Book excerpt: Different subjects appear in different windows, waves of light pass through each window uniquely and only once per instant of time. Different impressions in light pass through or reflect off the surface of each windows. There are different expressions on people's faces, different gestures or reactions to the fact that they are being photographed, if they are in fact aware that they are being photographed, and different aspects of their awareness. Some subjects appear to be consciously turning away from the camera, others appear completely unaware of the camera's presence, others stare back through the graffitied windows, and others still into the black void of the lens. All subjects whether conscious of it or not, whether consenting or not are providing an impression composed in reflected light, of being, in that instant.

Book excerpt: In his semiautobiographical novel, Cyclops, Croatian writer Ranko Marinkovic recounts the adventures of young theater critic Melkior Tresic, an archetypal antihero who decides to starve himself to avoid fighting in the front lines of World War II. As he wanders the streets of Zagreb in a near-hallucinatory state of paranoia and malnourishment, Melkior encounters a colorful circus of characters—fortune-tellers, shamans, actors, prostitutes, bohemians, and café intellectuals—all living in a fragile dream of a society about to be changed forever. A seminal work of postwar Eastern European literature, Cyclops reveals a little-known perspective on World War II from within the former Yugoslavia, one that has never before been available to an English-speaking audience. Vlada Stojiljkovic's able translation, improved by Ellen Elias-Bursac's insightful editing, preserves the striking brilliance of this riotously funny and densely allusive text. Along Melkior’s journey Cyclops satirizes both the delusions of the righteous military officials who feed the national bloodlust as well as the wayward intellectuals who believe themselves to be above the unpleasant realities of international conflict. Through Stojiljkovic's clear-eyed translation, Melkior’s peregrinations reveal how history happens and how the individual consciousness is swept up in the tide of political events, and this is accomplished in a mode that will resonate with readers of Charles Simic, Aleksandr Hemon, and Kundera.

Book excerpt: In this luminous novel -- winner of Britain's prestigious Booker Prize -- John Berger relates the story of "G.," a young man forging an energetic sexual career in Europe during the early years of this century. With profound compassion, Berger explores the hearts and minds of both men and women, and what happens during sex, to reveal the conditions of the Don Juan's success: his essential loneliness, the quiet cumulation in each of his sexual experiences of all of those that precede it, the tenderness that infuses even the briefest of his encounters, and the way women experience their own extraordinariness through their moments with him. All of this Berger sets against the turbulent backdrop of Garibaldi and the failed revolution of Milanese workers in 1898, the Boer War, and the first flight across the Alps, making G. a brilliant novel about the search for intimacy in history's private moments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at the South London light rail tram system, from the author of Britain’s Last Mechanical Signalling. Croydon Tramlink is a new history about the network linking Wimbledon with Croydon in South London. This is the first full history of this fascinating tramway, which is about to celebrate its twentieth anniversary of opening. The book looks at the political, economic, and social aspects of the network, as well as the mechanical history of the system. The tramway has been an important aspect in rejuvenating the Croydon area and improving transport links in an area lacking underground lines. Praise for Croydon Tramlink “In the very readable narrative we learn of the careful behind the scenes work undertaken to gain the support of the principal local authority and BR, and the lengthy process of gaining parliamentary approval and securing the necessary capital funding. We also hear of the obstructive tactics of the bus lobby which prevented construction of a more passenger-friendly interchange at New Addington, surely an indictment of public transport policy and planning at the time. The book is liberally illustrated with color images, many showing the original red and white and current blue, green and white liveries worn by the light rail vehicles.” —West Somerset Railway Association

Book Narratives of Place in Literature and Film

Download or read book Narratives of Place in Literature and Film written by Steven Allen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratives of place link people and geographic location with a cultural imaginary through literature and visual narration. Contemporary literature and film often frame narratives with specific geographic locations, which saturate the narrative with cultural meanings in relation to natural and man-made landscapes. This interdisciplinary collection seeks to interrogate such connections to probe how place is narrativized in literature and film. Utilizing close readings of specific filmic and literary texts, all chapters serve to tease out cultural and historical meanings in respect of human engagement with landscapes. Always mindful of national, cultural and topographical specificity, the book is structured around five core themes: Contested Histories of Place; Environmental Landscapes; Cityscapes; The Social Construction of Place; and Landscapes of Belonging.
