Download or read book Celtic Airs written by Bill Woods and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2022-03-09 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These 102 lilting slow airs with suggested chord changes are suitable for violin, flute, penny whistle, recorder, concertina, accordion, keyboard, harp, hammered dulcimer, etc., accompanied by any chord-capable instrument. Ancient to 19th-century in origin, most of these melodies will seem refreshingly new to modern-day musicians, audiences and even connoisseurs of the Celtic style. The author encourages readers to add their own ornaments once they have learned the basic tunes. Most of the tune titles appear in their original Scots Gaelic or Irish with helpful English translations; the original titles, however, lend this collection an air of authenticity. These melodies are worthy of performance and recording by modern musicians, and one Christmas tune in particular, “Taladh Chriosta” (Christ Child’s Lullaby”), ranks right up there with “What Child Is This/Greensleeves” in its originality and sheer beauty. This collection includes access to online audio of all 102 melodies.

Book Trad Nation

  • Author : Tes Slominski
  • Publisher : Wesleyan University Press
  • Release : 2020-03-17
  • ISBN : 0819579297

Download or read book Trad Nation written by Tes Slominski and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just how "Irish" is traditional Irish music? Trad Nation combines ethnography, oral history, and archival research to challenge the longstanding practice of using ethnic nationalism as a framework for understanding vernacular music traditions. Tes Slominski argues that ethnic nationalism hinders this music's development today in an increasingly multiethnic Ireland and in the transnational Irish traditional music scene. She discusses early 21st century women whose musical lives were shaped by Ireland's struggles to become a nation; follows the career of Julia Clifford, a fiddler who lived much of her life in England, and explores the experiences of women, LGBTQ+ musicians, and musicians of color in the early 21st century.

Book Old Irish Folk Music and Songs

Download or read book Old Irish Folk Music and Songs written by P. W. Joyce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Irish Folk Music and Songs: A Collection of 842 Irish Airs and Songs, Hitherto Unpublished If the names have survived in the two branches, why not the airs? And I thought it just possible - indeed I half hoped - that in Danish collections of popular music I might light on versions of our Molly Astore, Garryowen, The Boyne Water, Patrick's Day, The Groves of Blarney, &c. In order' to hunt this matter up, I procured from a well-known publisher in Copenhagen three fine collections of Scandinavian popular traditional music, mostly with words - Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian containing 294 Danish melodies (including twelve of the Faroe Islands), 223 Swedish, and 161 Norwegian. All are accompanied with elaborate notes; but it was tantalizing that I could not read one word of them; for they are all - as well as the songs - in Danish. The music I could read, however and I went over the three collections, air by air. In general character and structure the Danish airs approach nearer to Irish than do the Swedish and Norwegian; but I may say at once that on the whole the result of my search was disappointing. I could find no considerable number of Danish airs either identical with, or closely resembling, those of Ireland. Yet I found a few. Download or read book Irish Fiddle Solos written by Peter Cooper and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2010-12-29 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection includes many favourite Irish fiddle tunes. Some are easy to play, others more challenging. the bowing techniques, ornamentation and other aspects of playing style summarized in the introduction will be familiar to readers of Pete's earlier book, the Complete Irish Fiddle Player, as will source musicians like Julia Clifford, Tommy Peoples, Lucy Farr, John Doherty and Padraig O'Keeffe. Here though, instead of proceeding in 'fiddle method' style from simpler to more complex tunes, regional repertoire and styles are explored. Grouped in sets for performance, the tunes from any one tradition can be of varying levels of difficulty. Less experienced players may find sets 5, 6 and 29, for example, quite approachable, as well as the first reel in set 14 and the second single jig in set 15. All tunes included on companion CD.
