The fruits of efforts made today may not be visible for several years. But equally, failure to invest now will cost future generations dearly. The European Union is aware of the stakes involved as it strives to become the worldœs most dynamic knowledge-based economy by 2010. The competition is tough: at present, the United States and Japan each spend more on R&D than the EU and its member states. To meet this challenge, the EU has a strategy. It aims to get the best out of national research efforts and to combine resources where research efforts would otherwise be too small and fragmented. It is creating a frontier-free European research area, enabling scientists across the EU to join forces in pursuit of excellence.

In Just Beyond Tomorrow, Jasmine's strong-willed son, Patrick Leslie, continues Skye's Legacy when he takes a wife who wants no husband. . . Just Beyond Tomorrow With his father dead and his mother in France, Patrick Leslie, Duke of Glenkirk, discovers the obligations of the estate and its people are now his alone. But during a day of hunting, a chance meeting ensures that he will not be alone much longer, for to obtain the deserted castle and lands adjoining his, Patrick must agree to take something else, as well--a bride. Flanna Brodie, heiress to Brae, is as vibrant and beautiful as the Scottish countryside, and just as wild. She wants no man--only her freedom. But the passions Patrick awakens in her run deeper than those of the flesh. The independent Flanna is determined to champion the royal Stuarts' cause, and restore Charles II to his throne despite her husband's objections. Patrick knows the dangers of such political intrigues; that the Stuarts have always brought misfortune to the Leslies of Glenkirk, and that a roguish king will ask far more of the naïve duchess than a simple vow of fealty--forcing Patrick and Flanna to choose between the threat of wounded pride, and the promise of a lasting love both secretly yearn for. . .

Book What Do You Believe Regarding Eternity

Download or read book What Do You Believe Regarding Eternity written by Patricia Annette Hoskins and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To believe in something is to hope in it as well. But what if the things that we hope for or believe in are worthless? What if everything regarding our hopes and beliefs are in this world only, and not in faith in God. No belief system that man has in place of the Gospel can guarantee anyone redemption or resurrection. Worldly and carnal belief systems are therefore in vain; they do not or cannot promise eternal life. Christians look forward to a life with God in heaven, which comes after this life; unbelievable to some, but true. We are not hopeless, but hopeful. In Ephesians 1, Paul tells us that we have been accepted in the beloved. This epistle affirms our life in Christ after we are no longer in these mortal bodies. God's promise and warning to us in John 3:36 is that "he who believes in the Son hath eternal life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

Book Beyond Traffic Safety

Download or read book Beyond Traffic Safety written by John Peter Rothe and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Rothe's absorbing volume ex-amines one of the most important areas of modern life, the culture of the automobile. Rothe takes a problem central to everyday life--auto safety-- and reconstructs it into a means of revealing the human condition. His goal is to motivate the reader to think differently about traffic safety, and to suspend all inherited epidemiological, engineering, and psychological beliefs. Because traffic arises from the interac-tion between people, he argues that traffic safety is a social process, one that is created, formed, and changed by human interaction. Beyond Traffic Safety presents con-troversial critiques and provocative positions. It stimulates insight into the question of why traffic safety issues have become so important today. Rothe explores new social boundaries and crosses old ones. He demonstrates that interlinking social factors in a motorist's behavior reveal traffic safety as a significant facet of social behavior worthy of in-depth exploration. This may well be the first work of fundamen-tal theory in an area thus far dominated by crude empiricism. Beyond Traffic Safety describes responsibilities of drivers and ex-amines how basic trust in traffic routines sustains an orderly traffic flow. It shows how physical risks are negotiated to accommodate social ex-pectations. Part of the text is devoted to the role played by the driver's license as a form of social control, emphasiz-ing the way in which various images of licensing convey different ideas about traffic safety. Rothe focuses on the development of traffic laws and how laws affect driver behavior. He also traces the roles that discretion and tolerance play in police work. In par-ticular, the dominant traffic violation, speeding, is analyzed. Rothe looks at traffic safety in a new way by presenting it as part of a social scientific framework. He provides a basis for future exploration of this kind. Beyond Traffic Safety is an im-portant and insightful analysis for road users, traffic safety educators, policymakers, psychologists, and sociologists.
