Book Relax It s Just God

Download or read book Relax It s Just God written by Wendy Thomas Russell and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gold-medal winner of a Next Generation Book Award, silver-medal winner of the Independent Publishers Book Award. As featured on the PBS NewsHour “A gem of a book.” — LIBRARY JOURNAL (STARRED REVIEW) A step-by-step guide to raising confident, open-minded kids in an age of religious intolerance. Relax, It's Just God offers parents fresh, practical and honest ways to address issues of God and faith with children while promoting curiosity and kindness, and successfully fending off indoctrination. A rapidly growing demographic cohort in America, secular parents are at the forefront of a major and unprecedented cultural shift. Unable to fall back on what they were taught as children, many of these parents are struggling, or simply failing, to address issues of God, religion and faith with their children in ways that promote honesty, curiosity, kindness and independence. The author sifts through hard data, including the results of a survey of 1,000 nonreligious parents, and delivers gentle but straightforward advice to both non-believers and open-minded believers. With a thoughtful voice infused with humor, Russell seamlessly merges scientific thought, scholarly research and everyday experience with respect for a full range of ways to view the world. "Relax, It's Just God" goes beyond the numbers to assist parents (and grandparents) who may be struggling to find the right time place, tone and language with which to talk about God, spirituality and organized religion. It encourages parents to promote religious literacy and understanding and to support kids as they explore religion on their own -- ensuring that each child makes up his or her own mind about what to believe (or not believe) and extends love and respect to those who may not agree with them. Subjects covered include: • Talking openly about our beliefs without indoctrinating kids • Making religious literacy fun and engaging • Talking about death without the comforts of heaven • Navigating religious differences with extended family members • What to do when kids get threatened with hell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book for parents which deals with principles rather than with problems or cases. It aims to help parents to think for themselves and does not undertake to present ready-made formulas for the training of children or prescriptions for use in various emergencies. It is not mere theory, however; most of its materials lie within the author's experience as parent and as teacher. - Preface.

Book excerpt: A series of thirty articles on the nature and scope and methods of the wise training of children. This work is the ripest result of the lifetime study and experience of a Christian educator in the sphere of the home training of children. Every precept in its pages has been tested by the principles of Christian philosophy and by actual experiment in more than one generation of little ones. "This is next to the Bible decidedly the best book for parents ever published. It is worth its weight in gold to those who have the responsibility of training children....The greatest element of danger today in this country of ours is the lack of home training. Dr. Trumball has written many good books, but this is better than all the rest for the good it will do." -The North-western Monthly "It would be an unspeakable advantage to every parent to read this book. Its thirty chapters are full of condensed, practical Christian hints to those to whom God has entrusted the training of immortal souls for Himself. Its reading might change many of their views, help them to better habits, and suggest many ways in which they could influence their children's minds for good. How beautiful households would be, molded after the fashion outlined in this book." -The Treasury; a Magazine of Religious and Current Thought "Parents and others having the training of children would be all the better, whatever their experience, if they were to give it a careful perusal." -Glasgow Herald "We wish every parent could read a chapter headed 'Will-training, rather than Will-breaking.' and another on the duty not only of setting an example, but of training children so that special characteristics shall be modified or strengthened as circumstances require. This book is full of happy suggestions as to home atmosphere, interest in the children's pleasures and troubles, and, the evil of punishments inflicted just before bedtime....This admirable little work is 'the outcome of experiment and observation as a father and grandfather,' and may be usefully introduced to the notice of parents who are only in the theoretical stage of education....We wish it a large circulation and careful reading." -The Literary World "Eminently practical. He tells what training is, the duty of training; its scope shows that the training of the will is not will braking, and so on....The work is heartily commended." -Young Men CONTENTS. I. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new examination of how and why American religious parents seek to pass on religion to their children The most important influence shaping the religious and spiritual lives of children, youth, and teenagers is their parents. A myriad of studies show that the parents of American youth play the leading role in shaping the character of their religious and spiritual lives, even well after they leave home and often for the rest of their lives. We know a lot about the importance of parents in faith transmission. However we know much less about the actual beliefs, feelings, and activities of the parents themselves, what Christian Smith and Amy Adamczyk call the "intergenerational transmission of religious faith and practice." To address that gap, this book reports the findings of a new national study of religious parents in the United States. The findings and conclusions in Handing Down the Faith are based on 215 in-depth, personal interviews with religious parents from many traditions and different parts of the country, and sophisticated analyses of two nationally representative surveys of American parents about their religious parenting. Handing Down the Faith explores the background beliefs informing how and why religious parents seek to pass on religion to their children; examines how parenting styles interact with parent religiousness to shape effective religious transmission; shows how parents have been influenced by their experiences as children influenced by their own parents; reveals how religious parents view their congregations and what they most seek out in a local church, synagogue, temple, or mosque; explores the experiences and outlooks of immigrant parents including Latino Catholics, East Asian Buddhists, South Asian Muslims, and Indian Hindus. Smith and Adamczyk step back to consider how American religion has transformed over the last 100 years and to explain why parents today shoulder such a huge responsibility in transmitting religious faith and practice to their children. The book is rich in empirical evidence and unique in many of the topics it explores and explains, providing a variety of sometimes counterintuitive findings that will interest scholars of religion, social scientists interested in the family, parenting, and socialization; clergy and religious educators and leaders; and religious parents themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of Children in Religion Sometimes when a child thus nurtured grows into youth and comes at last into his inevitable independence, and his own true will appears, his parents are much surprised. Thus and thus he did when he could not help himself, but now he is revealed. The father and mother cannot understand how their son who was such a quiet and gentle lad at home, and whose marks for conduct were so good in the private school, can be have at college as if he had a devil. They are rather inclined to lay the blame upon the devil. But the probable reason for the difference is in the fact that the boy had only a dependent goodness. The obedi ence which he showed was Of their impos ing, not of his own choosing. They con trolled him, but they did not educate him. They did not bring him up so that be freely and naturally and gladly preferred the good. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Readiness for Religion

Download or read book Readiness for Religion written by Ronald Goldman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, first published in 1965, the author explores the implications of research for an alternative approach to religious education. The book deals with the psychological bases of religious development, reviewing the natural limitations as well as the basic needs of the young, and how religious education should be affected by educational theory and practice. The author also examines what content and methods of teaching are consistent with the healthy development of children and adolescents. Teachers in schools, students in training, lecturers, clergy and ministers, and local education authority committees will welcome the book as an important aid to the task of rethinking syllabuses and the need for more child-centred methods of teaching.
