Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trajectories of American Hunting Rifles: A Series of Tests, Made by the "Forest and Stream," at the Creedmoor Range, Sept; 26 Oct; 19, 1885 The general plan was a very simple one. It was first to call in a competent surveyor and have a range laid out, then to place the actual manipulation of the trials in the hands of an expert who should make a report of the actual figures obtained by him. In this way we hoped to put the result obtained beyond all question of doubt or uncertainty. The details of the trial were many and required much time and labor. We invited suggestions as to the carrying out of the tests, and the vast correspondence which at once Sprung up showed how much interest was felt in the work. Some of these letters, as far as space permitted, were spread before our readers, but many more were not put in type. Some of the hints given were valuable, others were evidently given under a misapprehension as to what a trajectory test really was and what it was that we were striving to discover. Book Firearms in American History

Download or read book Firearms in American History written by Charles Winthrop Sawyer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Firearms in American History: 1600 to 1800 The Colonists in America were the greatest weapon-using people of that epoch in the world. Everywhere the gun was more abundant than the tool. It furnished daily food; it maintained its owners claims to the possession of his homestead among the aboriginal owners of the soil; it helped to win the mother country's wars for possession of the country as a whole. These facts alone raise the interesting questions of what the Colonists used for weapons and where they got them. Further, the ultimate outcome of all strife between the Colonists and other people was victory for the Colonists. While the Colonists may have been excellent fighters, operating in the main upon home ground, and while their wars with other white people were side issues of European wars and to a considerable extent dependent upon the outcome there, it is nevertheless a fact that a war is composed of two factors, only one of which is the combatants themselves. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, up-to-the-minute account of bridge management developments for researchers, designers, builders, administrators, and owners Bridge Management draws on Bojidar Yanev's thirty years of research, teaching, and consulting as well as his management of 800 of New York City's 2,200 bridges. It offers an insider's view of the problems to be resolved in bridge management by civil and transportation engineers, budget and asset managers, abstract analysts, and hands-on field workers. It features: A review of current bridge management vulnerabilities, objectives, tools, and products Dozens of case studies illustrating the application of analytic models, and practical developments currently shaping the field Unique chapters exploring the evolution of bridge design, construction, and maintenance, from the origins of deliberate planning to the current integrated lifecycle asset management models
