.
