Filling a gap in the sound recordings of traditional Anglo-American folk music this volume covers both vocal and instrumental material from the 1920s to the 1990s. The listings have also been limited to performers native to the tradition rather than "revival" performers. The album selection is grouped into field recordings and commercial (pre-1942) recordings, with subdivisions into individual recordings or anthologies. The discography not only reflects its author’s in-depth knowledge of Anglo-American folk music’s historical development but charts a valuable step forward in the evaluation, as well as select lissting, of available sound recordings.

Book excerpt: This memoir by the internationally renowned jazz pianist Art Hodes, born in Russia in 1904, is in its own way a blues, a lament for and a celebration of music and musicians we have lost. The last of the living legends among Chicago jazz musicians, Hodes joins with jazz historian Chadwick Hansen to provide a unique perspective on more than seven decades of jazz history. With an honesty not usually found in jazz books, Hot Man captures Hodes's professional career from his apprenticeship in Chicago in the 1920s to the present. The book offers remarkable inside views of gangster clubowners, the great New York jazz clubs and the vicious "jazz wars" of the 1940s, Chicago from the 1950s, the very closed and special world of jazz musicians, the curious relationships between musicians and their audiences, and Hodes's experiences with jazz greats including Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke. No other white musician has given us such a full account of learning to play from black musicians. This intimate journey takes us to a vast circle of fellow musicians, to recording companies and the business of the profession, to Nodes's other career as a writer and editor of the Jazz Record, a publication that existed through most of the 1940s. Hodes's story includes almost thirty photographs and a comprehensive discography, filling a gap in the world of jazz literature.

Book Traditional Music and Irish Society Historical Perspectives

Download or read book Traditional Music and Irish Society Historical Perspectives written by Dr Martin Dowling and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written from the perspective of a scholar and performer, Traditional Music and Irish Society investigates the relation of traditional music to Irish modernity. The opening chapter integrates a thorough survey of the early sources of Irish music with recent work on Irish social history in the eighteenth century to explore the question of the antiquity of the tradition and the class locations of its origins. Dowling argues in the second chapter that the formation of what is today called Irish traditional music occurred alongside the economic and political modernization of European society in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Dowling goes on to illustrate the public discourse on music during the Irish revival in newspapers and journals from the 1880s to the First World War, also drawing on the works of Pierre Bourdieu and Jacques Lacan to place the field of music within the public sphere of nationalist politics and cultural revival in these decades. The situation of music and song in the Irish literary revival is then reflected and interpreted in the life and work of James Joyce, and Dowling includes treatment of Joyce’s short stories A Mother and The Dead and the 'Sirens' chapter of Ulysses. Dowling conducted field work with Northern Irish musicians during 2004 and 2005, and also reflects directly on his own experience performing and working with musicians and arts organizations in order to conclude with an assessment of the current state of traditional music and cultural negotiation in Northern Ireland in the second decade of the twenty-first century.

Download or read book More Important Than the Music written by Bruce D. Epperson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, jazz is considered high art, America’s national music, and the catalog of its recordings—its discography—is often taken for granted. But behind jazz discography is a fraught and highly colorful history of research, fanaticism, and the intense desire to know who played what, where, and when. This history gets its first full-length treatment in Bruce D. Epperson’s More Important Than the Music. Following the dedicated few who sought to keep jazz’s legacy organized, Epperson tells a fascinating story of archival pursuit in the face of negligence and deception, a tale that saw curses and threats regularly employed, with fisticuffs and lawsuits only slightly rarer. Epperson examines the documentation of recorded jazz from its casual origins as a novelty in the 1920s and ’30s, through the overwhelming deluge of 12-inch vinyl records in the middle of the twentieth century, to the use of computers by today’s discographers. Though he focuses much of his attention on comprehensive discographies, he also examines the development of a variety of related listings, such as buyer’s guides and library catalogs, and he closes with a look toward discography’s future. From the little black book to the full-featured online database, More Important Than the Music offers a history not just of jazz discography but of the profoundly human desire to preserve history itself.

Book Irish Folk Music

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Greenwood
  • Release : 1989-05-03
  • ISBN : 0313253129
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Irish Folk Music written by and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1989-05-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish folk music has, since time immemorial, been a means of Irish self-expression and nationalism, with tunes and songs passed down through the generations preserving Ireland's lively oral tradition. With the advent of the phonograph, radio, and TV, Irish music reached a more varied, worldwide audience. This international enthusiasm produced, over the last three decades, an Irish folk music revival--a renaissance that came into full bloom in the 1970s and continues vigorously today. The ballad bands of the 1950s and 1960s, the more traditional music of pioneer Sean O'Riada, the purist approach of the internationally renowned Chieftains as well as late 1960s subtle ballad groups like Sweeney's Men form the rich tapestry of music and musicians that preceeded the evolution of such 1970s groups as Planxty and Skara Brae. They, in turn, spawned bands that accompanied traditional Gaelic songs with acoustic guitars and clavichord, among other instruments, and showed the influences of rock, jazz, classical, and pop music. Recent trends include Celtic fusion, an energized new age music, and excursions into rock'n'roll and pop. If anything, the current Irish music scene--composers and performers--is internationally visible, highly marketable, alive, and growing. Musicians, scholars, and cognoscenti of Irish music will be pleased to find references to Donal Lunny, Dolores Keane, and Mick Moloney in this valuable reference that covers the 1960s to the Spring of 1987. The first work to exclusively address and evaluate Irish folk music recordings, this selective annotated discography lists some 200 recordings and has citations to an additional 100 or more. Each entry is fully indexed by musician(s), producer, and contents of the recording, and entries also include main artists, year of release, record label, number, and more. The appendixes consist of a glossary of Irish words, musical terms, and a current directory of sources for obtaining the recordings. Informative annotations follow the basic discographic information and most entries have been critiqued by the author. This unique reference focuses mainly on recordings from the 1970s onward and, with few exceptions, all entries are in print and are released by United States and Irish record labels.

Book Sellout

Download or read book Sellout written by Dan Ozzi and published by Mariner Books. This book was released on 2021 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From celebrated music writer Dan Ozzi comes a comprehensive chronicle of the punk music scene's evolution from the early nineties to the mid-aughts, following eleven bands as they dissolved, "sold out," and rose to surprise stardom. From its inception, punk music has been identified by two factors: its proximity to "authenticity," and its reliance on an antiestablishment ethos. Yet, in the mid- to late '90s, major record labels sought to capitalize on punk's rebellious undertones, leading to a schism in the scene: to accept the cash flow of the majors, or stick to indie cred?Sellout chronicles the evolution of the punk scene during this era, focusing on prominent bands as they experienced the last "gold rush" of the music industry. Within it, music writer Dan Ozzi follows the rise of successful bands like Green Day and Jimmy Eat World, as well as the implosion of groups like Jawbreaker and At the Drive-In, who buckled under the pressure of their striving labels. Featuring original interviews and personal stories from members of eleven of modern punk's most (in)famous bands, Sellout is the history of the evolution of the music industry, and a punk rock lover's guide to the chaotic darlings of the post-grunge era.
