Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traditions of Edinburgh I AM about to do what very few could do without emotion revise a book which I wrote forty-nve years ago. This little xwork came out in the Augustan days of Edinburgh, when (i Jeffrey and Scott, Wilson and the Ettrick Shepherd, Dugald Stewart and Alison, were daily giving the productions of their minds to the public, and while yet Archibald Constable acted as the unquestioned emperor of the publishing world. I was then an insignificant person of the age of twenty; yet, destitute as I was both of means and friends, I formed the hope of writing something which would attract attention. The subject I proposed was one lying readily at hand, the romantic things connected with Old Edinburgh. If, I calculated, a first part or number could be issued, materials for others might be expected to come in, for scores of old inhabitants, even up perhaps to the very oldest, ' would then contribute their reminiscences. The plan met with success. Materials almost unbounded came to me, chiefly from aged professional and mercantile gentlemen, who, usually, at my first introduction to them, started at my youthful appearance, having formed the notion that none but an old person would have thought of writing such a book. A friend gave me a letter to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe, who, I was told, knew the scandal of the time of Charles II. As well as he did the merest gossip of the day, and had much to say regarding the good society of a hundred years ago. Book Edinburgh Records Vol 2

Download or read book Edinburgh Records Vol 2 written by Robert Adam and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Records, Vol. 2: The Burgh Accounts Id Edinburgh, as in some Continental cities, there was a long struggle between the merchants and the craftsmen or members of the incorporated trades, who were practically excluded from the administration of the Town's affairs. At length, under a Decreet Arbitral of King James VI. in 1583, the craftsmen were admitted to substantial representation in the Town Council. The Merchant Guild of Edinburgh must not be identified with the Merchant Company of Edinburgh, established in 1681, and which is so well known at the present day, although each member of the latter requires to be a Burgess and Guild Brother of the City. The payments in the Accounts relate mainly to the Kirk of Saint Giles, the secular affairs of which were under the special care of the Dean of Guild. Saint Giles (Saint Egidius) - or, as he was popularly called, "Sanct Geill " - was the patron saint of the City; and the Church named after him was the first parochial one in Edinburgh. The Saint, who had been an Abbot in France, died on 1st September 721, and the anniversary of that date was held as his Festival. According to tradition, he at one period of his life owed his preservation to a bind, the figure of which appears on the City Arms to this day. The religious life of the Town's people was bound up with the City Church. The Merchants' Guild, as already mentioned, had an aisle and altar; and each of the incorporated crafts or trades bad its patron saint with an altar in the Church, and contributed to the up-keep of the services.
