Book excerpt: The term "diaspora", from the Greek word διασπείρω (diaspeiró), meaning "to scatter abroad", by definition refers to the movement, migration, or scattering of a people away from an established or ancestral homeland. However, when it comes to the history of the Jews, this term transcends the primary, surface-level meaning and becomes a concept; the culmination of the movement, migration, and scattering of the children of Israel didn't conclude with assimilation into the cultures in which they found themselves.
