Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most authoritative resource on religious trends in America—now fully updated Most Americans say they believe in God, and more than a third say they attend religious services every week. Yet studies show that people do not really go to church as often as they claim, and it is not always clear what they mean when they tell pollsters they believe in God or pray. American Religion presents the best and most up-to-date information about religious trends in the United States, in a succinct and accessible manner. This sourcebook provides essential information about key developments in American religion since 1972, and is the first major resource of its kind to appear in more than two decades. Mark Chaves looks at trends in diversity, belief, involvement, congregational life, leadership, liberal Protestant decline, and polarization. He draws on two important surveys: the General Social Survey, an ongoing survey of Americans' changing attitudes and behaviors, begun in 1972; and the National Congregations Study, a survey of American religious congregations across the religious spectrum. Chaves finds that American religious life has seen much continuity in recent decades, but also much change. He challenges the popular notion that religion is witnessing a resurgence in the United States—in fact, traditional belief and practice is either stable or declining. Chaves examines why the decline in liberal Protestant denominations has been accompanied by the spread of liberal Protestant attitudes about religious and social tolerance, how confidence in religious institutions has declined more than confidence in secular institutions, and a host of other crucial trends. Now with updated data and a new preface by the author, this revised edition provides essential information about key developments in American religion since 1972, plainly showing that religiosity is declining in America.

Book A History of Mathematical Statistics from 1750 to 1930

Download or read book A History of Mathematical Statistics from 1750 to 1930 written by Anders Hald and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1998-04-22 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited second volume of Anders Hald's history of the development of mathematical statistics. Anders Hald's A History of Probability and Statistics and Their Applications before 1750 is already considered a classic by many mathematicians and historians. This new volume picks up where its predecessor left off, describing the contemporaneous development and interaction of four topics: direct probability theory and sampling distributions; inverse probability by Bayes and Laplace; the method of least squares and the central limit theorem; and selected topics in estimation theory after 1830. In this rich and detailed work, Hald carefully traces the history of parametric statistical inference, the development of the corresponding mathematical methods, and some typical applications. Not surprisingly, the ideas, concepts, methods, and results of Laplace, Gauss, and Fisher dominate his account. In particular, Hald analyzes the work and interactions of Laplace and Gauss and describes their contributions to modern theory. Hald also offers a great deal of new material on the history of the period and enhances our understanding of both the controversies and continuities that developed between the different schools. To enable readers to compare the contributions of various historical figures, Professor Hald has rewritten the original papers in a uniform modern terminology and notation, while leaving the ideas unchanged. Statisticians, probabilists, actuaries, mathematicians, historians of science, and advanced students will find absorbing reading in the author's insightful description of important problems and how they gradually moved toward solution.

Book David Hilbert and the Axiomatization of Physics 1898 1918

Download or read book David Hilbert and the Axiomatization of Physics 1898 1918 written by L. Corry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Hilbert (1862-1943) was the most influential mathematician of the early twentieth century and, together with Henri Poincaré, the last mathematical universalist. His main known areas of research and influence were in pure mathematics (algebra, number theory, geometry, integral equations and analysis, logic and foundations), but he was also known to have some interest in physical topics. The latter, however, was traditionally conceived as comprising only sporadic incursions into a scientific domain which was essentially foreign to his mainstream of activity and in which he only made scattered, if important, contributions. Based on an extensive use of mainly unpublished archival sources, the present book presents a totally fresh and comprehensive picture of Hilbert’s intense, original, well-informed, and highly influential involvement with physics, that spanned his entire career and that constituted a truly main focus of interest in his scientific horizon. His program for axiomatizing physical theories provides the connecting link with his research in more purely mathematical fields, especially geometry, and a unifying point of view from which to understand his physical activities in general. In particular, the now famous dialogue and interaction between Hilbert and Einstein, leading to the formulation in 1915 of the generally covariant field-equations of gravitation, is adequately explored here within the natural context of Hilbert’s overall scientific world-view. This book will be of interest to historians of physics and of mathematics, to historically-minded physicists and mathematicians, and to philosophers of science.

Book Congregations in America

  • Author : Mark Chaves

Download or read book Congregations in America written by Mark Chaves and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More Americans belong to religious congregations than to any other kind of voluntary association. What these vast numbers amount to--what people are doing in the over 300,000 churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples in the United States--is a question that resonates through every quarter of American society, particularly in these times of "faith-based initiatives," "moral majorities," and militant fundamentalism. And it is a question answered in depth and in detail in Congregations in America. Drawing on the 1998 National Congregations Study--the first systematic study of its kind--as well as a broad range of quantitative, qualitative, and historical evidence, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the most significant form of collective religious expression in American society: local congregations. Among its more surprising findings, Congregations in America reveals that, despite the media focus on the political and social activities of religious groups, the arts are actually far more central to the workings of congregations. Here we see how, far from emphasizing the pursuit of charity or justice through social services or politics, congregations mainly traffic in ritual, knowledge, and beauty through the cultural activities of worship, religious education, and the arts. Along with clarifying--and debunking--arguments on both sides of the debate over faith-based initiatives, the information presented here comprises a unique and invaluable resource, answering previously unanswerable questions about the size, nature, make-up, finances, activities, and proclivities of these organizations at the very center of American life.

Book Mathematicians at war

Download or read book Mathematicians at war written by Laurent Mazliak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous scientists have taken part in the war effort during World War I, but few gave it the passionate energy of the prominent Italian mathematician Volterra. As a convinced supporter of the cause of Britain and France, he struggled vigorously to carry Italy into the war in May 1915 and then developed a frenetic activity to support the war effort, going himself to the front, even though he was 55. This activity found an adequate echo with his French colleagues Borel, Hadamard and Picard. The huge correspondence they exchanged during the war, gives an extraordinary view of these activities, and raises numerous fundamental questions about the role of a scientist, and particularly a mathematician during WW I. It also offers a vivid documentation about the intellectual life of the time ; Volterra’s and Borel’s circles in particular were extremely wide and the range of their interests was not limited to their field of specialization. The book proposes the complete transcription of the aforementioned correspondence, annotated with numerous footnotes to give details on the contents. It also offers a general historical introduction to the context of the letters and several complements on themes related to the academic exchanges between France and Italy during the war.

Book Interpreting Probability

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Howie
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2002-08-08
  • ISBN : 1139434373
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Interpreting Probability written by David Howie and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term probability can be used in two main senses. In the frequency interpretation it is a limiting ratio in a sequence of repeatable events. In the Bayesian view, probability is a mental construct representing uncertainty. This 2002 book is about these two types of probability and investigates how, despite being adopted by scientists and statisticians in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Bayesianism was discredited as a theory of scientific inference during the 1920s and 1930s. Through the examination of a dispute between two British scientists, the author argues that a choice between the two interpretations is not forced by pure logic or the mathematics of the situation, but depends on the experiences and aims of the individuals involved. The book should be of interest to students and scientists interested in statistics and probability theories and to general readers with an interest in the history, sociology and philosophy of science.
