Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training in Night Movements: Based on Actual Experience in War; Translated From the Japanese The importance of night movements and night attacks in the military operations of the present day is so generally recognized, that any discussion on that point would be more than superfluous. That the Japanese army, from the standpoint of practical experience, is best qualified to discuss such operations, would seem to follow as a matter also beyond discussion. For this reason it occurred to me that the translation of this work of a Japanese officer who was a company commander during the Japanese-Russian War, might, and I venture to say, does contain much that will be of interest and profit to our own service. Night movements are admittedly among the most difficult operations of war; the margin between victory and defeat is so small that it is a difficult matter to say to just what comparatively trivial reason success or failure may be due. Such being the case, it naturally follows that minute and painstaking training is absolutely necessary if success can be even hoped for. While trying to solve one of Florida’s most profound mysteries, Doc Ford is the target of a murder attempt by someone who wants to make it look like an accident. Or is the target actually his friend Tomlinson? Whatever the answer, the liveaboards and fishing guides at Dinkin’s Bay on Sanibel Island are becoming increasingly nervous—and wary—after a plane crash and other near-death incidents make it apparent that Ford and Tomlinson are dangerous companions. What their small family of friends doesn’t know is that their secret pasts make it impossible for them to seek help from the law. There is an assassin on the loose, and it is up to Doc and Tomlinson to find a killer before the grisly job is done.

Book excerpt: Anything can happen under the cover of darkness. Kell Roberts has walked the thin line between life and death for so long that it now feels like home. He is a soldier, a survivor, and a loner. Still, Kell cannot turn his back on the beautiful woman caught in his firefight against the drug lords of Mexico. She says her name is Teddie, but Kell senses there’s much more to her story—and it’s about to pull him into a mission he didn’t sign on for: keeping her alive. Teddie knows this lean, mean rescuer just saved her life, but the steel glint behind those soft gray eyes seem to be hiding something deep. The men after Teddie are deadly, but the man who holds her life in his hands and tempts her with his wicked touch is even more dangerous. He could make her dream about living and loving again. And if they can survive, maybe, just maybe, they can stop fighting the world and each other—and simply surrender.

Book excerpt: Dr. Brandon Cowley finds himself immersed in a conspiracy to defraud the federal government billions of dollars in a research protocol designed to put the majority of vascular surgeons out of business. The Heart Assisted Device is designed to obviate the need for more expensive and traditional cardiac bypass surgery, but positive research results must support the government’s claim that the device is superior to the more expensive CABG surgeries. Brandon uncovers a plot to murder his patients to report favorable results and thus make the FDA’s case for the new procedure. A parallel plot involves Mexico’s intent to steal American biotechnology. This page-turner throws the reader into the worlds of medical research, governmental bureaucracy and conspiracy, and the sordid underground realm of organized crime.
