Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traffics and Discoveries, Vol. 2 of 2 I did so, not knowing what djinns I should evoke; and the result was such an apology as one might make who had spent a night on the rack. I conceived great respect for Apothecaries' Hall, and esteem for Mr. Cashell, a zealous craftsman who magnified his calling. Until Mr. Shaynor came down from the North his assistants had by no means agreed with Mr. Cashell. 'they forget, ' said he, 'that, first and foremost, the compounder is a medicinaman. On him depends the physician's reputation. He holds it literally in the hollow of his hand, Sir.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traffics and Discoveries, Vol. 1 of 2 Here and there earnest groups gathered round ministers of the Dutch Reformed Church, who doubtless preached conciliation, but the majority preferred their bath. The God who Looks after Small Things had caused the visitor that day to receive two weeks' delayed mails in one from a casual postman, and the whole heavy bundle of newspapers, tied with a strap, he dangled as bait. At the edge of the beach, crossflegged, undressed to his skyablue army shirt, sat a lean, gingero haired man, on guard over a dozen heaps of clothing. His eyes followed the incoming Atlantic boat. Book excerpt: Traffics And Discoveries This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book Traffic the Story of a Faithful Woman Classic Reprint

Download or read book Traffic the Story of a Faithful Woman Classic Reprint written by E. Temple Thurston and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traffic, the Story of a Faithful Woman The sun which had been white with heat all day, was growing deeper and deeper in a tone of orange; and as though some unseen hand were plunging it again into the bowels of a furnace, it sank slowly behind the horizon. Long strands of purplish clouds, rimmed with palest gold, stretched across a sky of primrose, and in the east, great banks of cumulus clouds were lit with cream and pink, like snow-capped mountains lifting their rounded peaks into the unknown. A haze of gold hung about the land in a mist; every tree or bush that rose up before the sun was black. Evening lurked in every shadow, and the last breath of the day was almost drawn. In the middle of autumn it was late to be driving home the cattle; yet across the fields, their tails swishing lethargically to keep off the stray flies that had followed them, their udders swinging heavily from side to side, like cumbrous bells swaying to an impotent hand, seven cows walked peacefully before a tall girl, whose rounded figure was silhouetted with impressionistic effect against the skyline. The gait of the animals, their ambling, even motion, brought one a sense of contentment. One felt that they needed the relief of the hands that were to milk them. One inevitably realized that the day was over. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Rudyard Kipling

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jan Montefiore
  • Publisher : Northcote House Pub Limited
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 0746308272
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Rudyard Kipling written by Jan Montefiore and published by Northcote House Pub Limited. This book was released on 2007 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rudyard Kipling was a Victorian and an early modernist, a disciplinarian imperialist who sympathized with children and outlaws, a globe-trotter who mythologized 'Old England', and a world-famous author whom intellectuals despised. The central theme of this book is the way his work and its reception are both fissured and energized by these contradictions. This thorough study initially discusses Kipling's ambivalent knowing attitude to unknowable otherness, his rhetorical imitations of Indian and demotic vernaculars, his work ethic and ideal of imperialist masculinity, thus contextualizing the central discussion of his masterpiece Kim which, almost uniquely, takes Indian otherness as a source of pleasure, not anxiety. Jan Montefiore describes Kipling as a writer on the cusp of modernity, examining how his fiction and poetry engaged with radio, cinema and air travel, how his poetry anticipated and influenced the subversive uncertainties of modernism, and how his post-war contributions to the literature of mourning undermined their own overt traditionalism.

Book Stories of Exploration and Discovery Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Exploration and Discovery Classic Reprint written by Arthur Bennett Archer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Exploration and Discovery His little book is the outcome of several years' experience in the teaching of an original course on the History of Discovery. The course has been given to middle forms, and spread over two years' work, with a fortnightly lesson. This has been supplementary to the usual work in History and Geography, and the study of both those subjects has been found to benefit considerably. An aspect of human endeavour and progress that is often only lightly touched upon has received more adequate and connected treatment, with corresponding gain in interest. The course has afforded opportunities for the revision of World History and Geography, from a fresh point of view, but the chief value has been found to lie in the stimulus to wider reading on the part of the pupils. The'short list of books appended to this volume illustrates the scope of such reading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Secret of Progress Classic Reprint written by W. Cunningham and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-10-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
